Do CalFresh recipients get benefit increase for each child or just one per household?
So confused about how CalFresh calculates benefits for kids. Just had my second baby last month (now have a 3yr old and newborn). Currently getting $534/month for me and my first kid. Do I get an increase for the new baby too? Or is it just a one-time increase when you first have a kid? My friend said her benefits didn't change much when she had her 2nd. County office has me on hold forever when I try calling. Need to know if I should expect more EBT $ next month or budget the same amount.

You should definitely report your new household member! CalFresh benefits are based on household size and income, so each additional person (including babies) can increase your benefit amount. The calculation looks at total household income against the number of people. More people = higher maximum benefit amount. You need to report this change to your county office within 10 days. You can do this through BenefitsCal online, but honestly calling is better for something like adding a household member.

•Thank you!! I'll keep trying to call. Do you know roughly how much more I might get? Just trying to plan my budget for next month.

•Thanks! That helps to have a rough idea. I work part-time so hopefully it'll be similar for me.

The system is so broken. When I added my niece to my household last year, I called 14 TIMES before getting through. And then they asked for so much verification - birth certificate, proof she lives with me, school records, EVERYTHING. Took almost 2 months to actually see the increase in benefits. Good luck!

•I had the same experience! When I was trying to get through to add my newborn, I kept getting disconnected after waiting for like 45 minutes. Finally I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in line and calls you back when a worker is available. Saved me hours of hold time! They have a demo video too: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Only way I could actually talk to someone without taking a day off work.

•Ugh that sounds awful! I hope it doesn't take that long for me. I need the extra benefits now with formula being so expensive.

Each child counts as a separate household member for the CalFresh benefit calculation. For 2025, a household of 3 with your income level would likely receive between $650-725 in monthly benefits, depending on your exact income, housing costs, and any child care expenses you might have. Make sure when you report the change that you include: - Baby's birth certificate - Your current income verification - Any childcare expenses for either child - Medical expenses for the newborn if applicable You can also ask them to expedite the change since it involves a newborn. Benefits should be prorated from the date you report the change, not when they process it.

•Thank you so much for the specific info! I didn't know I could ask them to expedite or that I should mention childcare. My 3yr old is in daycare 3 days a week while I work, so I'll definitely mention that.

my sister just had twins and they only gave her like $100 more total not $100 each baby which seems wrong to me

•The benefit increase isn't exactly proportional per person. CalFresh uses a formula that assumes some economies of scale (shared housing costs, etc). So going from 2 to 3 people might increase benefits by $150-200, but going from 3 to 5 people (twins) wouldn't double that amount. Each additional person typically adds a decreasing amount to the total benefit.

•oh that makes sense i guess but still seems unfair when u need to buy double formula and stuff

Don't forget to also apply for WIC if you haven't already! CalFresh is great but WIC specifically helps with formula and baby food costs, and you can receive both benefits simultaneously. My CalFresh increased about $120/month when I added my second child last year, but having WIC too was a huge help for the formula costs specifically.

•I do have WIC! You're right, it's been super helpful with the formula. Just hoping the extra CalFresh will help cover all the other new expenses.

•Adding a household member is considered a change that must be reported within 10 days, even outside of the SAR7 reporting period. This is especially important for a newborn since it will almost certainly increase benefits. Waiting until the next SAR7 could mean missing out on months of increased benefits.

Congratulations on your new baby! Yes, you should definitely get an increase for your second child. CalFresh benefits are calculated based on household size, so each additional person (including babies) increases your maximum benefit amount. The increase won't be as much as when you first added your 3-year-old because of how the benefit formula works, but you should still see a decent bump - probably around $120-180 more per month based on what others have shared. Make sure to report the change within 10 days of the birth and have your baby's birth certificate ready. You can try calling during off-peak hours (like mid-morning on weekdays) to avoid the longest wait times. Don't give up - that extra money will really help with all the new baby expenses!

•Thanks for the congrats and the helpful info! The $120-180 range sounds about right based on what others have said. I'll definitely try calling mid-morning - hadn't thought about timing it that way. Really appreciate everyone's advice on this thread, it's been so much more helpful than trying to navigate the county office phone system!

Congratulations on your new baby! You should definitely see an increase in your CalFresh benefits. Each person in your household counts toward the benefit calculation, so adding your newborn will bump up your monthly amount. Based on what others have shared here, you're probably looking at an extra $120-180 per month. I'd recommend calling first thing in the morning (like 8:30am) or right after lunch around 1pm - those tend to be less busy times. Have your baby's birth certificate ready and mention any childcare costs for your 3-year-old since that can also affect your benefit amount. The increase should be backdated to when you report the change, not when they finally process it, so don't delay! Good luck getting through to them.

•Thanks for the timing tips! I never thought about calling right after lunch - that's really smart. I'll try that today since mornings are crazy with the baby and toddler. Really hoping I can get through soon because formula prices are no joke! Everyone here has been so helpful with the realistic expectations about the increase amount.
