CalFresh EBT not working to order groceries online through Walmart - anyone else?

Trying to order groceries through Walmart's website with my CalFresh EBT card since my car broke down, but keep getting payment errors. I've double-checked my balance ($487) and tried both the app and website but no luck. Called the EBT customer service and they said my card is active with no restrictions. Has anyone else experienced this? Is Walmart still accepting CalFresh for delivery in 2025? The county office is impossible to reach by phone and I'm out of food for my kids. Any tips on how to get this working or alternative delivery options that take EBT?

ya walmart still takes ebt online i just used mine yesterday but u gotta pay the delivery fee separate with a credit card they dont let u use ebt for that part

Thanks! Do you use the same payment method screen or is there a special place to enter EBT? I keep getting to checkout and it says payment method not accepted.

There's a specific way you need to add your EBT card on Walmart's site. First, make sure you're using the correct website - some people accidentally use Walmart+ which processes differently. Go to regular Walmart.com, then look for 'Payment Methods' in your account settings. Add your EBT card there BEFORE starting your order. When you checkout, you'll need to select which items are EBT-eligible (most food items are) and which aren't. Then you'll need a separate payment method for the delivery fee and any non-eligible items. If that doesn't work, try removing your card completely and adding it again - sometimes their system glitches with EBT cards.

Thank you so much for these detailed steps! I just tried removing and re-adding my card in the account settings first like you suggested, and it worked! I didn't realize I needed to add it to my account before starting the order. Really appreciate the help.

Check if your address is actually in Walmart's EBT delivery zone. They expanded a lot in 2024, but not all areas are covered. Also, make sure you're not trying to use EBT cash (if you have CalWorks too) - only regular CalFresh benefits work for online orders. The system should show you which items are EBT eligible with a little "EBT" tag next to them. Another thing: your total order needs to be at least $35 for delivery with EBT.

not all walmarts do the ebt delivery even if your in the zone, i had this problem and had to use amazon fresh instead they take calfresh too

Thanks for mentioning the $35 minimum! That might have been part of my problem. My cart was only $32 so I added a few more items. I'll also check out Amazon Fresh as a backup.

I HATE the Walmart online system with EBT!!! Been using it for months and randomly stops working ALL THE TIME! Their customer service is USELESS with EBT issues. Last time I called they kept transferring me between departments for 45 MINUTES and nobody could help. Then suddenly it started working again two days later with NO explanation!!! The system is broken and nobody fixes it because poor people using benefits don't matter to these companies!!!

0 coins

That's so frustrating! Did you find any alternative services that work better with EBT? I can't afford to wait days for this to randomly start working again.

I went through this exact same problem last month. The issue wasn't actually with Walmart but with my EBT card needing to be registered for online purchases at the county level. Apparently, they implemented some new security protocols in 2025 where your EBT card needs to be specifically approved for online transactions. I spent DAYS trying to reach someone at the county office with no luck - constant busy signals and disconnections. Finally, I discovered a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual CalFresh worker in under 30 minutes. They basically hold your place in the phone queue and call you when a real person picks up. The worker was able to update my EBT card settings right away, and Walmart started working immediately after. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 showing how it works. Totally saved me from having to take time off work to physically go to the office.

does that service cost money? seems weird to pay just to talk to calfresh ppl

0 coins

Yeah, there is a fee, but I figured it was worth it instead of missing work to go to the office in person or spending hours redialing. For me it was either that or no groceries for my kids for another week. But everyone's situation is different.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll try the other suggestions first to see if it's just a Walmart issue, but if I need to reach the county, I'll definitely check out that service. I've already spent hours trying to get through on the phone with no luck.

try instacart they take ebt now too but make sure u check which stores on there take it not all of them do and the app is way easier than walmart

0 coins

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll download Instacart and check it out. Do you know if they have the same $35 minimum?

One more thing to check - if you've been receiving CalFresh for a while but this is your first time using it online, your county might have your card flagged for in-store use only. This is a security feature they started implementing in some counties. If the troubleshooting with Walmart doesn't work, this could be the issue. You might need to contact your county worker to specifically enable online purchases for your EBT card.

