Where to find my FAFSA SAI number? Can't locate it anywhere on studentaid.gov
I submitted my FAFSA for 2025-2026 about two weeks ago and I keep hearing about this SAI number that's super important for determining my aid. But I can't find it ANYWHERE on my studentaid.gov account! I've looked through my confirmation email, logged into my dashboard multiple times, and even checked my college portals. Nothing. Is there a specific page I'm supposed to check? Do they email it separately? Or do I need to wait longer? My friend already got hers and I'm starting to worry something went wrong with my application. Help!

•How long ago did you submit? I'm wondering if there's a processing delay or something.

Your SAI (Student Aid Index) should appear on your Student Aid Report (SAR), which becomes available after your FAFSA is fully processed. Here's how to find it: 1. Log into studentaid.gov with your FSA ID 2. Go to "My Documents" 3. Click on "Student Aid Report" If you don't see your SAR yet, your application might still be processing. The typical timeframe is 3-5 business days for online applications, but it can take up to 3 weeks during peak periods. If you used the data retrieval tool to import tax info, that can add processing time too.

•Thank you! I didn't know I needed to check the Student Aid Report specifically. I'll go look for that right now.

When I did mine for my daughter last month we never got any email saying the SAI was ready. You just have to keep checking your account. Also the SAI number isn't labeled super clearly - it's kind of buried in the report.

•This is correct. The SAI is listed in the SAR, but it's not prominently displayed. Look for a line that says "Student Aid Index" or "SAI" followed by a number. It's usually around the middle of the report after your demographic information and before the EFC (which is now replaced by SAI in the new FAFSA).

Anyone else think it's RIDICULOUS how confusing they made this whole new FAFSA system?? Last year it was called EFC and now it's SAI and they hide it in some random document instead of putting it right on the main dashboard where it belongs. My daughter's financial aid office said they're getting HUNDREDS of calls about this exact issue. And then people wonder why students don't get all the aid they deserve!!!

I had to call the Federal Student Aid Information Center because I couldn't find my SAI anywhere after 3 weeks! Turns out my application had a verification flag and was sitting in limbo. I used Claimyr to get through to an agent (claimyr.com) since the regular phone line had a 2+ hour wait. They have this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent told me exactly what was wrong with my application and helped me fix it. Got my SAI two days later. Might be worth checking if your application is stuck in verification too.

•Oh wow, I didn't even think about verification being the issue. How did you know your application had been flagged? Was there any notification?

•There was no notification which was the frustrating part! The only way I found out was by talking to the FSA agent. They told me there should have been an email but their system has been glitchy with notifications. Definitely worth calling to check if you're worried.

My son just went through this same thing! We were looking all over for the SAI number. Turns out colleges can see it in their systems even before you can sometimes. His university financial aid office was able to tell us his SAI over the phone when we couldn't find it ourselves. Maybe try calling one of your schools?

•That's a smart idea! I'll try calling my top choice school tomorrow. Did they just ask for his name and birthdate to look it up?

•They asked for his full name, DOB, and the last 4 of his social. They found it right away in their system even though we couldn't see it on studentaid.gov yet!

One more thing to note: if your FAFSA was selected for verification, you won't see your SAI until that process is complete. About 18% of FAFSA applications get selected for verification, and it's not necessarily because you did anything wrong. If it's been more than 3 weeks, I recommend: 1. Check if you have any "Action Required" items in your studentaid.gov account 2. Look for any emails from FAFSA (check spam folder too) 3. Contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center directly The verification process can add 2-4 weeks to processing time, so don't panic yet!

•I just checked and don't see any action required items, but maybe they haven't flagged it in the system yet? I'll definitely call if I don't see anything by the end of this week. Thanks for the information about verification!

•That gives me hope! I'm at 14 days now, so maybe mine will appear soon too. Was your SAI what you expected it to be?

Just wanted to add that you can also request your SAR by mail if you're having trouble accessing it online. Call 1-800-4-FED-AID and request a paper copy. It'll take 7-10 days to arrive, but sometimes this is faster than waiting for technical issues to resolve. Also, for anyone confused about SAI vs the old EFC: they're similar but calculate differently. The SAI determines your eligibility for need-based aid like Pell Grants, while also being used by colleges to determine your institutional aid package. In general, a lower SAI means more potential aid.

•Thanks for explaining the difference! I've been hearing these terms used interchangeably and wasn't sure if they meant the same thing or not. Good to know about the paper option too, though hopefully the online version shows up soon.

Hey! I'm dealing with the exact same issue right now - submitted my FAFSA about 10 days ago and can't find my SAI anywhere. Reading through all these responses has been super helpful though! It sounds like the key things to check are: 1. Look in your Student Aid Report (SAR) under "My Documents" - not just the main dashboard 2. It can take up to 3 weeks to process, especially during busy periods 3. Check if your application got flagged for verification (no notification sometimes!) 4. Your college financial aid offices might be able to see it before you can I'm going to try logging in again and specifically looking for the SAR document since I was just checking the main page before. If that doesn't work, I'll call my school's financial aid office tomorrow. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - this new FAFSA system is definitely confusing but at least we're all figuring it out together!

