When does Summer EBT (Sun Bucks) program distribute new cards? My school opted out!
I've been waiting for my son's Summer EBT card (those 'Sun Bucks' they're calling them now) but nothing's arrived yet. Are they being sent out in batches by last name? We're Letter G and haven't seen anything. UPDATE: Just found out my son's school completely opted out of the Summer EBT program! Why would they do that?? Now I need to figure out if we qualify through Medi-Cal instead. The problem is I make too much for CalFresh benefits, so I'm worried we won't qualify this way either. Does anyone know the income limits for Sun Bucks through the Medi-Cal pathway? What bracket do you have to fall under to qualify if your school opted out?

•Thanks, I'll definitely keep an eye out for plain envelopes! Did your kids' school participate or did you qualify another way?

The Summer EBT/Sun Bucks income guidelines are the same as free/reduced school meals - about 185% of federal poverty level for 2025. For a family of 3, that's around $50,220 annual income. If your school opted out (which is frustrating but happening in some districts), you can still qualify through Medi-Cal if your child has coverage. Check your eligibility on the California Summer EBT portal - there should be an option to apply even if your school isn't participating.

•Thank you! I think we might be right at that threshold, my salary is about $51,000 for our family of 3. My son does have Medi-Cal coverage though, so that's promising. I'll check the portal.

Some schools are opting out because they think it's too much paperwork or they don't want to deal with the administrative burden. SO ANNOYING because kids are missing out on important food benefits! If your son has Medi-Cal you should automatically qualify - they should be able to match his info in the system. The cards are being sent in waves through June and July based on last name AND county. What county are you in?

•We're in San Bernardino County. That makes sense about the administrative burden, but it's still so frustrating! Good to know about the Medi-Cal auto-qualification, though I'm not sure if that's happening since I haven't received anything yet.

I work with families navigating benefit programs, and the Summer EBT rollout has been confusing for many. For your situation, if your child has Medi-Cal, you should qualify regardless of your income (since they already qualified for Medi-Cal). The distribution schedule varies by county - some counties are sending them alphabetically, others by zip code. If you haven't received anything by mid-June, I'd recommend calling the Summer EBT hotline, but be prepared for long wait times. I've had clients use Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through faster - they have a service that holds your place in line and calls you back when a representative is available. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 And yes, schools opting out has been a significant issue this year. They were given the choice, and some decided the implementation was too complex.

•Thank you for this detailed info! I'll give it until mid-June and then try calling. That Claimyr service sounds helpful - I hate being stuck on hold for hours. Do you know if there's any appeal process to get my school to change their mind about participating?

•Unfortunately, for this year, schools have already made their decisions about participation. You could speak with your school board or administration about reconsidering for next year, but for now, pursuing the Medi-Cal pathway is your best option. The good news is that Summer EBT is supposed to be a permanent program going forward, so there will be opportunities to advocate for your school's participation in future years.

•Actually CalFresh is 200% of federal poverty level now in 2025, so it's higher than the Summer EBT program. But you're right that Medi-Cal is the easiest pathway if the school isn't participating.

I just went through this whole process because our school opted out too. So frustrating! If your child has Medi-Cal, you should get it automatically, but there have been system matching issues. I had to call FOUR TIMES before getting through to a person who could help me. The cards are definitely going out in batches, but they're behind schedule. The income limits depend on household size - for a family of 4 it's about $59,000 annual income. If you're close to the threshold, apply anyway! Sometimes they don't count certain income or there are deductions that help you qualify. Also, check if your child gets any other benefits that might qualify them automatically. Even certain reduced fee programs through the county can sometimes help establish eligibility.

•Four calls? That's discouraging. Did you have to provide additional documentation to prove eligibility through Medi-Cal? And thanks for the tip about other county programs - my son is in a reduced fee after-school program, so maybe that will help.

•Not yet, I'm going to try calling tomorrow. Did they tell you why your card was delayed when you finally reached someone?
