FAFSA says parent section complete but got email saying it's not - system glitch?

I'm totally confused and starting to panic about my twins' FAFSA applications. Both applications show all sections (including my parent portion) as green/complete/processed. But yesterday I got an email saying I still need to submit the parent portion?? I've triple-checked their studentaid.gov accounts and mine all say everything is submitted and processed. Has anyone experienced this weird contradiction? Is this some kind of system glitch I should ignore, or did I actually miss something critical even though the system shows everything complete? The deadline for priority consideration at their schools is coming up in 2 weeks!

same thing happened to me last week!! the emails are delayed i think. check the actual timestamp on the email - bet it was sent before you completed the parent section. the system is super buggy this year

I just checked and you're right - the email was dated two days BEFORE the parent section shows as completed in the system. That's so confusing! I wish they'd send a confirmation email when things are actually finished instead of these anxiety-inducing reminders that are no longer relevant.

This is actually a common issue this year with the new FAFSA system. There are three things to verify: 1. Make sure you've clicked the actual SUBMIT button at the very end after completing all sections 2. Verify your SAI (Student Aid Index) score is visible on both accounts 3. Check that your sons have both confirmed your contribution info The system often shows sections as "green" even when they haven't been properly submitted. Look specifically for confirmation numbers for each application.

Thanks for these specific things to check. I just logged in again and can see SAI scores for both boys, and I do have confirmation numbers. Does that mean we're definitely good? I'm still nervous about ignoring the email completely.

The new FASFA is such garbage. My daughter's application looked complete for WEEKS but then we found out the college never received it!!! The whole time it showed green checkmarks. You can't trust what the website says AT ALL.

omg this is so scary!! how did you find out the college never got it?? now im freaking out about my son's application...

We only found out because the financial aid office called about something else and happened to mention they were still waiting on her FAFSA. Would have missed out on thousands in aid if they hadn't randomly called! Now I tell everyone to CALL their schools directly to confirm.

I'm a financial aid advisor, and I can tell you that the FSA system is experiencing significant synchronization issues between its email notification system and application status updates. If you have confirmation numbers and can see the SAI scores, your applications are complete. But it's always good practice to: 1. Take screenshots of the completed status pages 2. Save your confirmation numbers in a separate document 3. Contact each school's financial aid office directly to confirm they received the FAFSA data The parent contribution section is particularly problematic this year because of the new contributor role system.

Thank you so much for this expert advice! I'll definitely take screenshots and save the confirmation numbers. Do you recommend calling the schools or is checking their portals enough? Some of them show "FAFSA Received" in their financial aid sections online.

If their portals specifically show "FAFSA Received" with dates that match your submission timeframe, that's generally sufficient. However, for schools where your sons are seriously considering attending or where substantial merit aid is at stake, I'd recommend a quick phone call for peace of mind.

I had the EXACT same problem when filling out FAFSA for my triplets this year! It's so frustrating because my parent section showed complete but then I got emails saying it wasn't finished. I spent FOUR DAYS trying to call Federal Student Aid to figure out what was going on but could never get through - always disconnected or on hold forever. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual FSA agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed my applications were actually complete despite the emails and explained it was a known system issue with the parent contributor section. You can see how it works in their video: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Saved me so much stress since I was able to confirm everything was actually processed correctly!

did u have to give them ur personal info?? i dont trust random websites...

They don't access your FAFSA info at all - they just connect you with the official FSA phone line so you can talk to a real government agent without waiting for hours. I was skeptical too but it worked great. The FSA person I talked to said they're getting flooded with calls about this exact issue.

The email vs. status mismatch sounds frustrating! Here's what's likely happening: FSA is sending automated reminder emails that don't sync properly with the actual application status. If you have: - Green checkmarks on all sections - Visible SAI scores for both students - Actual confirmation numbers Then your applications are fully processed. The parent section completion issue is usually related to the "contributor" role in the new FAFSA. Did you accept a contributor invitation from each son's account separately? Some parents miss that you need to complete the contributor section for EACH student individually, even if they're twins.

Yes, I definitely completed separate contributor sections for each son - I remember being annoyed that I had to enter the same information twice! So it sounds like we're probably OK. I think I'll still follow the advice to call their top choice schools just to be 100% certain everything went through properly.

btw dont feel bad, my nephew had the opposite problem - his app showed INCOMPLETE but the school said they got everything they needed! the whole system is a mess this year

UPDATE: I called both universities and they confirmed they received the complete FAFSA applications for both boys! The financial aid officer I spoke with said they're getting lots of calls from parents with the same issue. She mentioned that the Department of Education is aware of the email notification system problems and they're working on it. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

Excellent! I'm glad you got confirmation directly from the schools. That's always the most reliable verification method. This will be good for your peace of mind, and you've now done your due diligence to ensure your sons will receive their full financial aid consideration.

Smart move calling them directly! Never trust the online system to be accurate.