Update: I got it working! It was a combination of issues - I needed to add my card in account settings first, and my order was under the $35 minimum. After fixing those things, it went through perfectly. Thanks everyone for all your help! For anyone else having this problem, try these steps before assuming it's a county issue.

So glad you got it working! This thread is going to be super helpful for other people dealing with the same issue. I've bookmarked it because I know I'll probably run into this problem eventually too. The step-by-step troubleshooting here is way better than anything I could find on Walmart's help pages.

0 coins

Totally agree! I'm new to using EBT for online orders and this whole thread has been like a masterclass. Way more helpful than the official help pages that just say "contact customer service" for everything. Really appreciate how everyone shared their actual experiences and solutions that worked.

This is such a comprehensive troubleshooting guide! I'm dealing with a similar issue but with Amazon Fresh - my EBT card keeps getting declined even though I have benefits available. Based on what everyone shared here, I'm going to try removing and re-adding my card in my account settings first, then make sure my order is over the minimum threshold. It's so frustrating when these systems glitch, especially when you're depending on them for groceries. Thanks for documenting all the solutions that actually worked!

0 coins

Hope those steps work for you with Amazon Fresh! I had a similar issue with Amazon a few months ago and it turned out my card needed to be re-verified in their system. One tip - Amazon Fresh sometimes processes EBT differently than regular Amazon, so make sure you're using the Fresh app specifically and not just the regular Amazon app. Also, their minimum order threshold can vary by location, so double-check that too. Let us know if you get it sorted out!

Just wanted to add another alternative that's worked well for me - Target's same-day delivery through Shipt also accepts EBT now. I've found their system to be more reliable than Walmart's, and they don't have as many random glitches. The interface is pretty straightforward - you just select EBT as your payment method at checkout and it automatically filters to show only eligible items. They also have a lower minimum order requirement ($35 vs Walmart's $35, but sometimes Target runs promotions with no minimum). Plus their customer service actually knows how to help with EBT issues, unlike some other places. Worth checking if Target delivers in your area as a backup option!

0 coins

This is really helpful to know about Target/Shipt! I didn't even realize they accepted EBT for delivery. The customer service point you mentioned is huge - it's so frustrating when you call for help and the rep has never even heard of EBT being used online. I'm definitely going to check if Target delivers to my area. Having multiple backup options seems smart since these systems seem to randomly break down. Thanks for sharing another reliable alternative!

This whole thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm new to the community and to using EBT for online grocery orders. I've been putting off trying online delivery because I was worried about running into exactly these kinds of technical issues, but seeing all the detailed troubleshooting steps and alternative options you all shared gives me confidence to actually try it. It's really reassuring to know there are multiple services (Walmart, Amazon Fresh, Instacart, Target/Shipt) and that there are workarounds when things don't work right away. The step about adding your EBT card to account settings BEFORE starting your order seems like such a simple but crucial detail that I never would have figured out on my own. Thanks to everyone for sharing their real experiences - this is exactly the kind of practical advice that actually helps!

Welcome to the community! Your nervousness about trying online EBT orders is totally understandable - I was the same way when I first started. But honestly, once you get past the initial setup hurdles, it's been a lifesaver for me, especially during times when getting to the store is difficult. One thing I'd add to all the great advice here is to maybe start with a small test order first, just to make sure everything works smoothly before you rely on it for a big grocery haul. That way if you run into any issues, you're not stuck without food while troubleshooting. Also, it helps to have the customer service numbers saved in your phone for both your EBT card and whatever delivery service you choose - makes it faster to get help if something goes wrong. Good luck with your first order!

Just want to echo what everyone else said - this thread is pure gold! I've been struggling with EBT online orders for weeks and couldn't find clear answers anywhere. The fact that you need to add your card to account settings FIRST is such a game-changer. I also had no idea about the $35 minimum or that some counties require special authorization for online purchases. Really appreciate everyone taking the time to share what actually worked instead of just saying "call customer service." Going to try these steps this weekend and finally get groceries delivered. This community is awesome!

