FAFSA won't let me submit parent income information despite marking dependent status
I'm ready to throw my laptop out the window! I've been trying to complete my son's 2025-2026 FAFSA for the past 10 days, and I keep hitting this bizarre roadblock. The system correctly identifies him as a dependent student, but then never provides ANY fields for me to enter our household income information! When we get to the end, it generates this message saying "SAI cannot be calculated because parents refused to provide information" - WHAT?! I never refused anything! There literally wasn't a section where I could input our W-2 data or tax return info. Has anyone else encountered this glitch? I've gone through the entire application three separate times now, and it's the same dead end each time. The correction option doesn't fix it either. How am I supposed to submit income information when the form doesn't even give me that option?

•Ugh, that's so discouraging to hear! Did you find any workaround at all? I'm desperate at this point.

This happened to me! It's a weird technical glitch with the new FAFSA system. What fixed it for me was completely starting over with a brand new application (not corrections). But here's the trick - you need to clear your browser cache completely first, then use a different browser than you used before. For some reason, the parent contribution section was showing up for me in Firefox but not in Chrome. Worth a try before you pull all your hair out!

•Thank you so much for this suggestion! I've only been using Chrome, so I'll definitely try Firefox today. Did you have to re-enter all the student information too, or was there some way to save that part?

•Unfortunately I had to re-enter everything from scratch, which was super annoying. But at least it finally worked! Just make sure your son is sitting with you since you'll need his FSA ID again for all the student sections.

I work at a college financial aid office, and we've seen this issue with dozens of families this application cycle. It's specifically related to how the system handles the dependency questions. When you get to the question about "Has the student completed and filed taxes for 2023?" make sure to answer that correctly, as it seems to trigger whether the parent section appears. Also, double-check that you're using the same email address consistently throughout the application. We've found that sometimes when parents use different email addresses at different points in the process, the system doesn't recognize them as the same contributor. If you continue having issues, I would recommend taking screenshots of each step to document that you're not being given the option to submit parental information.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! We did answer yes to the tax filing question since my son had a summer job last year. Could that be causing the issue? Should we change that answer even though he did file?

•If your son earned less than the filing requirement threshold (about $12,950 for single filers in 2023), you can technically answer "no" to that question even if he did file taxes. Many students file even when not required to get refunds of withheld wages. But more importantly, make sure on the student demographic page that you select "Yes" to the question "Does the student live with parents?" and then on the dependency determination page, don't select any of the special circumstance options. The parent contribution section should appear after that. If it still doesn't work, try the browser switch suggestion from the other commenter. The new FAFSA system has had numerous technical issues since the rollout.

I wasted 3 weeks with this EXACT problem!!! System is garbage. Everyone at FSA should be FIRED for this disaster of a rollout. My daughter might miss her school's priority deadline because of this nonsense.

•I'm so worried about missing deadlines too! Did you ever get it resolved?

•Finally got it fixed yesterday. Had to call FSA like 20 times before someone actually helped. They had to reset something on their end. Ridiculous waste of time.

After dealing with similar FAFSA frustrations, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me actually get through to a live FSA agent without the endless hold times. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent was able to see that there was a system flag on my daughter's application that was preventing the parent contribution section from appearing. They manually removed it and then we could finally complete the application correctly. Sometimes you just need to speak directly with someone who can look at what's happening on their end.

•It worked for me! The service connected me to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of the 3+ hours I was waiting before. The FSA agent explained that sometimes applications get stuck in a weird state where the system thinks you've already completed sections that you haven't actually seen.

Try checking if ur son accidentally answered one of the special circumstance questions wrong. My nephew had same problem and turns out he clicked the box about being in legal guardianship by mistake which made system think he was independent. Once we fixed that one answer the parent section showed up.

•That's a good point! I'll have him sit down with me and we'll go through all those questions again carefully. Thank you for the suggestion!

I've been helping families with FAFSA issues for years, and this new system has been particularly problematic. Here's what I recommend: 1. Completely log out of the studentaid.gov website 2. Clear your browser cache and cookies 3. Log back in with your FSA ID (parent) 4. Go to "I'm a Parent" section and verify your profile is complete 5. Then have your son log in with his FSA ID 6. Start a brand new FAFSA application (do not use the correction feature) 7. When you reach the "Parent Information" section, make sure your son properly transfers access to you The key is making sure both FSA IDs are properly linked in the system. The new FAFSA has a contributor model where the student must explicitly request parent contribution rather than just having parents fill out sections themselves. If this doesn't work, call Federal Student Aid directly - though be prepared for long wait times.

•Thank you for these detailed steps! I didn't realize there was a specific "I'm a Parent" section I needed to complete first. That might be what we're missing. We'll try this approach tonight.

UPDATE: We finally got it working! It was a combination of issues. First, we needed to use Firefox instead of Chrome as someone suggested. Second, my son had accidentally clicked the "homeless or self-supporting" box which made the system think he was independent even though he answered dependent on other questions. Finally, I had to complete my FSA ID profile completely before starting his application. For anyone else facing this issue - check EVERY dependency status question carefully and try a different browser! Thank you all for your help - his SAI finally calculated correctly and we can see the entire aid package now. What a relief!

•So glad you got it fixed! The new FAFSA system is really sensitive to those special circumstance questions.

•Excellent news! This is exactly why we tell families to review every question carefully. The new system seems to give precedence to certain independence criteria even when other answers indicate dependent status. Thanks for updating us!
