New FAFSA form not recognizing my dependent - stuck with 'No' greyed out
I'm ready to throw my laptop out the window with this 2025-2026 FAFSA form! I've tried EVERYTHING to get the system to recognize my daughter as my dependent, but the 'Dependents' field stays greyed out showing 'No' on the review page. Last year's form clearly asked if I had dependents and recorded my 'Yes' answer correctly. This year it's not even giving me the option to indicate my dependent status! I even tried to troubleshoot by deleting my application and starting over. When filling out the family size section (which apparently isn't directly connected to the dependent section), I noticed another weird issue - if you select 'No' to changes in family size, it doesn't display any number during review. So I had to select 'Yes' (even though nothing has changed) just to list my child in the form. But even THAT didn't fix the dependent status issue - it still shows 'No' and I can't edit it. Has anyone figured out how to fix this? I'm worried it's going to severely impact my SAI calculation since having a dependent should significantly affect my aid eligibility. I've spent hours on this and the FAFSA phone line is completely useless - I can't even get through to a human being.

This is a MAJOR issue in the new FAFSA that's been driving people crazy. The system is supposed to automatically detect dependent status based on your family size and household information. When you listed your daughter in the household section, did you specifically identify her relationship to you as 'child'? That's the trigger that should change the dependent indicator. Also, make sure you've completed the 'Support' questions correctly. There should be questions asking if you provide more than 50% support for any household members. Answering yes there should activate the dependent flag. If you've done all that and it still shows 'No', you might need to contact FSA directly to fix it - but good luck with that given their current wait times.

•Thanks for the response! Yes, I definitely selected 'child' as the relationship. And I answered the support question with 'Yes' indicating I provide more than 50% support. Still shows 'No' on that review page. It's like the system is just ignoring that data when calculating dependents. So frustrating!

OMG same problem here!!!! I've been fighting with this stupid form for DAYS trying to get it to recognize my two kids as dependents. The FAFSA website keeps crashing too which makes everything 1000x worse. My brothers financial aid advisor told him this is causing HUGE problems for parents all over the country. Apparently the dependent status directly effects your SAI calculation by like thousands of dollars so this isnt a minor glitch!!!!

•That's exactly what I'm worried about! My SAI could be calculated completely wrong, and then I'd have to go through the whole correction process later. Have you found any workaround yet?

I'm a financial aid counselor, and this is unfortunately a widespread issue with the redesigned FAFSA. The dependency section is supposed to automatically update based on other information you provide, but there's clearly a bug in the system. Here's what we're telling our students: 1. Complete and submit the FAFSA even with this error 2. Take screenshots of all relevant sections showing your child's information 3. Immediately after submitting, use the correction feature to attempt to update the dependent status 4. If the correction feature doesn't work, contact your school's financial aid office with your documentation Schools have been given some guidance on how to handle these system errors during processing. The important thing is to get your application submitted, then work on fixing the errors. Just make sure you document everything thoroughly.

•Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll take screenshots of everything and submit it anyway. Should I also try to make a note in the comments section about this issue when submitting?

when i did mine i had to go all the way back to the household section and make sure i selected that i support my kid more than 50%. then i had to go through each section again (super annoying) but then it finally updated on the review page. doesnt make any sense how they organized this form!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! I'll try that approach - going all the way back and re-doing the household section completely. Worth a shot at this point.

After battling this same issue for days, I finally got through to a FAFSA agent by using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have this service that basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of hold time. The agent confirmed this is a known system bug they're working to fix. They told me to submit anyway and then file a correction. They said schools are being notified about this issue so they can adjust during review. You can see their video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ to see how it works. Honestly wish I'd known about this service weeks ago instead of burning up my cell minutes on hold.

•Did the agent actually help you fix the problem though? Or did they just confirm it was a bug? I'm not paying for a service just to be told there's nothing that can be done lol.

•They gave me an official case number and documented the issue on my account. They also walked me through exactly what to do with the correction feature after submission and what documentation to prepare for my school's financial aid office. Way more helpful than the generic advice online!

I was having the EXACT SAME ISSUE with my son's FAFSA application (I'm helping him complete it as a parent contributor). What FINALLY worked for us - and this is bizarre - was completing the form using the FAFSA mobile app instead of the website. For some reason, the app properly recognized my dependents when the website wouldn't. The whole redesign is a disaster. I've been filing FAFSA forms for years (have older kids too) and this is by far the worst implementation I've seen. The old form was straightforward - it just ASKED if you had dependents and you said yes or no!

•I didn't even think to try the mobile app! That's a great suggestion. I'll download it now and see if that works better. Thank you!

Has anyone noticed that even when you fix this dependents issue the SAI calculation still seems wrong? My friend and I have almost identical financial situations (both single parents with one kid) and she got an SAI about $3000 lower than mine even though I actually make less money! I think the whole system is just broken. They should just go back to the old EFC system witch wasn't perfect but at least it WORKED!!

