FAFSA shows processed with SAI but now got correction notice in mail - contradicting statuses?

So confused right now...my daughter and I finished our 2025-2026 FAFSA about two weeks ago. The website shows it's 'processed' and we even got an SAI number. The weird thing is, it never asked us to manually enter any tax information during the application - I just checked the box to let them pull my 2023 tax data electronically through the IRS DRT. But yesterday my daughter got official mail from Federal Student Aid saying we need to make corrections to our application?? When I log into StudentAid.gov it STILL shows everything as 'processed' with no alerts or messages. Has anyone else experienced this disconnect between the online status and mail notifications? Should we make these corrections even though the system shows processed? I'm worried making changes might reset our place in line for aid consideration.

omg exact same thing happened to me last month!! online said processed but then i got mailed correction forms. super annoying

Did you end up making the corrections? Did it change your online status after you submitted them?

The mail notice should specify exactly what corrections they're asking for. It's actually pretty common to get correction requests even when the system shows processed because the SAI is calculated based on preliminary data. When they do deeper verification, they sometimes find discrepancies that need fixing.

Thanks for explaining. The letter mentions something about income verification but doesn't give specifics. I'll have to dig deeper I guess.

This happens ALL THE TIME with FAFSA. Their systems don't talk to each other properly. The mail notice is sent from the verification department which operates separately from the initial processing system. You absolutely need to complete those corrections or your daughter's financial aid could be delayed or even denied. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool often works fine, but sometimes there are specific fields they need you to manually verify. Check the letter carefully - it should specify exactly which sections need correction.

Thank you! That makes me feel better. The letter does mention income verification specifically. Do you know if I'll need to upload documents or just correct numbers?

It depends on what they're asking for. If it's a verification request (Form V1, V4, or V5), you'll likely need to upload supporting documents like W-2s or tax return transcripts. If it's just a correction notice, you might only need to update specific numbers. The letter should specify which form they're requesting.

FAFSA is such a mess this year with all the changes!! My son's application said processed too then we got an email about corrections but nothing in the mail. When I called FSA they said ignore the email because it was sent in error!! Maybe call and check if yours is actually legit???

How did you manage to get through to someone at FSA? I've been on hold for ages whenever I try to call.

It took me THREE HOURS on hold no joke. Kept getting disconnected too. Super frustrating

I used Claimyr to get through to a FAFSA agent about a similar issue last week. It saved me from endless hold times and actually got me connected to someone who could see both the online status and the correction request. Their website is claimyr.com and they have this video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Beats sitting on hold for hours only to get disconnected!

Thanks for the tip! I might try that because I'm going crazy trying to figure out what's happening with these contradicting statuses.

I used that service too when my daughters SAI calculation seemed wrong. Got through in 20 mins instead of waiting all day. The agent explained that the system shows "processed" even when they need more info which is SUPER confusing

Financial aid administrator here: What you're experiencing is actually normal (though frustrating). The FAFSA system shows "processed" once they've done the initial calculation, but they flag applications for verification after that. About 30% of all applications get selected for verification. Technically, your application IS processed - they've calculated an initial SAI. But that doesn't mean you're done. The verification is a second step where they need to confirm specific information. Don't panic! Just follow the correction instructions in the letter. The most common correction requests involve: 1. Household size verification 2. Number in college verification 3. Income documentation 4. Identity verification Your SAI might change after corrections, or it might stay the same. But you must complete the corrections or your daughter won't receive any aid.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! That makes sense now. The letter specifically mentions income verification, so we'll gather our W-2s and tax documents. Is there a deadline for submitting these corrections?

Yes, typically you have 45 days from the date on the letter to submit corrections, but some schools have earlier priority deadlines. I'd recommend completing it within 2 weeks to avoid delays in your daughter's aid package. The school can't disburse any federal aid until verification is complete.

Oh no, I hope we don't have the same tech issues. Was your final SAI much different from the original one?

our sai went up by like 1200 points which wasn't great but at least we finally got it processed! the whole thing is so stressful

Thank you everyone for your helpful responses! I feel much better knowing this is common. I'll gather our documents and complete the verification process this weekend. I might try Claimyr to get through to FSA first, just to confirm exactly what they need from us. Really appreciate all the insights!

Good plan! One more tip: Make copies of EVERYTHING you submit. Schools and FAFSA are notorious for "losing" documents, and having copies ready can save you weeks of delays if something goes missing.

Just wanted to add that you should also check if your daughter's school has sent any emails about the verification process. Some schools will reach out directly once they receive the FAFSA and see it needs verification. They often have their own deadlines that might be earlier than the federal 45-day window, especially for priority consideration for institutional aid. My daughter's school sent a checklist of exactly what documents they needed which made the whole process much smoother than trying to decipher the federal letter.
