Can I change my EBT PIN before it arrives in the mail? CalFresh card activated but waiting on PIN

Just got approved for CalFresh and received my EBT card yesterday, but still waiting on the PIN to come in the mail. My kids are hungry and I need to use these benefits ASAP! The county worker said it could take another 3-5 business days for the PIN to arrive. Is there any way to create/change a PIN before I get the official one? Can I call some number or go online to set it up myself? Really don't want to wait another week when we need groceries now. Anyone know a workaround?

Ugh that's so frustrating! Did you just have to wait the full time? Did calling the EBT customer service help at all?

Unfortunately, you cannot create a PIN before receiving the initial one. The system requires the first PIN for security verification purposes before allowing changes. However, you do have options: 1. Call your county office and explain the urgency - they can sometimes expedite the PIN delivery or provide emergency food assistance while you wait 2. If you received your EBT card, the PIN letter was likely mailed the same day or shortly after, so it may arrive sooner than the 3-5 day estimate 3. Check if your county offers emergency food resources like food banks that can help while you wait The PIN is a security feature to prevent unauthorized use, which is why they don't allow setting it up before receiving the original one.

I TRIED CALLING MY COUNTY WORKER FOR 3 DAYS STRAIGHT AND NO ONE PICKED UP!!! The system is designed to make us suffer. I ended up having to borrow money from my sister just to feed my kids while waiting for that stupid PIN. So ridiculous.

I don't think so... but I did hear some counties might let you pick up your PIN in person if you go to the office? Not sure if that's true but might be worth asking about. When I got my CalFresh EBT last year I just had to wait for the mail. It's annoying they don't just let you set it up online!

That's a good idea! I'll call tomorrow and see if I can pick it up in person. Thanks for the suggestion!

I work with a lot of CalFresh clients and the PIN situation is frustrating for many families in urgent need. Here's the official answer: You cannot create a PIN before receiving the initial one for security reasons. However, some options that have worked for my clients: 1. Request an emergency PIN assignment by explaining your urgent situation to your eligibility worker 2. If you've been approved and funds are loaded, ask if your local office offers same-day PIN pickup with proper identification 3. Check if you qualify for expedited services (should get benefits within 3 days if eligible) Also, keep trying the customer service line - sometimes getting through to a live person makes all the difference.

This is great advice! I went through something similar last month and wish I'd known about the emergency PIN assignment. My worker never mentioned that was possible.

I was in your exact situation last year and I spent HOURS trying to reach someone at the county office. Kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold forever. My neighbor told me about this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped her get through to her CalFresh worker. They basically wait on hold for you and call you when a real person answers. I was skeptical but they got me through to someone who helped expedite my PIN issue. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Saved me days of waiting!

Thank you for the tip! I hadn't heard of this service before but I'm definitely going to check it out. Getting through to someone seems like the best option right now.

Yes it worked for me! I was surprised too. They just wait on hold so you don't have to, then call you when someone answers. Saved me from listening to that awful hold music for hours.

my cousin said she just went to the atm and tried random pins till she got it right lol but i think she was lying

Please don't try this approach! After 4 incorrect PIN attempts, your EBT card will be locked for security reasons. This would create an even longer delay in accessing your benefits as you'd need to request a new card and PIN.

I got approved in about 14 days. They're supposed to make a determination within 30 days, so you should hear something soon. Did you check your status on BenefitsCal? Sometimes they need more verification documents but don't contact you.

Update for the community: As of 2025, California is piloting a new system in some counties that allows EBT recipients to select their PIN digitally through the BenefitsCal portal after identity verification. However, this is not yet available statewide. You can check if your county is participating by logging into your BenefitsCal account and looking for the "EBT Digital Services" option. If it's there, you may be able to set up your PIN without waiting for mail.

Thank you for this information! I just checked my BenefitsCal account and unfortunately my county isn't part of the pilot yet. But that's great to know they're working on improving the system!

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to resolve your PIN issue? If you're still waiting, I recommend contacting your local food bank as well. They can often provide emergency food assistance while you wait for your CalFresh benefits to become usable.

I finally got through to my worker using that Claimyr service someone suggested! They were able to help me get an emergency PIN over the phone after verifying my identity. Got groceries yesterday - what a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.
