FAFSA shows 'processed' but got two correction emails - which is accurate?

I'm totally confused about my daughter's FAFSA status. We submitted her application last week, and since then we've received TWO separate emails (on Tuesday and Thursday) saying there are corrections needed for her application. But when we log into the studentaid.gov website, it clearly shows her application as 'COMPLETED AND PROCESSED' with a green checkmark. There's no indication anywhere on the site about corrections or issues. Which one should we believe? The emails or the website status? I'm worried her colleges won't get the correct information and she'll miss out on aid. Has anyone else experienced this disconnect between emails and the actual FAFSA portal status?

This exact thing happened to me with my son's FAFSA! The website showed processed but we got correction emails. The emails are the accurate one. What's happening is the system generates the 'processed' status when they first review it, but then when they find issues, they send the emails. Unfortunately, they don't always update the online status right away. What did your correction emails specifically say needed fixing?

Thanks for responding! One email said something about income verification and the other mentioned an issue with parent contribution information. But there's literally no indication of this when we log in - no notifications, no messages, nothing highlighted in red. How am I supposed to make these corrections if the system won't show me what's wrong?

You were able to get through to someone?! I've been calling the Federal Student Aid number for three days and keep getting the automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume and to try again later. So frustrating!

I work at a financial aid office, and we're seeing this issue constantly with the 2025-2026 FAFSA. There's a disconnect between the email notification system and the portal status updates. Here's what you should do: 1. Take screenshots of your current "completed and processed" status 2. Check if your SAI (Student Aid Index) number appears on your dashboard - if yes, your application IS processed 3. Look at the exact wording of the correction emails - some are warnings about POTENTIAL issues rather than actual required corrections 4. Check if your colleges have received your FAFSA data (you can call their financial aid offices) In about 60% of cases we're seeing, these emails are false alarms, but you should still verify rather than assume all is well.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I just checked and we do have an SAI number showing (19374). So that means the colleges should be getting the information even with these strange emails, right? I'll call her top choice school tomorrow to confirm they received it.

DONT TRUST THE WEBSITE!!1! My daughter lost a $7000 scholarship because we trusted the "processed" status instead of those correction emails. By the time we figured it out the priority deadline had passed. The whole system is DESIGNED to confuse parents and students.

That's terrible! So sorry that happened to your daughter. The financial aid system can be so frustrating sometimes. Hope she was still able to get some decent aid.

After dealing with this exact issue last month for my twins, I finally got clarity from a Federal Student Aid agent. The system is experiencing synchronization issues between their email notification system and the portal status updates. Here's the definitive answer: - If you have an SAI number showing, your application IS processed - However, if you received correction emails, you DO need to address those issues - The corrections won't show in your portal immediately (can take 3-5 business days) - Colleges WILL see that corrections are needed when they access your data My advice: don't wait for the portal to update. Address the issues mentioned in the emails right away. When I called FSA, they confirmed exactly what corrections were needed even though they weren't showing in the portal.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! Can I ask how you managed to get through to a real person at Federal Student Aid? I've been trying for days with no luck - just the 'high call volume' message and then it hangs up.

After struggling with the exact same problem, I finally used a service called Claimyr to connect with an actual FAFSA agent instead of waiting on hold forever. They were able to explain that the system flags certain applications for review even after initial processing, which is why you get the conflicting messages. You can see how it works at claimyr.com or check their demo: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent I spoke with confirmed which corrections were actually needed (turned out only one of the three "issues" in my emails was legitimate). Saved me hours of stress and confusion!

I've never heard of this service before. Did it actually work to get you through to a real person? At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything because these conflicting messages are making me so anxious about my daughter's financial aid.

Yes, it worked within about 10 minutes for me. The agent was able to see exactly what corrections were needed even though they weren't showing in my portal. Apparently this is a known issue they're dealing with - the system sends correction notices but doesn't always update the portal properly.

my cousin works in financial aid at State University and she says trust the emails not the website. the portal is like 2-3 days behind the actual system. better safe than sorry

Thanks for sharing what your cousin said. It's so strange they would have such a significant lag between systems. I guess I'll try to address the corrections mentioned in the emails even though I can't see them in the portal.

Just to follow up on my earlier comment - the fact that you have an SAI number (19374) is a good sign that your FAFSA has been processed. However, the correction emails indicate there are issues that could affect your final aid determination. College financial aid offices can see both your processed application AND any pending corrections in their system. This doesn't mean your application hasn't been received, but it does flag it for the aid officers. I strongly recommend addressing the corrections mentioned in the emails (income verification and parent contribution) as soon as possible, even if they're not showing in your portal. You can either call FSA directly or submit updated documentation through the portal (look for the "Update FAFSA Form" option which should be available even if no corrections are explicitly shown).

Thank you so much for this follow-up! I found the "Update FAFSA Form" option, but I'm nervous about making changes when I don't know exactly what's wrong. I'll keep trying to reach someone by phone to get specific guidance before potentially making things worse by guessing at the corrections.

just rememberd somthing important - check your spam folder!!! sometimes they send a more detailed correction email that gets filtered. i found mine there with actual instructions after freaking out for days lol

Omg thank you!! I just checked and there WAS another email in spam with more details! It specifically says we need to upload my husband's W-2 for verification and correct a number on the parent asset section. This is so helpful!

That's great you found the detailed instructions! For the W-2 upload, make sure you're using the Document Upload feature specifically (not just attaching to an email). And for the parent asset correction, double-check that you're reporting the value as of the date you initially submitted the FAFSA, not the current value. These are common issues that can create further delays. Once you make these corrections, I recommend taking screenshots of everything you submit. Also, keep checking your spam folder regularly, as additional communications might end up there too.

Thank you for these tips! I'll make sure to use the Document Upload feature and be careful with the asset reporting date. Do you know approximately how long it takes for corrections to be processed? My daughter's priority deadline for her top school is in 3 weeks.

Corrections are typically processed within 3-5 business days, so you should be fine for the deadline in 3 weeks. However, I'd recommend completing everything within the next few days to be safe. Once processed, your corrected FAFSA information will automatically be sent to all the schools you listed on the application.
