Suspicious call claiming to be CalFresh from 1-844-741-0373 - Is this legit or a scam?

I got this weird call today from 1-844-741-0373. The automated voice said something like "This is Cal..." (couldn't catch if it was CalFresh or CalWORKs) and then used my full legal name asking me to press 1 to confirm it was me. Then it just said to contact the county during business hours if I needed more info. I didn't press anything and hung up because it seemed fishy. Has anyone else received calls like this? Is this actually from the county or is this some kind of identity theft scam? I'm paranoid because I just submitted my SAR7 last week and I'm wondering if there's an issue with my benefits.

That number (1-844-741-0373) is actually a legitimate CalFresh automated system number. The county offices use it for automated notifications about case updates, verification deadlines, and benefit status changes. Since you recently submitted your SAR7, it's probably related to that - either confirming receipt or telling you something is missing. You should call your county office during business hours to find out what they needed.

Oh thank goodness! I was freaking out thinking someone was trying to steal my identity or something. I'll call my caseworker tomorrow. Do you think my benefits might be at risk since I didn't press 1? I really can't afford to lose my CalFresh right now.

BE CAREFUL!!!! I got a similar call last year that turned out to be SCAMMERS trying to get my personal info!!! They knew my name and everything about my calfresh but then asked for my social and EBT card number!!! NEVER give ANY personal info over the phone!!!!

The phone number 1-844-741-0373 is a legitimate automated notification system used by CDSS (California Department of Social Services) for CalFresh, CalWORKs, and other benefit programs. It's their statewide notification line. However, it's always good practice to be cautious. If you're concerned: 1. Don't provide personal information on the call 2. Call your county office directly using the number on your CalFresh documents (not a number provided in the call) 3. Check your BenefitsCal account for any notices or alerts Since you mentioned submitting your SAR7 recently, they're likely trying to notify you about something related to that - perhaps missing verification or additional information needed.

Thanks for confirming! I checked my BenefitsCal account and there's actually a notice dated yesterday saying they need my last pay stub for verification. That must be what the call was about. I'll upload it today.

I get those calls all the time and just ignore them lol. Half the time when I try calling back the county, I sit on hold forever and then get disconnected anyway. The whole system is a joke.

You might want to try using Claimyr to reach your county worker. It holds your place in line and calls you back when a worker is available so you don't waste hours on hold. I was getting disconnected constantly too until I found them. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Saved me so much frustration when I had verification issues with my SAR7 last month.

my cousin got a similar call and it was about her needing to submit some income verification for her recertification. apparently if you don't press 1 they're supposed to mail you the info instead, at least that's what happened with her. but ya never hurts to call county to double check what they need

That's good to know! I'll still call tomorrow but it's reassuring to hear they should mail the info too. Seems like this is about my missing pay stub based on the notice in my BenefitsCal account.

i got the same call last month!! it was because i had a medi-cal renewal due not calfresh tho. the counties use the same system for both. its annoying how they dont clearly say which program theyre calling about!

That's a great point. The automated system handles notifications for CalFresh, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal, and sometimes even General Assistance programs. They should really specify which program they're calling about right at the start instead of that vague "This is Cal..." announcement.

Just to follow up on this thread - for future reference, here's how to verify if a call is actually from the county: 1. Legitimate county calls about CalFresh typically come from: - The automated system (1-844-741-0373) - Your specific county office (check your paperwork for their number) 2. County workers will NEVER ask for: - Your full Social Security Number over the phone - Your EBT card number and PIN - Banking information 3. If you're unsure, hang up and call back using the official number from your notices or the BenefitsCal website Glad you figured out this was legitimate, OP! Make sure to submit that verification document ASAP to avoid any benefit delays.

Thank you! I submitted the pay stub through BenefitsCal yesterday and called my worker this morning. They confirmed everything is processed and my benefits will continue normally. This thread has been super helpful!

This is such a helpful thread! I've been getting those automated calls too and never knew if they were legit. It's really frustrating how vague that "This is Cal..." message is - they should definitely be clearer about which program they're calling about. I'm bookmarking this for future reference since it sounds like these calls are pretty common. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

Totally agree! I just joined this community and I'm so glad I found this thread. I've been on CalFresh for about 6 months now and I had no idea about that automated number - I probably would have panicked and thought it was a scam too if I got that call. It's really helpful to see everyone sharing their experiences and tips. The suggestion about using Claimyr to avoid those endless hold times sounds like a lifesaver too!
