CalFresh benefits transferred to Liberty Tax debit card - When will Middle Class Tax Refund arrive?

Hey everyone, I'm a little confused about how the Middle Class Tax Refund (the California stimulus) works with my CalFresh benefits. I get my monthly CalFresh loaded onto my Liberty Tax Deep Blue Debit Card (it was the fastest option when I applied last year). My caseworker said the stimulus wouldn't affect my food benefits, but I'm wondering if anyone with the same card has gotten their MCTC payment yet? My sister got hers on her regular bank account weeks ago, but nothing on my Liberty card. Do I need to update something with the county? Really hoping this comes through soon as my car needs repairs and I'm counting on that money.

I also use that card for my snap benifits but the tax refund and calfresh are different things. The tax refund goes to whatever bank info you had on file with the state when u filed taxes, not your ebt card. Hope that helps

Oh wait seriously?? I thought since I get CalFresh on that card, they'd send the refund there too. I didn't file taxes last year because I didn't make enough... does that mean I won't get anything?

The Middle Class Tax Refund (California's stimulus payment) and CalFresh are completely separate programs. If you didn't file taxes in 2020, you may still be eligible if you received CalFresh in February-October 2023, but the payment would come as a debit card mailed to your address on file with the county, not loaded to your Liberty Tax card. CalFresh recipients should have received their MCTC payments by January 2025 at the latest. If you haven't received yours, I'd recommend contacting the FTB (Franchise Tax Board) directly - they handle the MCTC, not the county CalFresh office.

Thank you so much for explaining! I've been checking the wrong place this whole time. So even though I get CalFresh on my Liberty card, they'll just mail me a separate card for the tax refund? I moved in November so I hope they have my updated address with the county.

I had a similar issue last month trying to figure out where my MCTC was. I called the FTB but couldn't get through after trying for THREE DAYS!! Total nightmare. Then someone told me about Claimyr.com and it got me through to a live person in less than 10 minutes. They have this system that waits on hold for you and calls you back when someone answers. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 that shows how it works. The FTB rep told me my payment was delayed because of my address change but they fixed it right away.

Does this actually work? I hate being on hold forever with these govt offices. Might try this for my calfresh recert interview too lol

Here's some accurate information regarding the Middle Class Tax Refund and CalFresh benefits: 1. The MCTC (California's stimulus) is administered by the Franchise Tax Board, not the CalFresh program 2. If you filed a 2020 tax return, your payment would be issued based on the refund method you selected then (direct deposit or mail) 3. If you didn't file taxes but received CalFresh during the qualifying period, you would receive a debit card by mail 4. Your Liberty Tax card is separate from this process - it's just how you receive your regular CalFresh benefits 5. Update your address with both the county CalFresh office AND the FTB if you've moved For CalFresh recipients who didn't file taxes, the MCTC debit cards should have been mailed by now. I would contact the FTB directly at 800-542-9332 to check your status.

This is super helpful, thank you! I actually did update my address with CalFresh when I moved, but I didn't know I needed to update with FTB separately. I'll try calling that number tomorrow. Really hope I didn't miss out on this money!

OMG the same thing happened to me!!! I was waiting for months checking my Liberty card and got nothing. So frustrating! I finally called and they said they mailed a separate card to my old address from like 2 years ago?? Make sure you call FTB asap because they can stop that card and send a new one if its been less than 90 days since it was issued. If its been longer you might be screwed honestly. The whole system is a joke.

Oh no, that sounds terrible! I'm definitely calling first thing tomorrow. Did you end up getting yours eventually or are you still waiting?

I get $231 for just myself, which barely lasts 3 weeks. I had to start going to the food bank too. The MCTC would help so much right now with everything being so expensive.

Update on my situation - I finally got through to FTB about my MCTC after using that Claimyr service I mentioned. Turns out they had sent my card to my old address even though I updated it with CalFresh months before. The rep said they can cancel that card and issue a new one to my current address, but it'll take 3-4 weeks. Just a heads up for anyone else dealing with this - make sure they have your current mailing address!

Thanks for the update! I'm definitely going to call tomorrow. Good to know they can reissue it if it went to my old place.

I want to clarify something important: If you're still actively receiving CalFresh benefits, make sure you're clear which office you need to contact. For regular CalFresh questions, contact your county office. For Middle Class Tax Refund questions, contact the Franchise Tax Board at 800-542-9332. These are completely separate programs with different contact points. Also, updating your address with one agency doesn't automatically update it with others - you need to notify each program separately about address changes.

That makes sense but it's frustrating they don't communicate with each other. I'll make sure to call FTB specifically about the MCTC. Appreciate all the help everyone!