Welcome to the community! I'm also pretty new here and was amazed at how helpful everyone is. I've been using EBT for a while but only recently started trying online orders, and like you said, finding clear step-by-step guidance was nearly impossible until I found this thread. The community here really knows their stuff from actual experience, not just reading help pages. Definitely try a small test order first like others suggested - that's what I did and it saved me a lot of stress. Hope your weekend grocery delivery goes smoothly!

This thread should honestly be pinned or turned into a guide! As someone who works part-time at a grocery store and sees customers struggle with EBT issues daily, I can confirm that most of the problems people face are exactly what's been covered here. The account setup issue is HUGE - so many people try to just enter their card at checkout without adding it to their profile first, and then get frustrated when it doesn't work. Also want to add that if you're having issues with any of these services, try placing your order during off-peak hours (like mid-morning on weekdays) instead of evenings or weekends. The payment processing systems seem to get overloaded during busy times and EBT transactions are often the first to get glitchy. I've noticed way fewer payment errors when people shop during slower periods.

0 coins

That's such a great point about timing! I never thought about how busy periods might affect EBT processing specifically, but it totally makes sense. Working in grocery, you probably see all the behind-the-scenes issues that customers don't realize are happening. The idea of pinning this thread is brilliant too - I've already bookmarked it because there's so much practical info here that you just can't find in official help documentation. Your tip about mid-morning weekday orders is definitely something I'll try. It's frustrating enough when these systems don't work without having to deal with peak-time server issues on top of it!

This has been such an incredibly useful thread! I'm a single mom who just started receiving CalFresh benefits and was really intimidated by the idea of using EBT online. Reading through everyone's experiences and solutions has given me the confidence to actually try it. The detailed troubleshooting steps - especially about adding your card to account settings first and checking minimum order amounts - are exactly what I needed. It's so refreshing to find a community where people share real, practical advice instead of just telling you to "contact support." I'm planning to start with a small test order this week using the steps outlined here. Having multiple backup options (Walmart, Amazon Fresh, Target/Shipt, Instacart) is really reassuring too since I can't always get to the store in person. Thank you all for creating such a comprehensive resource - this should definitely be saved as a reference guide for anyone dealing with EBT online ordering issues!

Welcome to CalFresh and to online ordering! Your approach of starting with a small test order is really smart - that's exactly what I wish I had done when I first started. As a fellow parent, I totally understand the intimidation factor, but honestly once you get past that first successful order, it becomes so much easier. One small addition to all the great advice here: if you're ordering from multiple stores to compare, keep track of which payment setup steps you did for each one, because they're all slightly different. I made the mistake of assuming they all worked the same way and ended up having to troubleshoot each platform separately. Also, don't get discouraged if your first attempt doesn't work perfectly - even with all these great tips, sometimes it takes a try or two to get everything set up just right. This community is always here to help if you run into any snags!

This thread is amazing! I've been having the exact same issue with my EBT card not working on Walmart's website for the past week. I tried everything I could think of but never thought about the account settings step. Just followed the advice here about removing and re-adding my card to my Walmart account BEFORE starting my order, and it worked perfectly! My groceries are being delivered tomorrow morning. The $35 minimum tip was clutch too - my cart was only $28 and I was wondering why it kept failing at checkout. Added some basics to get over the threshold and everything went through smoothly. You all just saved me from another week of trying to figure out bus routes to get to the store with my toddler. Seriously can't thank this community enough!

So happy to hear you got it working! That feeling of relief when the order finally goes through is the best, especially when you've got a little one and transportation is tricky. It's crazy how such a simple step like adding the card to account settings first can make all the difference, but none of the official help pages mention it clearly. This community really came through with the real-world solutions. Enjoy your grocery delivery tomorrow - having food delivered when you're managing everything solo with a toddler is such a game changer!

This thread is incredible - definitely saving it as my go-to reference for EBT online ordering! I've been hesitant to try online grocery delivery because I was worried about running into payment issues, but seeing all these detailed solutions gives me confidence to finally give it a shot. The step about adding your EBT card to account settings BEFORE placing an order seems so obvious now but I never would have thought of that. Also really appreciate everyone mentioning the alternative services beyond just Walmart - having backup options like Amazon Fresh, Target/Shipt, and Instacart makes me feel way more secure about relying on delivery when I can't get to the store. The tip about timing orders during off-peak hours is brilliant too. This is exactly the kind of practical, real-world advice you can't find anywhere else. Thanks to everyone for sharing what actually works!

