If I could give 10 stars I would

If I could give 10 stars I would If I could give 10 stars I would Such an amazing service so needed during the times when EDD almost never picks up Claimyr gets me on the phone with EDD every time without fail faster. A much needed service without Claimyr I would have never received the payment I needed to support me during my postpartum recovery. Thank you so much Claimyr!

Really made a difference

Really made a difference, save me time and energy from going to a local office for making the call.

Worth not wasting your time calling for hours.

Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Today my call dropped because of EDD and Claimyr heard my concern on the same chat and another call was made within the hour.

An incredibly helpful service

An incredibly helpful service! Got me connected to a CA EDD agent without major hassle (outside of EDD's agents dropping calls – which Claimyr has free protection for). If you need to file a new claim and can't do it online, pay the $ to Claimyr to get the process started. Absolutely worth it!

Consistent,frustration free, quality Service.

Used this service a couple times now. Before I'd call 200 times in less than a weak frustrated as can be. But using claimyr with a couple hours of waiting i was on the line with an representative or on hold. Dropped a couple times but each reconnected not long after and was mission accomplished, thanks to Claimyr.

IT WORKS!! Not a scam!

I tried for weeks to get thru to EDD PFL program with no luck. I gave this a try thinking it may be a scam. OMG! It worked and They got thru within an hour and my claim is going to finally get paid!! I upgraded to the $60 call. Best $60 spent!

Hi Paolo! I'm new to this community but your post really resonates with me. My daughter also has her father's last name but he's not on the birth certificate (he was traveling for work when she was born). I was so anxious about applying for CalFresh because I thought the different last names would cause major issues. Reading all these responses has been such a huge relief! It's incredible to see how common this situation actually is and how knowledgeable and supportive everyone here is. The consistent message from former workers and people who've been through the process is so reassuring - CalFresh really does just care about who lives in your household, not the complicated family history behind the names. I love the advice about preparing that simple statement: "Household of 2 - me and my child, father not on birth certificate and doesn't live with us." That takes all the complexity out of it and focuses on what actually matters for the application. Thank you for asking this question! It's helped so many of us realize we're not alone in dealing with these situations. Your bravery in posting this has probably helped dozens of single moms who were putting off applying because of similar worries. You're doing an amazing job advocating for your daughter, and this community is lucky to have you! Good luck with your application - you've definitely got this! 💕

Hi Marcus! Welcome to our community! It's so wonderful to see how this thread has helped yet another person feel more confident about their situation. Your experience with your daughter's father being away for work is exactly the kind of normal life circumstance that can create these paperwork complications, but as we've all learned, it's really not the obstacle we thought it would be for CalFresh. I've been absolutely amazed by how supportive and knowledgeable everyone in this community is. When I first posted my question, I was feeling so isolated and worried about having to explain this complicated family situation. But seeing how many people have navigated similar challenges successfully - and hearing from actual former CalFresh workers - has completely transformed my understanding of how the system works. That simple statement format really has become the perfect solution: "Household of 2 - me and my child, father not on birth certificate and doesn't live with us." It cuts right to what the eligibility workers actually need to know without getting lost in personal details that aren't relevant to the benefits calculation. Thank you for your kind words about advocating for my daughter! That means so much coming from someone who understands exactly what this situation feels like. I'm just grateful this thread has been able to help other parents who were hesitating to apply because of similar concerns. We're all just trying to do our best for our kids, and it makes such a difference to know we have this community's support. Best of luck with your application when you're ready to apply! 💕

