FAFSA flagged for 'reprocessing' by college - what does this even mean?
OMG I'm seriously freaking out right now! My top choice school (UCLA) just emailed saying they received my FAFSA but it's been 'flagged for reprocessing' by Federal Student Aid?? WTF does that even mean?? I submitted everything back in October and my SAI calculation came back normal. I've already been accepted but now I'm worried this will mess up my financial aid package. Has anyone dealt with this 'reprocessing' thing before? Will this delay my aid offer? I can't afford to attend without a solid package and I need to make my decision by May 1st!

•10 DAYS?! I don't have that kind of time... did your financial aid package get delayed because of it?

This is actually fairly common and usually not a cause for alarm. FAFSA reprocessing can happen for several reasons: 1. You made corrections to your FAFSA after initial submission 2. The school's financial aid office requested a correction 3. The Department of Education flagged a data mismatch between your FAFSA and tax records 4. Random selection for verification I'd recommend calling the financial aid office at UCLA first to ask what triggered the reprocessing and if they need any additional documentation from you. They can usually tell you exactly what's happening and if it will delay your aid package.

•Thank you! I did make a correction about two weeks ago when I realized I put my mom's retirement account as an asset when it shouldn't count. Could that be why? I'll try calling UCLA tomorrow.

The whole FAFSA system is DELIBERATELY CONFUSING this year!!! I'm convinced they're trying to discourage people from getting financial aid by making it so complicated. My daughter's FAFSA got "reprocessed" THREE TIMES and each time they changed her SAI and then gave us ZERO explanation. When we called the 1-800 number we sat on hold for TWO HOURS only to be disconnected. The entire system is broken and nobody cares!!!

•I understand your frustration with the system. The new FAFSA rollout has definitely had issues this year. If you're still having problems reaching FSA, have you tried using a callback service? I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) last month when I needed to speak with someone about a similar issue - they held my place in line and called me when an agent was available. Saved me from being on hold forever. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works.

•Thanks for the tip - I've never heard of that service but at this point I'll try ANYTHING. This whole process has been a nightmare from day one. Will check it out!

I work in a financial aid office (not at UCLA). If you made that correction about the retirement account, that's 100% why it's being reprocessed. Any correction triggers reprocessing, but this particular type (changing reportable assets) will definitely do it. Here's what to expect: - Reprocessing usually takes 3-7 business days - Your SAI might change (likely lower since you removed an asset) - UCLA already has systems in place to handle this common scenario You should contact UCLA's financial aid office, but I can almost guarantee they'll tell you that your aid package might be delayed by a few days, but not enough to impact your May 1 decision deadline. They deal with this constantly, especially with the new FAFSA this year.

•This is super helpful, thank you so much! I was really worried this might mean I wouldn't get as much aid or something. I'll definitely call them tomorrow morning to check on the timeline.

My daughter's FAFSA got flagged for reprocessing in February, and we didn't think much of it until we realized it was due to a mismatch between her SSN on the FAFSA and her SSN in another federal database. Apparently she transposed two digits! Double-check all your personal info is correct as well. We had to submit a correction and it took about 2 weeks to fully resolve.

•2 WEEKS!? That would put me dangerously close to the May 1 deadline... I'm pretty sure all my personal info is correct, especially my SSN, but I'll double check everything when I call tomorrow.

Quick update on timeline expectations: reprocessing due to corrections about assets (like your mom's retirement account) typically processes faster than other types of corrections because it doesn't require cross-verification with other federal databases. I'd expect 3-5 business days in your case, based on what you've shared. Also, if you're really concerned about the May 1 deadline, you can ask UCLA's financial aid office if they can provide a preliminary aid estimate while waiting for the official reprocessed FAFSA. Many schools will do this for committed students facing decision deadlines.

•That's so good to know! I'll definitely ask about a preliminary estimate when I call. Thank you for all your help!