•The SAI calculation is quite different from the old EFC formula. It considers different factors and weighs them differently. The biggest changes affect: 1) How retirement contributions are counted, 2) How multiple students in college are factored, and 3) How certain types of income are protected. It's possible your situations aren't as identical as they seem when viewed through the new formula. If you believe there's an actual calculation error, your school's financial aid office can review your SAI determination in detail.

UPDATE: I tried the mobile app suggestion and IT WORKED! The app let me clearly indicate my dependent status, and when I logged back into the website, the review page now correctly shows 'Yes' under dependents. I have no idea why the website and app would behave differently, but I'm just relieved to have it fixed. I'm going to finish and submit now, but will definitely take screenshots of everything just in case. Thanks everyone for your help with this frustrating situation!

•So glad it worked for you too! It makes absolutely no sense that this would be the solution, but hey, whatever gets the job done. Make sure you download your confirmation page after submitting too - that's another important document to keep!

This is such a relief to see that the mobile app solution worked for you! I'm a new parent going through the FAFSA process for the first time and this thread has been incredibly helpful. I was starting to panic thinking I'd mess up my daughter's financial aid chances because of this glitch. It's really concerning that there's such a significant difference between the website and mobile app functionality - you'd think they'd be synchronized! I'm definitely going to start with the mobile app based on everyone's experiences here. For other newcomers like me who might be reading this: it sounds like the key takeaways are 1) try the mobile app first, 2) document everything with screenshots, 3) submit even if there are errors and then use corrections, and 4) contact your school's financial aid office if problems persist. Thanks to everyone who shared their troubleshooting steps!

•Welcome to the FAFSA nightmare club! 😅 As someone who just went through this exact same issue, I can definitely confirm that the mobile app route is worth trying first. I wasted so much time on the website when the app solved it in minutes. One thing I'd add to your great summary - when you're documenting everything with screenshots, make sure to get shots of both the household section where you list your dependents AND the review page that shows the dependent status. Having both really helped when I had to explain the discrepancy to my school's financial aid office. Also, don't feel bad about being new to this - even parents who've done FAFSA multiple times are struggling with this redesigned version. The learning curve is steep for everyone this year!

As someone who just discovered this community while desperately searching for FAFSA help, I can't thank you all enough for sharing these solutions! I've been stuck on this exact same dependent recognition issue for my twin daughters' applications. Reading through this thread has been like finding a goldmine of practical advice. I'm definitely going to try the mobile app approach first based on everyone's success stories. It's honestly ridiculous that a government form would work differently on mobile vs desktop - makes you wonder what other bugs are lurking in this system. One question for those who successfully used the mobile app: did you complete the entire application on mobile, or just the problematic sections? I'm wondering if I should start fresh on the app or try to fix my existing applications there. Also wanted to mention that this thread should probably be pinned or something - I bet this issue is going to keep coming up for months as more families work through their FAFSA applications!

•Welcome to the community! I'm new here too and have been following this thread closely since I'm also dealing with FAFSA issues. From what I've gathered reading everyone's experiences, it seems like most people who had success with the mobile app completed the entire application fresh on mobile rather than trying to edit existing applications. @4d137c0c837a mentioned they tried the app after struggling with the website, and @4872b70225b9 specifically said they completed their son's form using the mobile app from start to finish. It sounds like the app and website might not sync properly when you're switching between them mid-application. For twin applications, you might want to do both completely on mobile to be safe - that way you'll have consistent behavior across both forms. And I totally agree this thread should be pinned! The collective troubleshooting wisdom here is invaluable for all of us navigating this broken system. Good luck with your daughters' applications - hopefully the mobile app works as well for you as it did for others here!

As a newcomer to this community who just stumbled across this thread while battling the exact same FAFSA dependent issue, I wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone for sharing your solutions and experiences! I've been pulling my hair out for the past week trying to get the system to recognize my son as my dependent. Like @4d137c0c837a, I kept seeing that frustrating greyed-out "No" on the review page despite clearly indicating I have a dependent child in the household section. Based on all the advice here, I'm going to try the mobile app approach that worked for several of you. It's absolutely mind-boggling that a federal form would have such different functionality between the website and mobile app - this feels like something that should have been caught in basic testing! I'm also taking everyone's advice about documenting everything with screenshots before submitting. The tip from @fd25f15df928 about submitting even with errors and then using corrections is really helpful too - I was worried about submitting an incorrect form, but it sounds like that might actually be the best path forward given all these system bugs. This redesigned FAFSA has been such a nightmare compared to what I expected. At least knowing I'm not alone in this struggle makes it slightly less frustrating!