Hi Paolo! I'm new to this community but wanted to share my experience since I was in a very similar situation just a few months ago. My baby has her father's last name but he's not on the birth certificate either (he was deployed overseas when I gave birth). I was absolutely terrified about my CalFresh application because of the different last names, but it turned out to be completely fine! The eligibility worker literally just asked "who lives in your household?" and when I said "just me and my daughter," that was the end of that conversation. They were much more focused on my income, expenses, and making sure I understood the reporting deadlines. The advice everyone's given you about writing down the key facts beforehand is spot-on: "Household of 2 - me and my child, father not on birth certificate and doesn't live with us." Having that simple statement ready really helped me stay calm and focused during the interview. Also, definitely apply for WIC too if you're breastfeeding! I got approved for both programs and they've been such a lifesaver. In my county, the offices are in the same building so I was able to handle both applications in one trip. You're doing such a great job advocating for your daughter. Don't let the anxiety about the name situation delay getting the help you need - this community has shown that it's really not the big deal we think it is! Good luck with your application! 💕

Emma, I've been following your thread all day and really hoping you were able to get the emergency housing assistance you and your children needed! As someone new to this community, I'm honestly amazed by the incredible outpouring of support and detailed guidance everyone has provided. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly educational - I had no idea there were so many different emergency housing programs available beyond just CalFresh. The distinction people made early on between CalFresh (food assistance) and CalWORKs (emergency housing vouchers) was so important, and all the specific program names like Temporary Homeless Assistance, Rapid Re-Housing, Emergency Family Shelter, and the Family Unification Program give such clear direction on exactly what to ask for. The practical advice has been equally valuable - from getting to the county office right when it opens at 8 AM, to bringing multiple copies of documents, to asking for the "Emergency Aid" desk specifically, to having backup resources like the Crisis Response Team and CORE emergency numbers. This community has essentially created a comprehensive roadmap for navigating emergency housing assistance in Sacramento County. As a parent myself, I can only imagine how stressful and scary this situation must be for you, but your proactive approach in reaching out for help shows what an incredible advocate you are for your children. With all these amazing resources and the strength you've already shown, I'm really hopeful that you found help today and are on a path toward housing stability. Please update us when you can - even as a newcomer, I feel genuinely invested in knowing that you and your kids are safe. This whole community is truly rooting for your family!

Diego, you've perfectly summarized what an incredible response this community has provided to Emma! As someone who's also new here, I'm genuinely moved by how people have shared both their personal experiences and professional knowledge to help a family in crisis. The level of detail - from specific program names to practical tips about timing and documentation - really shows how much everyone cares about helping families navigate these complex systems. I've been checking back all day too, hoping to hear how Emma's county office visit went. The comprehensive roadmap this community has created for accessing emergency housing assistance in Sacramento is honestly better than most official guides I've seen. Between the CalWORKs Temporary Homeless Assistance, the various shelter programs, Rapid Re-Housing options, and all the backup resources people have mentioned, Emma now has so many pathways to explore. Emma, if you're reading this, please know that even those of us who are new to this community are genuinely concerned about you and your children. You've shown incredible strength in advocating for your family, and with all these amazing resources at your disposal, I'm really hopeful that today brought you the help you needed. We're all pulling for you and waiting to hear that you and your kids are safe!

This is such valuable information for everyone navigating CalFresh! I had a similar shock recently when my protein bars got rejected at checkout - turns out anything labeled as a "nutritional supplement" or "meal replacement" doesn't qualify, even though they're basically just expensive candy bars with protein powder. It's wild that the system prioritizes bureaucratic classifications over actual nutritional value. I've started shopping with a backup debit card for exactly these situations, and the FreshEBT app everyone's mentioning sounds like a lifesaver. For your husband's DoorDash shifts, another option that usually works is those little packages of mixed nuts or trail mix - they're portable, filling, and I've never had issues with them being declined. The whole experience really highlights how these benefit programs weren't designed with modern eating habits or real nutritional needs in mind!

Yes! The protein bar thing is so frustrating too - you're absolutely right that they're basically expensive candy bars with protein but get rejected while actual candy is fine. The backup debit card strategy is smart, I learned that lesson the hard way! Trail mix is a great suggestion for portable protein snacks. It really does feel like these rules were made decades ago and nobody bothered updating them for how people actually eat today. Thanks for sharing your experience - it helps knowing we're all dealing with the same backwards system!