Adding to what everyone else has shared - I just went through this process last week and wanted to mention a few things that helped me: If you're still not seeing your SAR after checking "My Documents," try logging out completely and logging back in. Sometimes the system doesn't refresh properly. Also, make sure you're using the same FSA ID you used to submit your FAFSA - I know that sounds obvious but my friend was accidentally using her mom's login! One thing I noticed is that the SAI number itself is pretty small and easy to miss in the SAR. It's usually listed as just a number (like "12345") next to "Student Aid Index" - not in a big bold box like you'd expect for something so important. And honestly, don't stress too much about the timing. I submitted mine on February 15th and didn't see my SAI until March 8th, so almost 3 weeks. My college's financial aid office said this year has been especially slow because of all the changes to the new FAFSA system. If you're really worried, definitely call that Federal Student Aid number (1-800-4-FED-AID) - they were actually pretty helpful when I called, and the wait wasn't as bad as I expected (about 45 minutes).

•This is really helpful! I didn't think about logging out and back in - that's such a simple thing but makes sense if there are refresh issues. I'm going to try that along with double-checking I'm using the right FSA ID. It's reassuring to hear that 3 weeks isn't uncommon, especially with all the system changes this year. I was starting to panic thinking something was seriously wrong with my application!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Submitted my FAFSA about 12 days ago and have been frantically searching everywhere for my SAI. This thread is honestly a lifesaver - I had no idea I needed to look specifically in the Student Aid Report under "My Documents." I was just checking the main dashboard and getting frustrated when I couldn't find anything. The tip about calling your college's financial aid office is genius too. I'm definitely going to try that if I still can't find my SAR by tomorrow. It's so reassuring to know that processing times of 2-3 weeks are normal right now, especially with all the new FAFSA changes. Has anyone else noticed that the studentaid.gov website seems really slow lately? Sometimes it takes forever to load pages or I get logged out randomly. Wondering if that's contributing to the delays or if it's just my internet connection. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - makes me feel way less alone in this confusing process!

•Yes! The website has been super slow for me too - pages take forever to load and I keep getting those random logouts. I think it might be related to all the traffic from people trying to check their FAFSA status. I've found it works better late at night or early morning when fewer people are probably using it. Also try clearing your browser cache if you haven't already - that helped speed things up a bit for me. You're definitely not alone in finding this whole process confusing!

I'm in the exact same boat! Submitted mine about 10 days ago and have been checking my studentaid.gov account obsessively. This thread has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea about looking in the Student Aid Report specifically. I was just staring at the main dashboard wondering where this mysterious SAI number was hiding. It's actually kind of comforting to know that so many of us are dealing with this same issue. The fact that processing times are taking 2-3 weeks right now makes me feel less like I messed something up. I'm going to try the logout/login trick someone mentioned and see if I can find my SAR document. If that doesn't work, I'll definitely call my school's financial aid office - such a smart suggestion! They might be able to see it in their system before it shows up on my account. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and tips. This new FAFSA system is definitely a learning curve for all of us!

•I'm so glad I found this thread too! I submitted mine 8 days ago and was starting to panic when I couldn't find my SAI anywhere. Reading everyone's experiences makes me feel so much better - I thought I was the only one struggling with this! The tip about checking the Student Aid Report specifically is huge. I've been looking everywhere EXCEPT there because I didn't even know that document existed. Going to log in right now and look for it. And if that doesn't work, I love the idea of calling the college directly - never would have thought they might have access to it before we do. It's crazy how they changed everything from EFC to SAI but didn't really explain where to find it or how long it takes. At least we're all figuring it out together! Thanks for sharing your timeline - helps me know I'm still within the normal waiting period.

Wow, reading through all these responses has been so reassuring! I submitted my FAFSA about 9 days ago and have been stressing out about not being able to find my SAI number anywhere. I was doing exactly what a lot of you were doing - just checking the main dashboard and getting more frustrated by the day. The key takeaways I'm getting from everyone's experiences: - Look specifically in the Student Aid Report (SAR) under "My Documents" - not the main page - Processing can take 2-3 weeks, especially with all the new FAFSA system changes - Try logging out completely and back in if the SAR isn't showing up - College financial aid offices might be able to see it before you can - About 18% of applications get flagged for verification which adds more time I'm going to try the SAR route first thing tomorrow, and if that doesn't work I'll call my top choice school's financial aid office. It's honestly such a relief to know that so many other people are dealing with this exact same issue! Makes me feel way less alone in navigating this confusing new system. Thanks everyone for sharing your timelines and tips - this community is amazing! 🙏

•This thread has been such a lifesaver for me too! I just submitted my FAFSA about a week ago and was getting really anxious about not seeing my SAI anywhere. It's so helpful to have everyone's experiences laid out like this - definitely going to check that Student Aid Report document first since I've been making the same mistake of only looking at the main dashboard. The timeline info is especially reassuring since I was worried something was wrong after just 7 days. Thanks for summarizing all the key points so clearly! Really appreciate having this supportive community to help navigate all these changes.

Just wanted to add my experience since I literally went through this exact same thing last week! I submitted my FAFSA on March 10th and was losing my mind trying to find my SAI number. After reading tons of forums and calling around, here's what finally worked for me: 1. The Student Aid Report (SAR) is definitely where you'll find it, but sometimes it takes a while to generate even after your FAFSA is "processed" 2. Clear your browser cache and try different browsers - I swear the site works better on Chrome than Safari 3. Check between 6-8 AM when the site is less busy - way faster loading times What really saved me was calling my state's financial aid office (not federal, but my state office). They were able to pull up my info immediately and confirm my SAI was 8,432. Turns out my application wasn't flagged for anything - it just took 16 days for the SAR to finally show up online. Don't panic if you're at the 2-week mark! The system is definitely slower this year. My college counselor said they've had students wait up to 25 days for their SAR to appear. Hang in there - it'll show up! Also pro tip: once you do get your SAI, screenshot it and save it somewhere safe. You'll need that number for scholarship applications and talking to financial aid offices.