•Welcome to the community and the FAFSA struggle bus! 😅 You're definitely not alone - this thread has been such a lifesaver for so many of us dealing with this exact issue. I just wanted to add one more tip based on my experience: when you try the mobile app approach, make sure you're logged out of the FAFSA website completely before starting on mobile. I had some weird session conflicts when I tried to switch between them while logged into both. Also, the mobile app seems to work better on WiFi than cellular data - not sure why, but several people in my local parent group mentioned that. @fd25f15df928's advice about submitting even with errors is spot on. I was terrified to submit an "incorrect" form too, but my school's financial aid office told me they're seeing this issue constantly and they know how to work with it during processing. The key is having all that documentation ready like everyone mentioned. Hope the mobile app works for you like it did for @4d137c0c837a and @4872b70225b9! Keep us posted on how it goes - this thread has become like our support group for surviving the new FAFSA! 😊

This thread has been a lifesaver! I'm a first-time FAFSA filer (my oldest just started college applications) and I was completely panicking when I hit this exact same dependent recognition issue. The system kept showing "No" for dependents even though I clearly have two kids I support. Reading through everyone's troubleshooting experiences gave me hope that this wasn't just user error on my part. I tried the mobile app solution that @4d137c0c837a and @4872b70225b9 recommended, and it worked like a charm! Completed the whole application fresh on the mobile app and it properly recognized both of my dependents. It's honestly shocking that such a critical federal form would have these kinds of basic functionality differences between platforms. Makes you wonder what other issues are lurking in this system that we haven't discovered yet. For anyone else finding this thread: definitely try the mobile app first, take screenshots of EVERYTHING, and don't be afraid to submit even if something seems off - you can always make corrections later. The collective wisdom in this community has been invaluable for navigating this broken system!

•Welcome to the community and congratulations on getting it working! It's such a relief when that mobile app solution actually works, isn't it? I'm also a first-time FAFSA parent and this whole process has been way more stressful than I expected. Your point about wondering what other bugs are hiding in this system is so valid - if something this basic (recognizing dependents!) has such major issues, it really makes you question the entire redesign. I've been taking screenshots of literally every screen now just in case something else goes wrong down the line. Thanks for sharing your success story - it gives hope to other parents who might find this thread in the future. The mobile app workaround seems to be the most reliable solution we've found so far. Definitely agree that this community's collective troubleshooting has been invaluable for navigating these system failures!

•Welcome to the community, Rosie! Your frustration is so understandable - that greyed-out "No" issue seems to be hitting so many families this year. I'm also relatively new here and have been following this thread closely as I navigate my first FAFSA experience. The mobile app solution really does seem to be the most consistent fix based on everyone's experiences. @4d137c0c837a's update about it actually working was such a relief to read! I'd definitely recommend starting completely fresh on the mobile app rather than trying to edit an existing application - that seems to work better based on what others have shared. One thing I've learned from this thread is to be super methodical about the documentation. I'm taking screenshots of literally every step now, especially the household section where you list dependents and the final review page. Having that paper trail seems really important if you need to work with your school's financial aid office later. It's honestly reassuring to know we're all struggling with the same issues - makes me feel less like I'm doing something fundamentally wrong! This community has been such a lifesaver for navigating these system bugs. Hope the mobile app works as well for you as it has for others here!

•Welcome to the community, Douglas! You're definitely not crazy - this dependent recognition issue has been driving so many of us up the wall. I just joined this community myself while dealing with the exact same problem for my daughter's FAFSA. The mobile app solution really seems to be the most reliable workaround based on everyone's success stories here. I'd recommend logging out of the website completely before trying the mobile app, and doing the entire application fresh rather than trying to edit an existing one. That approach seems to work best from what I've read. Also, definitely take @fd25f15df928's advice about documenting everything and not being afraid to submit even with errors. Just joining this community as another parent completely frustrated with this FAFSA dependent issue! I've been stuck for over a week with that same greyed-out "No" problem despite clearly listing my two kids in the household section. The collective troubleshooting wisdom here is incredible - from the mobile app workaround to the documentation tips to @fd25f15df928's professional insight about schools being aware of these issues. It's honestly appalling that a federal form this critical would have such basic functionality problems, but I'm grateful to have found this community where people are actually sharing real solutions instead of just complaining. Going to try the mobile app approach tomorrow and will report back with my results. Thanks to everyone for making this nightmare a little more manageable!

•Welcome to the community, Malik! Your experience mirrors exactly what so many of us have been going through - that greyed-out "No" issue is like the bane of every parent's existence this FAFSA season! I'm also pretty new here but have been following this thread religiously since I hit the same wall. What's been amazing is how this community has turned into a real lifeline for practical solutions. The mobile app fix that @4d137c0c837a discovered and @4872b70225b9 confirmed really seems to be our best bet at this point. One thing I'd add to all the great advice already shared - make sure you're on a stable WiFi connection when you try the mobile app approach. A few people mentioned that cellular data seemed less reliable for some reason. Also, definitely start completely fresh rather than trying to edit existing applications - the consensus seems to be that the platforms don't sync well mid-process. Looking forward to hearing how it goes for you! This thread has become like our survival guide for the FAFSA redesign disasters. We're all in this together! 🤝