Hey Hugo! I just went through this exact same situation with my FAFSA last month. Mine got flagged for reprocessing after I corrected an asset reporting error (similar to your mom's retirement account situation). The whole thing stressed me out so much, but it ended up being totally fine! My reprocessing took exactly 4 business days, and my SAI actually went DOWN a bit because I had over-reported assets initially. The school was super understanding about it and even told me they build buffer time into their aid processing specifically because FAFSA corrections are so common this year. Don't panic about the May 1 deadline - schools are very aware that the new FAFSA system has been glitchy and they're being flexible with aid package timelines. You've got this! 🙂

I'm going through something similar right now with my FAFSA! Mine got flagged for reprocessing about a week ago after I made a correction to my parent's income information. I was totally freaking out at first, but after reading through all these responses, I feel so much better knowing this is actually pretty normal. The timing stress is real though - I'm also waiting on financial aid packages from multiple schools and need to make my decision soon. I called my school's financial aid office yesterday and they were really reassuring about it. They said they see FAFSA reprocessing all the time, especially this year with the new system, and that it rarely causes major delays in aid packages. Hugo, definitely call UCLA first thing tomorrow morning like others suggested. From what everyone's saying, your correction about the retirement account should process pretty quickly. Good luck! 🤞

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone going through the same thing right now. The timing stress is definitely the worst part - like you said, we all need to make our decisions soon and waiting on financial aid packages makes it so much harder. I'm glad your school's financial aid office was understanding about it too. Fingers crossed both our FAFSAs process quickly! 🤞

Hey Hugo! I just wanted to chime in as someone who went through FAFSA reprocessing last year. I know how stressful it feels, especially with deadlines looming, but based on what you've described (correcting the retirement account asset), this should be pretty straightforward. One thing that might help ease your mind - you can actually check the status of your FAFSA processing by logging into your FSA account at studentaid.gov. It will show you if your FAFSA is still "in review" or if it's been processed and sent to your schools. I checked mine obsessively when I was waiting! Also, since you mentioned you've already been accepted to UCLA, you're in a good position. Admitted students typically get priority for financial aid processing, especially when there are timing concerns like yours. When you call them tomorrow, definitely mention your May 1 deadline - they'll likely fast-track your case or at least give you a better timeline. You've got this! The correction you made was the right thing to do (retirement accounts can really mess up your aid calculation if reported incorrectly), and it sounds like everything will work out fine. Keep us posted on how the call goes!

•Thanks Nick! That's really helpful about checking the FSA account - I didn't know you could track the status there. I'll definitely log in and see what it shows. And you're right about mentioning the May 1 deadline when I call UCLA tomorrow. I'm feeling a lot more optimistic after reading everyone's experiences here. It's such a relief to know this isn't some rare, terrible thing that happened to me! I'll post an update after I talk to the financial aid office.

Hugo, I totally get why you're stressed - the FAFSA reprocessing thing sounds scary when you first hear about it! But from everything I've read here and my own experience, it's actually super common this year. I went through something similar when I had to correct my parent's business income information. The good news is that since you corrected an asset reporting issue (the retirement account), that type of correction usually processes faster than income corrections or verification issues. My reprocessing took about 5 days and my aid package actually improved because I had initially reported things incorrectly. One tip: when you call UCLA tomorrow, ask them specifically if they can give you a preliminary aid estimate while waiting for the final reprocessed FAFSA. Most schools can do this, especially for admitted students close to decision deadlines. Also, definitely mention that you're an admitted student with a May 1 deadline - they'll prioritize your case. You did the right thing by correcting the retirement account info. Parent retirement accounts shouldn't count as assets for FAFSA, so this correction will likely help your aid eligibility. Hang in there! 💪

•This is such great advice, Kaitlyn! You're absolutely right about retirement accounts not counting as assets - I actually made the same mistake initially and was worried I had messed something up. It's really reassuring to hear that your aid package actually improved after the correction! I'm definitely going to ask UCLA about a preliminary estimate tomorrow when I call. Thanks for the encouragement - everyone here has been so helpful and it's making me feel so much less anxious about this whole situation. 🙏
