FAFSA not pulling IRS tax data this year - parent income section completely missing

I'm seriously confused with the 2025-26 FAFSA. Last year when I filled it out for my son, it automatically asked to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to pull my tax information. This year NOTHING about my income as a parent was asked! No option to link to IRS, no questions about my AGI, nothing. The application completed without asking for ANY parent financial data. My son is definitely a dependent (19, lives at home, I claim him on taxes). The confirmation page shows we submitted, but I know this can't be right. It's telling me I can't make corrections yet. Is anyone else experiencing this glitch? Did they completely change the parent income section? I'm worried his aid will be delayed if I don't fix this soon.

YES! Having the same exact problem. The new FAFSA is missing the entire parent financial section for me too. I tried calling Federal Student Aid three times and kept getting disconnected. I'm freaking out because my daughter's college is asking for her SAI score by next month.

So frustrating! Have you found any workarounds? I'm wondering if we should just wait until the correction period opens or if there's something else we can try now.

This is actually a known issue with the new FAFSA system. The Department of Education acknowledged there's a glitch affecting about 20% of applications where the parent contribution section is completely skipped. When this happens, the system is essentially treating your student as independent (which they're not). You have two options: 1. Wait until correction period opens (usually 3-5 business days after submission) 2. Call FSA directly at 1-800-433-3243 to report the issue and have them flag your application for manual review

Thank you for confirming this! I've been going CRAZY thinking I did something wrong. Do you know how long the manual review takes? My daughter's priority deadline is coming up fast.

Thank you, that's slightly reassuring! Did she have any issues with her SAI calculation being delayed? That's my main concern.

I had this EXACT problem last week! The system completely skipped the contributor section where my income should have been entered. After trying to call for THREE DAYS straight and never getting through, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a FAFSA agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent confirmed it's a system error and manually flagged my application for review. They're seeing this issue a lot with the new FAFSA. Save yourself hours of frustration and busy signals!

I used that service too when I had verification issues. Much better than the hours I spent trying to get through on my own. The agent told me they're working on a patch for this specific parent income issue, but it might not be deployed for several weeks.

havent had this exact problem but the new fafsa is a COMPLETE DISASTER!!!! my daughter's app got stuck in processing for 6 weeks with no explanation and her school's deadline passed. now shes getting less aid because of the "system issues" that are "no ones fault" 🙄🙄🙄

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did your daughter's school make any accommodations since it was a FAFSA system issue? I'm going to email my son's financial aid office tomorrow to give them a heads-up.

Some additional technical context on this issue: The problem appears specifically related to the new "contributor" model that replaced the old parent/student sections. If you have multiple contributors listed (like two parents), the system sometimes fails to load the financial questions for either of them. When your application does open for corrections, you'll specifically need to: 1. Go to the "Contributors" section 2. Verify all contributors are properly linked 3. Complete the financial information for each contributor 4. Re-submit the application This will trigger a new SAI calculation that includes parent income data.

Thank you for the detailed instructions! That makes sense about the contributor model being the source of the problem. I'll follow these steps exactly when corrections open up.

When I filled out my twins FAFSA they asked for my taxes but then had this weird thing where I had to create a "contributor" account separate from my parent account?? I don't remember having to do that last year for my older son. Maybe that's related to your issue? The whole system feels completely different this year.

Yes, that's exactly related! The new FAFSA now uses a "contributor" system instead of the old parent/student model. Each person who contributes financially needs their own FSA ID and contributor profile. The bug happens when these contributor accounts aren't properly linked to the student's application.

Update: I finally got through to someone at FSA after using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above. The agent confirmed it's a known glitch and said they're working on it. He manually flagged my application for review and said I should be able to make corrections within 72 hours. I'll update again when I can actually fix it!

Financial aid counselor here. We're seeing this issue frequently with the new FAFSA. Some important things to know: 1. This is a recognized system error (not user error) 2. Applications affected will show a SAI calculation that doesn't include parent income 3. These incorrect SAI figures ARE being sent to schools 4. You should contact EVERY school your student applied to and alert them to the issue 5. Most schools are creating internal processes to flag affected students 6. When you make corrections, it will generate a new SAI calculation The Department of Education is working on identifying affected applications, but you should be proactive about contacting schools.

Thank you SO much for this insider perspective! I'll definitely contact all the schools my son applied to. Do you know if schools will automatically reconsider aid packages once the corrected SAI comes through?

To answer your question - yes, most schools will automatically reconsider aid packages once they receive the corrected SAI. However, it's still good practice to follow up with each financial aid office after you've submitted corrections to make sure they're aware of the update. Also worth noting: Department of Education announced yesterday they'll be running a batch process to identify all applications missing contributor data and will be contacting affected students directly. But their timeline for this is "within the next 30 days" which may be too late for many priority deadlines.

Thank you again for such helpful information! I'm going to document everything and keep detailed records of all my communications with both FSA and the schools. Really appreciate your expertise!

Final update! Was able to make corrections today (took 4 days from submission). The contributor section now shows up correctly and I could enter all my financial info. New SAI calculation is processing. What a relief!

That's great news! Mine just opened for corrections too. Going to fix it right now. Thanks everyone for all the help with this!

I'm dealing with this exact same issue! Just submitted my daughter's FAFSA yesterday and realized afterward that it never asked for any of my financial information as a parent. No IRS data retrieval, no income questions, nothing. The whole parent contributor section seems to have vanished. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both reassuring (it's not just me!) and terrifying (this could delay her aid). I'm going to try that Claimyr service mentioned above since calling FSA directly seems impossible. Will also reach out to her college's financial aid office proactively to let them know about the glitch. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - at least now I know what steps to take!

Welcome to the club unfortunately! 😅 You're definitely not alone - this seems to be affecting a lot of families this year. The good news is that from what others have shared, the corrections usually open up within 3-5 days and you can fix it then. I'd definitely recommend being proactive like you mentioned - contact the schools and maybe try that Claimyr service if you can't get through to FSA directly. It's frustrating but at least there are workarounds! Keep us posted on how it goes for you.
