Parent section stuck in 'draft' mode when adding spouse info in FAFSA - system error keeps blocking me
I'm about to throw my laptop out the window! I've been trying to complete my FAFSA for THREE DAYS and keep hitting the same wall. When I get to the section where I need to add my parent's spouse info, the system shows my parent section is in 'draft' mode and won't let me proceed. I get this stupid 'Unable to Complete This Action' error message telling me to exit and try again - which I've done like 20 times! I've called and talked to 5 different people at FSA and gotten 5 completely different suggestions. One said to wait 24 hours (did that, didn't work), another said to clear cache (did that too), another said it was a known system bug with no timeline for fixing it. I'm getting desperate because my school's priority deadline is coming up in 2 weeks! Has anyone encountered this parent spouse invitation error before? Any actual solutions? I'm worried my SAI calculation will be completely wrong if I can't get this fixed.

•Did you ever figure out how to fix it? I'm getting seriously worried about missing my priority deadline.

•yea actually! it was weird - i had to go back to the contributor section and manually save EACH page again (even though i'd already completed them), then log completely out, wait about an hour, log back in, and then it finally let me add the spouse info. no idea why that worked but it did!

This is actually a known issue with the new StudentAid.gov system when there's a non-SSN parent spouse situation. The system can't properly validate the contributor information. The most reliable workaround is to: 1. Return to the contributor section 2. Manually save each page using the 'Save' button (not 'Continue') 3. Log out completely 4. Wait at least 30 minutes (system needs time to process) 5. Log back in and try again If that doesn't work, there's an alternative approach where you complete the form without adding the spouse, then submit a correction after submission. That's not ideal for SAI calculation accuracy, but it beats missing your deadline. Did any of the FSA representatives mention the SSN validation issue specifically?

•Thanks for this detailed explanation! Only one person vaguely mentioned something about an SSN issue but didn't give me any specific steps to fix it. I'm going to try your method right now - will report back if it works!

lol thats the FAFSA system for ya. always some glitch or another. last year my brothers application got stuck for weeks because of some random verification thing and he nearly lost his pell grant. these systems never work right

•This is actually a specific issue related to the 2024-25 FAFSA's new methodology for handling non-SSN contributors under the FAFSA Simplification Act. It's not just a random glitch - it's a documented limitation in how the system validates contributor relationships. The FSA is aware of it but hasn't prioritized fixing it since it affects a relatively small subset of applicants.

I HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM AND IT WAS DRIVING ME INSANE!!!!! I spent literally HOURS trying to fix it and got nowhere with the regular support channels. Finally got desperate and tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual FAFSA agent who could help - they have this service where they wait on hold for you and then call when an agent is ready. The agent was able to manually override something on their end to fix the draft mode issue. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Not gonna lie, I was skeptical at first but after three days of getting nowhere, it was totally worth it to actually speak to someone who knew what they were doing!

•Thank you! I'll try the manual save method first, but if that doesn't work, I'm definitely going to try Claimyr. At this point I just need to talk to someone who actually knows how to fix this instead of getting generic troubleshooting advice.

Have you tried using a completely different browser? Sometimes the FAFSA site has weird compatibility issues. I had problems with Chrome but when I switched to Firefox everything worked fine. Also, make sure you're not using any browser extensions that might be interfering with the site functionality.

•I've tried Chrome, Safari, and Edge with the same result every time. I even tried on my phone thinking maybe that would work differently, but no luck there either. It seems like the issue is on their end, not mine.

hi there, just wanted to share that i work at a financial aid office and we've been seeing this issue a LOT with the new fafsa. basically the system doesn't always properly validate parent relationships when there's a spouse situation. the manual save method mentioned above sometimes works. if it doesn't, you can actually call and request them to remove the current parent contributor completely, then add them back fresh which often resolves it. might be worth trying if nothing else works!

•That's really helpful information! I just tried the manual save method and I'm waiting my 30 minutes before logging back in. If that doesn't work, I'll try to get them to remove and re-add the parent contributor. I'm glad to hear this is a known issue at financial aid offices - makes me feel less crazy!

UPDATE: The manual save method worked!!! I went back through each parent contributor page, manually hit save (not continue) on each one, logged out, waited about 45 minutes, and when I logged back in I was able to add the spouse info without the error message! Thank you all SO MUCH for your help. This was driving me completely insane for days.

•Great to hear it worked! Make sure to verify your SAI calculation looks correct after adding all the spouse information. Sometimes these glitches can affect how the system processes the data. And as a future tip - always take screenshots of error messages when dealing with FAFSA issues; they can be very helpful if you need to document problems for your school's financial aid office.
