P-EBT 4.0 payment amount for 2-year-old seems low - only $302?
I just received our P-EBT 4.0 replacement card yesterday. My son is 2 years old, and we only got $302 loaded on the card. That seems really low compared to what I've been hearing others received. My neighbor's 4-year-old got nearly $650! Is there an age-based calculation for P-EBT 4.0 amounts? Or did they make a mistake with my son's benefits? I already checked BenefitsCal and it shows the same amount. Has anyone else with toddlers received similar amounts or should I call the county to ask about this?

The P-EBT 4.0 benefit amounts depend on a few factors, including whether your child was enrolled in a qualifying childcare program during the eligibility period (2022-2023). Children in full-time childcare receive different amounts than those in part-time programs. Additionally, benefits can vary based on how many school closure days affected your child's program. The $302 amount is actually a standard tier for some situations - it's not necessarily wrong just because it's lower than others received.

•Oh, that makes sense! My son only started daycare part-time in January 2023, so maybe that's why his amount is lower. Do you know if they consider the entire 2022-2023 period even if he wasn't in childcare the whole time?

My 3 yr old only got 325$ so yours seems right!!! The smaller kids get less i think

•Thanks for sharing! That makes me feel better that we're not the only ones. Guess the toddlers just get smaller amounts.

P-EBT amounts are incredibly confusing and frustrating! I received different amounts for each of my three kids and spent WEEKS trying to figure out why. The state basically calculates benefits based on age, program enrollment type, and attendance records that schools/daycares submitted. The $302 is likely correct if your child was in part-time care or only enrolled for part of the eligibility period. I tried calling the P-EBT hotline and waited 2+ hours only to be told they couldn't explain the exact calculation. So frustrating!

•That sounds awful! I don't have time to spend hours on the phone just to probably get no real answer. I'm starting to think I should just accept the amount and be grateful for what we got.

Just to add some clarity here - P-EBT 4.0 benefits are NOT the same as regular CalFresh. They're a one-time pandemic benefit that varies based on your child's specific situation during the 2022-2023 program year. The standard benefit tiers for P-EBT 4.0 are: - $132 for minimal eligibility - $302 for partial program participation - $455 for standard participation - $603 for extended participation - $802 for full program participation So your $302 is actually one of the standard payment tiers. This sounds right if your child was in part-time care or only enrolled for part of the eligibility period.

•Thank you so much for breaking down the tiers! This is super helpful. Now I can see that $302 is definitely one of the standard amounts and not some random number. My son was only in care 2 days a week starting in January 2023, so the partial program participation makes perfect sense.

•I had a similar experience and then I discovered Claimyr. It basically calls the P-EBT/CalFresh line for you and then calls you back when a real person answers. Saved me from wasting hours on hold! Check out their video demo at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 or go to claimyr.com. They connected me with a worker in about 30 minutes while I was doing other things. Much better than the 3+ hours I spent trying on my own.

•Thank you both for the advice! I might try Claimyr if I decide I really need to call, but based on the helpful explanations here, I think my amount is probably correct.

The formula they use for P-EBT 4.0 is sooooooo confusing. Each payment tier represents different levels of participation, and they used data from schools and childcare providers to determine eligibility. My daughter's preschool messed up their reporting initially, so a bunch of kids got lower amounts. They had to submit corrections and then some kids got supplemental payments months later. Might be worth checking with your childcare provider to make sure they submitted accurate information about your child's attendance during the eligibility period. If there was an error, you could potentially qualify for more.

•That's a great suggestion! I'll check with our daycare director to see what information they submitted. I didn't even think about that possibility.

Just an update since I see others mentioning the P-EBT hotline issues - the state actually added more staff recently because of all the complaints about wait times. I called last week and only waited about 45 minutes, which is still ridiculous but better than before. They told me they're processing correction requests through June 2025, so if there is an issue with your amount, you have time to address it.

•That's good to know, thank you! If I find out from the daycare that there might have been a reporting error, I'll try calling. At least there's no immediate deadline to worry about.

•Yes! Thankfully our regular CalFresh benefits are still coming as usual on our EBT card. This P-EBT was just something extra I wasn't expecting, so I probably shouldn't complain about the amount! 😅
