FAFSA signature page glitch - my student can't sign when others can

I'm going crazy trying to get my daughter's FAFSA submitted! Been trying for 10 days now. Everyone on my Facebook group is posting that they're finally able to make corrections and sign their applications, but when we log in, her application still says 'Student Signature Required' and the button to sign is completely grayed out. I've cleared cache, tried different browsers, even checked on her phone - nothing works! StudentAid.gov shows her application is 'Processing' but then also says it needs her signature? How can it be processing if she can't sign it? Anyone else stuck in this weird signature limbo while everyone else moves forward?

The signature process can be frustrating when it glitches like this. A few things to check: 1) Make sure your daughter is using her own FSA ID to log in, not yours 2) Check if there's a "Submit" button at the top or bottom of the page that's active even if the signature button isn't 3) Look for any warning messages or errors that might explain why the signature option is disabled. If none of that works, try waiting 24-48 hours. Sometimes the system gets backlogged and the status updates are inconsistent.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, she's definitely using her own FSA ID - triple checked that. There's no Submit button active anywhere on the page. We've been waiting for more than a week now with no change! The warning just says "Student signature required" but gives no way to actually provide that signature. It's like being stuck in a loop. :

At least I'm not alone! How long have you been dealing with this? I keep watching everyone else on social media talking about their SAI scores already and we can't even get past this stupid signature page.

about 5 days now. tried logging in at different times thinking maybe the site is just busy but nope. still stuck!

I had this EXACT problem last week! The grayed-out signature button is a known glitch in their system. What worked for me was completely counterintuitive - I had to go back to the Student Demographics section, click "Edit," make NO CHANGES, just click "Save" and then "Continue." This somehow triggered the system to recognize that the application was ready for signature. If that doesn't work, you might be dealing with a verification hold. Check if there's any indication that your application was selected for verification - sometimes they won't let you sign until that's resolved, even though the messaging is terrible and just says "signature required.

Thank you so much for this suggestion! I just tried going back to the Demographics section like you said, made no changes, saved and continued... but unfortunately the signature button is still grayed out. I don't see anything about verification either. This is so frustrating!

Ugh, sorry that didn't work! One more thing - try logging out completely, waiting about 30 minutes, then log back in using an incognito/private browser window. Sometimes the session gets corrupted and this forces a clean restart. If that still doesn't work, you probably need to contact FSA directly.

My son's FAFSA did this too - we couldn't figure it out for days! Turns out the problem was that he had accidentally entered his SSN with a typo when he created his FSA ID months ago, so the system couldn't match his signature to his application. When we called FSA they fixed it in about 5 minutes once we finally got through. The wait times are insane though!

Oh wow, I hadn't even thought about checking her FSA ID details! Did you have to create a new FSA ID or were they able to fix the existing one?

They fixed the existing one. But we spent 3 hours on hold before we got through to someone who could help. The first person we talked to transferred us twice before we got someone who knew what to do.

I work at a college financial aid office, and we're seeing this issue frequently this year. There are a few potential causes: 1. The most common is a mismatch between the FSA ID information and the FAFSA information (like name, DOB, or SSN differences, even minor ones) 2. A technical glitch where the system thinks the parent has signed as the student 3. A server-side issue that requires FSA to fix on their end Unfortunately, in most cases where our students have encountered this, they've had to contact Federal Student Aid directly. The issue usually can't be fixed through the website interface.

Thank you for explaining this! It's helpful to know it's a common issue and not just us doing something wrong. Do you know if there's any way to check for those mismatches ourselves? I've been trying to call FSA for days but can never get through.

I had the same problem trying to get through to FSA about a signature issue. After trying for days and getting disconnected constantly, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through in about 20 minutes instead of the 3+ hours I was waiting before. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The agent was able to fix my daughter's signature issue on the spot - turns out there was a mismatch between her FAFSA and FSA ID that wasn't obvious to us.

Thank you for sharing this! I've never heard of Claimyr before. Did they actually resolve the problem completely? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. My daughter's college priority deadline is coming up fast.

Yes, they fixed it completely! The FSA agent had to override something in their system, and within an hour we got the confirmation email that the FAFSA was successfully submitted. Whatever that signature glitch is, it seems only the FSA agents can fix it. Calling directly just wasn't working for us - I kept getting disconnected after waiting forever.

Has anyone else noticed that the FAFSA system this year is WAY worse than previous years? I've been helping my students complete their FAFSAs for 6 years, and I've NEVER seen so many technical issues. The signature problems, the SAI calculation errors, the contributor section glitches... it's honestly embarrassing how poorly this rollout has gone. And don't even get me started on how they're claiming these problems are fixed when they clearly aren't!!

You're absolutely right. The "simplified" FAFSA has been anything but simple for many families. We've been telling our students and parents to expect delays and technical issues as they work through the system bugs. The Department of Education has acknowledged there are problems, but their timeline for fixes has been repeatedly pushed back.

UPDATE: We finally got this resolved! After trying everything suggested here with no luck, we did end up using Claimyr to reach FSA directly (after 3 days of failed call attempts on our own). The agent confirmed there was a mismatch between my daughter's name on her FSA ID (where she included her middle name) and the FAFSA (where she didn't). They fixed it on their end, and within a few hours, the signature button became active. We've submitted successfully and already received her SAI score! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

That's great news! Thanks for updating us. It's so frustrating that such a small discrepancy can cause such a major roadblock, but I'm glad you got it sorted out before deadlines. What was your daughter's SAI if you don't mind sharing? Just curious how it compares to previous years' EFC calculations.

Her SAI came in at 3276, which is actually better than I expected! Last year's EFC was around 4500. The new formula seems to be working in our favor at least, despite all the technical headaches.
