FAFSA website down today? Can't access my 2025-2026 application
Is anyone else having issues with the FAFSA website right now? I've been trying to finish my 2025-2026 application for the past 2 hours and keep getting an error page that says 'System Currently Unavailable'. I tried different browsers, cleared my cache, even used my roommate's laptop - still nothing! Of course this happens the day before my priority deadline at State University. Anyone know if there's a scheduled maintenance or when it might be back up? I need to submit this ASAP!

Yeah the FAFSA site is completely down for me too. Been trying since this morning to check my SAI calculation. The FSA social media accounts don't mention any planned maintenance either. Usually they post about scheduled downtime at least a day ahead.

•Ughhh this is the worst possible timing! Any idea how long these outages usually last? My college's priority deadline is literally tomorrow and I NEED that institutional aid!

•Thanks for confirming it's not just me. Are you also trying to meet a deadline? I'm freaking out here.

The site crashes ALL THE TIME during peak application season! It's RIDICULOUS that the government can't maintain a stable website for something this important. Every single year the same issues. How are students supposed to get financial aid when they can't even access the application?! And don't get me started on their "customer service" phone line that disconnects you after an hour on hold.

•Honestly tho. Last year I missed my school's priority deadline because the site crashed the night before. Ended up costing me like $3000 in potential grants.

This happens fairly regularly during high-volume periods. The FAFSA site typically experiences outages during application deadlines when many students are trying to access it simultaneously. A few things to keep in mind: 1. Most schools will accept proof that you attempted to submit before the deadline if the system was down. 2. Take screenshots of the error messages you're receiving as documentation. 3. Email your financial aid office immediately to notify them of the issue. 4. The system usually comes back online within 4-6 hours, though occasionally it can last longer. The Department of Education rarely announces these unplanned outages until after they've been resolved. Keep trying periodically, but don't stress too much about the deadline - schools are well aware of these system issues.

•Thank you so much for this info! I just emailed my financial aid office with screenshots. Really hoping it comes back soon, but it's good to know schools might be understanding about the deadline.

This happened when I was trying to submit my FAFSA last week! The site was completely down for about 5 hours and then worked fine after. I was calling the Federal Student Aid number over and over but couldn't get through to anyone. Finally I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual FSA agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed it was a system-wide issue and told me exactly when it would be back up. Saved me a ton of stress - they have a video demo if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

•Oh wow, thanks for sharing this! I've been calling the FSA number and getting nowhere. I'll check out that service if the site isn't back up in the next hour. Did they tell you why the system went down?

•does that actually work? feels sketchy to use a third party just to talk to fafsa ppl

•@original poster - The agent told me it was just server overload due to high volume. Nothing major, just too many people trying to submit at once. @skeptical person - I was hesitant too but it literally just connects your call - you still talk directly to the official FSA people. Was worth it to me instead of calling 50 times and waiting on hold for nothing.

My daughter's trying to finish her FAFSA too and we can't get in either. But don't worry too much about your deadline - when I called my son's college last year about a similar situation, they said as long as you try to submit within 72 hours of the site coming back online, they'll still consider your application as meeting the priority deadline. Most schools understand these technical issues are beyond your control. Just document your attempts with screenshots showing the date/time.

•That's really reassuring to hear, thank you. I'll definitely take plenty of screenshots. Hope your daughter can get her application done soon too!

This is why I always tell students to submit their FAFSA at least a week before any priority deadlines. The system gets overloaded every year during peak times. Glad to hear it's back up now though!

•You're absolutely right. Definitely learned my lesson about waiting until the last minute. Just submitted my application and got my confirmation email. What a relief!