You're so right about this being an incredible resource! I just joined this community recently and I'm blown away by how helpful everyone is with sharing actual working solutions instead of generic advice. The account settings tip has been mentioned so many times in this thread because it really is that crucial - I wish the delivery apps would make that step more obvious in their setup process. Your point about having multiple backup options is spot on too. I learned the hard way that relying on just one service can leave you stuck when their system goes down or has issues. Having Walmart, Amazon Fresh, Target/Shipt, and Instacart all as options means if one isn't working, you've got alternatives to try. Definitely recommend starting with a small test order like others suggested - it takes the pressure off and lets you get familiar with whichever platform you choose. Good luck with your first delivery order!

This thread has been such a lifesaver! I'm a college student who just qualified for CalFresh and was completely overwhelmed trying to figure out online grocery ordering. The step-by-step troubleshooting here is better than any official help documentation I've found. I had no idea about the account settings requirement or the minimum order thresholds - those details make all the difference. What really stands out to me is how everyone shared multiple backup options instead of just focusing on one service. As someone new to all this, having Walmart, Amazon Fresh, Target/Shipt, and Instacart as alternatives gives me so much peace of mind. I'm definitely starting with a small test order this weekend using these tips. The timing advice about ordering during off-peak hours is something I never would have considered either. Thank you all for creating such a comprehensive guide - this community is amazing for actually helping people solve real problems!

Welcome to the community and congrats on getting CalFresh! Being a college student and navigating all this stuff can be really overwhelming, but you're in the right place for support. Your plan to start with a small test order is perfect - that's exactly what I did when I was new to EBT online ordering. One thing I'd add that might be helpful for your situation: a lot of these delivery services offer student discounts or free trials for their delivery fees, which can really help stretch your budget since you still need to pay delivery/service fees separately from your EBT benefits. Also, if you're living in dorms or shared housing, double-check that your address accepts grocery deliveries - some campus housing has specific delivery policies. The multiple backup options really are key because college schedules can be unpredictable and you want to know you can get groceries when you need them. Feel free to ask if you run into any issues with your first order - this community is super helpful with troubleshooting!

Welcome to the community! As someone who also navigated CalFresh as a college student, I totally get how overwhelming it can be at first. One additional tip that might help - if you're living near campus, check if any of the local grocery stores partner with these delivery services. Sometimes smaller chains that accept EBT in-store also work with Instacart or other platforms, and they might have better deals or less crowded systems than the big box stores. Also, keep your EBT customer service number handy in your phone - I learned that lesson the hard way when my card got temporarily locked during finals week! The community here is super supportive, so don't hesitate to post if you run into any snags with your first order.

This thread is absolutely incredible - I wish I had found this community sooner! I've been struggling with EBT online orders for months and getting nowhere with customer service. The detailed troubleshooting steps everyone shared here are pure gold, especially the account settings tip that seems to solve most issues. What really impresses me is how supportive everyone is and how you all took the time to share what actually worked from real experience, not just copy-paste help desk responses. I'm bookmarking this thread and definitely recommending this community to other people I know who are dealing with similar EBT online ordering frustrations. Having multiple service options (Walmart, Amazon Fresh, Target/Shipt, Instacart) and backup strategies makes such a difference. This is exactly the kind of practical help that people actually need - thank you all for creating such an amazing resource!

I'm so glad you found this thread helpful! I just discovered this community recently too and I'm amazed at how much practical, real-world knowledge everyone shares here. You're absolutely right about the quality of advice - it's such a relief to find solutions that actually work instead of generic customer service responses that don't address the specific quirks of EBT online ordering. The fact that so many people took the time to share their troubleshooting experiences and backup options really shows how supportive this community is. I've already learned more from reading through these comments than I did from hours of searching official help pages. Definitely planning to be more active here and hopefully contribute helpful info when I can. It's communities like this that make navigating these systems so much less stressful!
