When will the new 2025 CalFresh allotment increase show up on my EBT card?

Just had my annual recertification call with my county worker yesterday and was told the standard CalFresh benefit for a household of 2 is increasing from $439 to around $490 starting next month. Thing is, I just checked my EBT balance and only got $439 deposited today. Not complaining about the small difference, but wondering when that extra amount is supposed to kick in? Is it actually starting next month (March 2025) instead of February? Also, has anyone heard updates about the P-EBT 3.0 program for kids under 6? My nephew just moved in with me and my county worker mentioned something about it but didn't have details. Any info would be helpful!

The annual benefit adjustment for 2025 doesn't take effect until March 1st. Your February benefits would still be at the 2024 rate ($439), and you'll see the increase to $490 when your March benefits are deposited. The increase is based on the annual cost of living adjustment (COLA) that happens every spring. Regarding P-EBT 3.0 for children under 6, that program has actually been replaced with the new Supplemental Nutrition Assistance for Children (SNAC) program starting in 2025. If your nephew is under 6 and you've added him to your CalFresh household, you should receive an additional benefit on your EBT card specifically for him. Make sure he's properly listed on your case during recertification!

Oh that makes sense about the March 1st thing! I wasn't sure if I was supposed to get some kind of retroactive payment or something. And thanks for the info about SNAC - I did add my nephew to my household during recertification but the worker didn't mention SNAC specifically. Is that something I need to apply for separately or will it be automatic since he's on my case now?

I got the new amount already?? My deposit hit yesterday and it was $490 for me and my daughter. Maybe it depends on which county ur in? I'm in Alameda.

That's not supposed to happen - the COLA increases are implemented statewide at the same time. It's possible you had a mid-period adjustment for another reason (like income change) that coincidentally brought your benefit to around the new amount. The official 2025 COLA adjustment for CalFresh will be effective March 1st for everyone in California regardless of county.

the increase is supposed to start next month but sometimes they mess up the timing. last year mine took 2 months to actually show the right amount and then they had to give me backpay for the difference. you should call your county office to make sure they have it set up right for march. also that PEBT thing ended they dont do that anymore its all just regular calfresh now

This isn't completely accurate. While the P-EBT program under that specific name has changed, California has implemented the SNAC program (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance for Children) as a replacement. It provides additional benefits for young children in CalFresh households. And regarding the increase timing - it's not a mistake that February benefits are still at the old amount. The official implementation date for the 2025 COLA is March 1st, so everyone should see the new amount in their March deposits.

I just went through the same thing!! My worker told me $490 for household of 2 starting in March. I wish they would make these increases bigger though... $51 extra doesn't go far with food prices these days. I'm paying almost $7 for a gallon of milk now!!! The whole system needs to be redone IMO.

SERIOUSLY!! My daughter eats so much now that she's a teenager and the benefits barely last 3 weeks. And dont even get me started on EGGS!! 😡

Have you tried calling your county's CalFresh office to check? I spent 3 hours on hold last week trying to sort out a similar issue with my benefits. It was a nightmare getting through to anyone! I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that held my place in line and had a worker call me back. Saved me hours of waiting! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 The worker explained that the new benefit amounts are loaded in March, not February. Also, they told me the SNAC program (what replaced P-EBT) should be automatic as long as your nephew is properly listed on your case.

That service sounds useful! I tried calling yesterday but gave up after 45 minutes on hold. I'll check out that link, thanks! And good to know about SNAC being automatic. I'll wait until March and if I don't see both the regular increase and something for my nephew, I'll try calling again.

Just to provide official information: The 2025 CalFresh COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) takes effect on March 1st, 2025. The maximum monthly allotment for a household of 2 will increase from $439 to $492 (not $490, there's a slight difference). Your February issuance was correct at the 2024 rate. Regarding children under 6: The SNAC program provides supplemental nutrition benefits for young children in CalFresh households. Your nephew should automatically qualify if he's been properly added to your case. The benefit amount is approximately $77/month per eligible child under 6 and should appear as an additional deposit on your regular EBT card (not a separate card like the old P-EBT program used). I recommend checking your next deposit in March. If you don't see both the increased base amount AND the additional SNAC benefit for your nephew, contact your county office for assistance.

Wait so it's actually $492 not $490? My worker definitely said $490. Why can't they all get their information straight?? This is so frustrating.

Yes, the exact amount is $492. Sometimes workers round numbers when speaking with clients, or they might have been looking at outdated information before the final rates were published. The difference is only $2, but you're right that accuracy is important. The official benefit charts should be available on your county's website if you want to verify the exact amounts.

Thanks everyone for clarifying this! I'm new to CalFresh and just got approved last month, so I'm still learning how everything works. My first deposit was only $219 for just myself (household of 1) and I was wondering if that would go up in March too. From what I'm reading here, it sounds like all the benefit amounts increase with the COLA adjustment, not just the higher household sizes. Is that right? Also, I'm really glad I found this community - navigating all the CalFresh rules and timing has been confusing and you all seem to have way more accurate information than what I got from my county worker during orientation!

Welcome to CalFresh and to the community! Yes, you're absolutely right - the COLA adjustment applies to all household sizes, including single-person households. Your benefit should increase from $219 to approximately $233 starting with your March deposit (the exact amount might vary slightly based on your specific circumstances). And I totally agree about this community being helpful! When I first started, I was so confused about timing, deposit dates, recertification requirements - you name it. The people here have been a lifesaver for getting straight answers when county workers sometimes give conflicting info. Don't hesitate to ask questions as they come up!
