FAFSA direct deposit setup in student portal not working - need help ASAP
I'm trying to set up direct deposit for my financial aid refunds through my college's student portal under 'My Finances' section, but I keep getting an error message. I entered my bank account info twice and it just says 'Failed to Validate Banking Information'. Has anyone successfully enrolled in direct deposit through their portal? My first FAFSA disbursement is supposed to arrive next week and I really don't want to wait for a paper check. The financial aid office is closed until Monday and I'm stressing out!

I had this same issue last semester! The direct deposit enrollment in the My Finances section can be super picky about formatting. Make sure you're entering your routing number correctly (it's 9 digits) and don't include any dashes or spaces in your account number. Also, some school portals require you to upload a voided check image for verification purposes before they'll accept your banking info. Look for a small upload button somewhere on that page.

•Thanks! I didn't see any upload button, but I'll double check about the dashes. I might have put those in my account number. Do you know how long it takes to process once it accepts the info? My SAI score was way lower than expected so I'm getting a decent refund this term.

sometimes the portal won't let u set up direct deposit until after ur fafsa is fully processed by the school. mine didnt let me do it until i got the official award letter in my student email. check ur school email maybe

•This is the correct answer. Most schools require your FAFSA to be fully processed AND your aid package to be finalized before you can enroll in direct deposit. After your SAI (Student Aid Index) is calculated and your aid is packaged, then the direct deposit option becomes available. Check your To-Do list in the financial aid section to see if there are any outstanding requirements.

Have you tried clearing your cache and using a different browser? The finance portal at my university would ONLY work correctly in Chrome, not Firefox or Safari. Also, make sure you're using the correct account type (checking vs. savings). Some schools won't accept savings accounts for direct deposit of financial aid funds because of federal regulations on Title IV funds.

•THIS!!!! omg the browser thing is so real. my school's portal is the WORST about this. I had to use microsoft edge of all things to get mine to work last semester. try a different browser 100%

If none of the above solutions work, you might need to call your school's Federal Student Aid office directly. I spent THREE DAYS trying to fix my direct deposit setup before finally getting through to a real person who fixed it in literally 2 minutes. It turned out there was a flag on my account because I had changed my bank info recently.

•Good luck getting through to them by phone! I tried calling my school's financial aid office last week and was on hold for over an hour before being disconnected. Ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get a callback instead of waiting on hold. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration when I needed to fix my verification issues.

One other important point: make sure you're in the correct section of the portal. Many schools have multiple places where banking information is stored. There's often a section for payroll direct deposit (if you work on campus) and a separate section for financial aid refunds direct deposit. They don't always share information between systems even within the same portal. Look specifically for "Financial Aid Refund" or "Student Account Refund" in the direct deposit setup.

•Oh! There ARE two different sections - I just found both. I was in the Student Employment section instead of the Financial Aid Refunds section. No wonder it wasn't working. Thank you so much!

my roommate had this EXACT problem and it turned out his bank was blocking the verification attempts from the school!! call your bank and ask if they're blocking any verification attempts from your school. some banks have super strict fraud prevention especially for student accounts

•This is an excellent point that many people miss. Some banks (especially credit unions) have enhanced security measures that block the micro-deposit verification process that many school portals use. If your bank is blocking the small test deposits (usually less than $1) that the school system sends to verify your account, the enrollment will fail every time.
