FAFSA reprocessing affecting 30% of applications - will existing financial aid offers change?

I'm seriously freaking out right now. After weeks of stress, my daughter finally got her FAFSA processed and SAI calculated. We've already received financial aid packages from 5 schools (two of them really good ones!), but yesterday I got this alarming email from her top-choice school. They said they can't offer a financial aid package yet because her "FAFSA needs to be reprocessed before they can finalize an offer." When I asked what was going on, they told me that "approximately 30% of all FAFSA applications nationwide must be recalculated and reprocessed due to inaccuracies in the SAI evaluations" and my daughter's was one of them!! I'm panicking because we already have offers from other schools with deposit deadlines coming up. Does this mean the offers we've already received will change? Would they actually reduce aid packages AFTER they've been offered? Has anyone dealt with this 30% reprocessing issue? What should we do about the existing offers?

yeah i got the same email yesterday. super annoying since we already made plans based on the aid we thought we were getting. no idea what to do about deposit deadlines, thats a good question

Have you called any of the schools that already gave you offers to ask if they might change? I'm wondering if I should just put down deposits at the schools with good offers now before anything changes...

This is happening to a lot of applicants this year. The Department of Education identified calculation errors in the new FAFSA formula affecting approximately 30% of applications. They're correcting the SAI calculations, which could result in either higher or lower numbers depending on your specific situation. Regarding your existing offers: schools that already provided packages *may* need to adjust them once the corrected information is available. Federal aid amounts in particular could change if your SAI changes significantly. However, some schools might honor their original offers even with the recalculated SAI. I recommend contacting each school that's already provided an offer to ask: 1. If they're aware your FAFSA is being reprocessed 2. Whether they plan to adjust their offer after reprocessing 3. If they would extend their deposit deadline given the circumstances Document all communications carefully during this process.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. I never realized they could actually change offers they've already made. I'm going to call each school tomorrow. Do you know how long this reprocessing typically takes? We only have about 2 weeks before the first deposit deadline.

Financial aid advisor here. The FAFSA reprocessing situation is frustrating but manageable. The Department of Education discovered an error in how some specific tax situations were being calculated in the new formula, affecting approximately 30% of applications. Regarding your existing offers: - Schools using only the FAFSA (not CSS Profile): These offers may change if your SAI changes significantly after reprocessing - Schools using both FAFSA and CSS Profile: Less likely to see major changes since they have more financial data to work with - Merit scholarships: Generally won't be affected as they're typically based on academic achievements, not financial need What to do now: 1. Contact each school's financial aid office to explain your situation 2. Ask about their policy for deposit deadline extensions under these circumstances 3. Get documentation in writing of any conversations or extensions 4. Prepare for the possibility that federal aid amounts (Pell Grants, subsidized loans) may change Most schools are dealing with hundreds of these cases and will work with you on deadlines.

I work at a financial aid office and can confirm this is accurate. Most schools are extending deposit deadlines by 2-3 weeks for affected students. We're also prioritizing reprocessed FAFSA applications to get revised packages out as quickly as possible. We recognize this isn't students' fault and are trying to be accommodating.

THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION MESSED UP AGAIN!!! This is ridiculous. They already delayed the FAFSA for MONTHS, made the website crash constantly, and now they're telling us the calculations were wrong?? And they expect kids to make college decisions with incorrect information?? I am so done with this broken system. My daughter is affected too and we're just about ready to give up.

I totally understand your frustration. My son's application is part of this reprocessing mess too. Have you had any luck reaching anyone at Federal Student Aid to get more information? I've been calling for days and can't get through to a human being. Just endless hold music and then disconnects.

Quick update on timing: According to the latest Department of Education press release, they're expediting the reprocessing of affected applications and expect to complete most within 7-10 business days. They're prioritizing applications for students with upcoming deposit deadlines. The error primarily affected how retirement contributions were being calculated in the new formula, which impacted approximately 30% of applications. Some SAIs will increase and some will decrease depending on your specific financial situation.

Thank you for this update. We have retirement contributions so that explains why we're affected. Do you know if they're notifying students when reprocessing is complete, or do we need to keep checking the portal?

update: i just got my new SAI today and it went DOWN by $2,800! thats actually good for us, should mean more aid. so maybe the reprocessing won't be bad news for everyone?

lucky you!! mine went UP by $1,450 😭 called the school and they said my pell grant might be reduced... this system is so unfair!!

Financial aid office update: Most schools are handling this reprocessing situation by: 1. Extending May 1st deposit deadlines to May 15th for affected students 2. Prioritizing revised award letters for those students 3. Maintaining original award amounts in many cases, especially if the SAI change is minor 4. Only adjusting federal aid components if legally required I recommend accepting your best current offer but explaining to that school that your FAFSA is being reprocessed. Most institutions are being very understanding this year given all the FAFSA challenges.

This is really helpful information. I just checked our portal and the reprocessing is now complete. Our SAI went down by about $1,200, which seems positive. Should I immediately notify the schools that already gave us offers?

Yes, now that your reprocessing is complete and your SAI decreased, you should: 1. Immediately contact all schools that previously provided aid packages 2. Let them know your SAI has decreased by $1,200 after the Department of Education's reprocessing 3. Ask if they'll recalculate your aid package based on the updated information 4. Request an update on timing for any revised offers With a $1,200 SAI decrease, you might see modest improvements in need-based aid at some schools. This could mean a few hundred dollars more in grants or subsidized loans, depending on each school's awarding policies. Based on conversations with other advisors, most schools are recalculating packages within 48-72 hours for reprocessed FAFSAs at this point. Good luck!

I just got off the phone with three schools. Two said they'll recalculate and get back to us by Friday. The third (her favorite) said they'd honor their original offer regardless of the change and extended our deposit deadline to May 10th! Such a relief. Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice during this stressful situation!