This thread is so helpful for someone just starting with CalFresh! I'm in the application process right now and had no idea about these weird eligibility rules. It's honestly ridiculous that the system allows candy and soda but rejects protein snacks like Slim Jims - seems completely backwards from a health perspective. The FreshEBT app recommendation keeps coming up and sounds like an absolute must-have to avoid checkout embarrassment. I'm definitely bookmarking all these alternative suggestions (cheese sticks, pepperoni, nuts) for when I start shopping with my benefits. It's frustrating that we have to work around such an outdated classification system, but this community makes it so much easier to navigate. Thanks for sharing your experience and starting such an informative discussion!

This thread has been absolutely amazing to read through! I'm completely new to CalFresh (just submitted my application last week and still waiting for approval) and honestly had no idea how complicated it could be just to check your balance or get basic information. Reading everyone's experiences with the phone system failures is both terrifying and reassuring - terrifying because I can see what I might be in for, but reassuring because there are clearly so many workarounds that actually work. I'm already bookmarking this thread and planning to set up multiple backup methods like the ebtEDGE app and mapping out grocery stores that can print balance receipts before I even get my card. It's honestly mind-blowing that we need this level of preparation just to access basic benefits, but this community's collective knowledge is incredible. Thank you to everyone who shared their real-world solutions - this is exactly the kind of practical information that new people like me desperately need but can't find anywhere in the official materials!

Welcome to the community @94b6fced1c00! You're being so smart by preparing ahead of time - I wish I had been that proactive when I first started. I'm also pretty new to CalFresh (got my card about 6 weeks ago) and this thread has honestly been like a survival guide. The fact that you're already thinking about setting up backup methods before you even have your card shows you're going to handle this system way better than most of us did starting out! One thing I'd add to your preparation list is to also write down or screenshot the customer service phone numbers and best calling times that people mentioned here - having that info easily accessible on your phone will save you so much time when you actually need it. It really is crazy that we need this much strategy just for basic benefits access, but at least we're all figuring it out together. Good luck with your application approval!

This thread has been such an incredible resource! I'm about 2 months into my CalFresh journey and have experienced the exact same phone system nightmares everyone is describing. Just last week I spent an entire afternoon calling repeatedly, only to get disconnected every single time after waiting 30+ minutes. It's honestly infuriating that we have to become detective-level experts in workarounds just to check our own benefit balances! I've already tried several suggestions from this thread - the grocery store receipt trick worked perfectly at my local Kroger, and the early morning calling strategy finally got me through yesterday. The ebtEDGE app has been a game changer too as a backup option. It's really disheartening that the system is so broken, but this community's collective knowledge has made navigating it so much less stressful. For anyone else struggling with these issues, definitely try the multiple backup approach that others have mentioned - having several different ways to check your balance saved me from a lot of anxiety when planning grocery trips!

my sister just got calfresh last month and she had benefits in like 5 days but she has 3 kids so maybe thats why it was fast? idk how it works exactly but i think families with kids get prioritized

Households with children don't automatically get prioritized for faster processing unless they also meet the criteria for expedited services (very low income/resources). However, families with children often qualify for higher benefit amounts based on household size. Each county processes applications in the order received, but expedited applications get moved to the front of the line regardless of household composition.

UPDATE: I called this morning and had to wait on hold for 45 minutes, but I finally spoke to someone! They confirmed I qualify for expedited services and are processing my application today. They said I should have benefits loaded onto an EBT card within 3 days and they'll mail the card to me ASAP. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and advice.

That's fantastic news! So glad you were able to get through and qualify for expedited services. Make sure to check your mail every day for that EBT card - sometimes they arrive faster than expected. And don't forget to also apply for EDD unemployment benefits since you mentioned losing your job. You can do that online at edd.ca.gov. Hope things start looking up for you soon!
