FAFSA SAI can't be calculated - IRS data transfer failure but no errors showing?
Completely frustrated with this FAFSA process for 2025-2026! My son's application was submitted two weeks ago, and we just got that awful message saying 'SAI cannot be calculated due to missing or conflicting information.' When I click on 'Next Steps' like they suggest, it shows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong! No errors flagged, no missing fields highlighted, nada. When I review our application, I'm noticing that a bunch of our financial information and household size data seems incomplete, even though we definitely completed those sections. It's like the IRS Data Retrieval Tool completely failed but didn't tell us. We definitely checked all the boxes to authorize IRS data transfer and electronically signed everything. His top choice university just emailed saying they received his FAFSA but "cannot process it because there's no income information included" and that "it appears there should have been income reported." Well DUH! We make income! We filed taxes! We authorized the data transfer! Has anyone else had the IRS data completely fail to transfer but the system not actually tell you that's what happened? How did you fix it? Did you have to manually enter everything?

•Have you found any solution yet? I'm seriously worried about missing his aid deadlines at this rate.

This is actually a fairly common issue with the new FAFSA system this year. There's a glitch in the IRS Data Retrieval Tool that sometimes fails to transfer your tax information but doesn't generate an error code. The system basically thinks you have no income (which is why your SAI can't be calculated). You have three options: 1. Wait for the system to eventually detect and fix the error (could take 2-3 weeks) 2. Manually enter your financial information by selecting the "Provide tax information manually" option when you edit your FAFSA 3. Contact Federal Student Aid directly to report the issue and have them manually review your application I'd recommend option 2 if you're concerned about timing with college deadlines. Just make sure you have your 2023 tax return handy.

•Thank you for explaining! I didn't realize we could go back and manually enter the info. I think that's what we'll do - I don't trust the system to fix itself at this point.

I work in a financial aid office and we're seeing this CONSTANTLY this application cycle. The IRS DRT is failing silently for about 30% of applicants right now. The biggest issue is that the FAFSA system doesn't clearly tell you what's wrong! When you go to edit your FAFSA, you'll need to: 1. Navigate to the financial information section 2. Select the option to provide information manually 3. Enter your AGI, taxes paid, and any untaxed income information from your 2023 tax return 4. Make sure to update your household size too, as that often gets wiped out After resubmitting, your SAI should be calculated within 3-5 business days. Be sure to contact each college's financial aid office to let them know you've updated your FAFSA with the missing information.

•This is incredibly helpful - thank you! Should I call each school after resubmitting or will they automatically get the updated info?

•They'll automatically receive the updated FAFSA, but I still recommend emailing each financial aid office to let them know you've corrected the issue. This helps them prioritize re-processing your application, especially if deadlines are approaching. Just a quick email that says "I identified and fixed the missing IRS data issue on my son's FAFSA on [date]" will do.

After dealing with this EXACT issue for both my kids, I spent 4 hours trying to get through to someone at Federal Student Aid. Kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold forever. Finally tried Claimyr.com and was able to speak with an FSA agent in 15 minutes who confirmed it was an IRS DRT failure. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent couldn't fix it on their end but confirmed I needed to manually enter all the tax information and family size data. After I did that and resubmitted, it processed correctly in about 4 days. Hope this helps!

•did they charge you for this? seems like we shouldnt have to pay just to talk to fafsa ppl

•They do charge a fee, but honestly after wasting hours trying to get through myself, it was worth it just to confirm what the actual problem was. The agent explained exactly which sections were affected by the DRT failure so I knew exactly what to fix.

Have you checked if you might have accidentally entered information that conflicted with your tax data? Things like reporting retirement contributions in multiple places or entering income twice can trigger this error. Also, did you happen to use any tax software like TurboTax or H&R Block? Some people have reported issues with the IRS DRT specifically when they used certain tax preparation software.

•We used TurboTax actually! I wonder if that's related to the problem. We definitely didn't enter any information twice that I'm aware of. The weird part is we can't even SEE what financial info did or didn't transfer.

•Yes, there appears to be a specific issue with TurboTax users this year! Something about how their data is formatted when submitted to the IRS is causing compatibility issues with the FAFSA's DRT system. Unfortunately manual entry is your best bet right now.

•Glad my frustration helped someone else! Definitely check your financial sections - that seems to be where the problem is for most people.

I'm just waiting for the old FAFSA to come back. This new system is ridiculous and I've had it with all these technical issues. My daughter might miss out on thousands in aid because their stupid system can't handle basic tax information. How are families supposed to plan when the most basic functionality doesn't work?!!

•I feel your frustration! The old system wasn't perfect, but at least it reliably pulled tax information. This new one has been a disaster from day one.

Quick update on this issue: The Department of Education just announced they're aware of this IRS Data Retrieval Tool problem and are working on a fix. They're estimating it will be resolved in the next system update on June 14th. However, if you have pressing deadlines, I still recommend manually entering your information rather than waiting.

•Thank you for the update! We're not waiting - already started the manual entry process last night. Honestly at this point I don't trust any of their system updates to actually fix problems without creating new ones.
