FAFSA login stuck at 'Confirm Your Information' page with unknown error - deadline approaching

I'm at my wit's end with the studentaid.gov website! My son keeps getting stuck at the 'Confirm Your Information' page since February. When he clicks the box to accept, we just get this frustrating message: 'An unknown error has occurred. Please try again later or close all browser windows or start over.' We've tried EVERYTHING - different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge), clearing cache/cookies, different devices, even resetting his FSA ID password. Nothing works! I submitted a paper FAFSA application 3 weeks ago as a backup, but we can't even check its status because we can't get past this stupid error page. The priority deadline for his dream school is May 1st (less than 2 weeks away!), and I'm terrified he'll lose out on financial aid. The student portal worked perfectly fine last year for his dual enrollment courses. I've spent hours in the automated phone system but never reach a human. Has anyone else dealt with this specific error? Any suggestions that might actually work?

same thing happened 2 my daughter!!! tried for weeks, total nightmare. their website is SO broken this year with all the FAFSA changes. we finally just went to the financial aid office at her school and they helped submit it directly. might be worth a try if the school isn't too far from u

That's actually a really good idea. His school is about an hour away, but at this point I'd drive across the country if it would fix this mess. Did they need you to bring any specific documents with you?

This is a known technical issue affecting many FAFSA applicants this cycle. The new site architecture isn't handling certain account configurations correctly, particularly for returning users who previously completed applications. Here are some technical solutions you can try: 1. Use private browsing/incognito mode with cookies disabled 2. Try accessing the site between 11pm-6am when server traffic is lower 3. Create a completely new FSA ID (as a last resort) 4. Request a manual override by submitting Form FSA-ID109 (technical exception request) Also, don't worry too much about the May 1st deadline - most financial aid offices are being extremely flexible this year given the widespread FAFSA issues. Make sure you document all your attempts to access the system and contact the financial aid office directly to explain the situation.

Thanks for this detailed response! I didn't know about the Form FSA-ID109 option. We'll try the incognito mode tonight and the late-night access. I'll also call his school tomorrow to see if they can make a note about our technical issues. Really appreciate the reassurance about the deadline flexibility!

I had this EXACT issue last month and it was making me CRAZY!! Nothing worked for two weeks straight. I finally got through to an actual human at Federal Student Aid who fixed something on their end. The trick was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to bypass the hold times. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent told me it was an account verification flag that got stuck on my son's profile and they had to manually clear it. After that call, he was able to log in normally and we submitted his FAFSA the same day. Definitely worth trying since you've already done all the technical troubleshooting stuff.

is this service legit? seems sketchy to skip phone lines...

It's legit - just connects you faster to the same FSA agents. My college financial aid advisor actually recommended it because of how impossible it's been to reach anyone this year. The agent I spoke with didn't seem surprised or bothered by how I reached them.

I work in a university financial aid office, and this is unfortunately a widespread issue with the redesigned studentaid.gov portal. A few important points: 1) The paper FAFSA you submitted is absolutely valid and will be processed. Processing times are currently running 4-6 weeks for paper forms compared to 2-3 weeks for electronic submissions. 2) Contact your son's school's financial aid office directly. Many institutions have received special guidance from the Department of Education on how to handle these technical issues. They can often verify receipt of your paper FAFSA through their institutional portal even if you can't see it yet. 3) Most schools are extending their priority deadlines this year due to the widespread FAFSA issues. The May 1st date may no longer be a hard deadline. 4) For the technical issue itself, one solution that has worked for some students is logging in very early in the morning (4-5am) when server load is lowest. Don't panic about the deadline - document your attempts to submit and communicate directly with the financial aid office.

Thank you so much for this insider perspective! It's a huge relief to hear the paper form is being processed. I'll call the financial aid office tomorrow morning. Do you know if I should ask for anyone specific when I call? Would it help to email documentation of our attempts to log in (screenshots of errors, etc.)?

Yes, absolutely send screenshots of the errors you're encountering - document everything. Ask to speak with a financial aid counselor rather than a front desk assistant if possible. They'll have more authority to note your account and potentially grant exceptions. If they offer you an appointment with a counselor, take it even if it's a few days out. Those one-on-one sessions are where problems really get solved.

Have u tried using a completly diffrent device??? My daughter had this EXACT issue and we fixed it by using my work laptop instead of her macbook. Something about cookies or tracking that the stupid website couldnt handle. worth a shot?

We've tried his laptop, my desktop, and both our phones, but not my work computer. I'll definitely try that tomorrow! Did you have to install anything special on the work laptop first, or just go straight to studentaid.gov?

just went straight to the website!!! didnt do anything special. i think it worked because the work computer had never been to that site before so no history/cookies. i hope it works!!!!

The FAFSA system this year is an absolute DISASTER. My daughter and 3 of her friends all had different weird errors. One suggestion nobody's mentioned - try changing your password to something super basic and simple (meeting their requirements but nothing fancy). For some reason, certain special characters in passwords were causing this exact error for some people. Also, the paper FAFSA should be fine, but in our experience it takes 6-8 weeks to process, not the 3-4 they claim. Your son's school 100% knows about these issues and should be accommodating. Don't stress too much about the May 1 deadline. With all the FAFSA delays this year, many schools are being flexible with their aid deadlines. But definitely contact financial aid office directly to explain the situation.

That's an interesting suggestion about the password! My son does use some unusual special characters in his passwords. We'll try resetting it to something simpler. And it's good to hear a realistic timeline on the paper form processing - I'll adjust my expectations. Appreciate the reassurance about the deadline flexibility!

That's great to know! I've been taking screenshots of every error message since this started happening. I'll compile them all to show the school.

These FAFSA problems are getting ridiculous!!! This is why my daughter is going to trade school instead - no dealing with this bureaucratic mess. Good luck getting through to anyone who can actually help...

UPDATE: We finally got it fixed! A combination of solutions worked for us: 1. Called the financial aid office at his school - they were super helpful and said they're extending all deadlines by 30 days because of FAFSA issues 2. Used Claimyr to reach a human at FSA after trying for weeks - the agent found a database mismatch with my son's SSN formatting (had a hyphen in one system but not another) and fixed it on their end 3. Used my work computer with no browser history to log in after the agent fixed the backend issue For anyone dealing with this - document EVERYTHING, contact the school directly, and be persistent about reaching a human at FSA. We can now see our paper FAFSA was received and is processing. Thanks everyone for your help!

This is excellent news! I'm glad you got it resolved. The SSN formatting issue is actually a common problem we're seeing this year - something about the database migration during the FAFSA simplification rollout caused these inconsistencies. Thank you for sharing your solution, as it may help others facing similar issues.

So glad you got this sorted out! Your update gives me hope - I'm dealing with a similar error right now and have been pulling my hair out for weeks. The SSN formatting issue is something I never would have thought of. I'm going to try the Claimyr service tomorrow and also contact my daughter's financial aid office directly. Thanks for taking the time to post the solution that worked - this kind of detailed follow-up is exactly what other stressed parents need to see right now!

You're so welcome! I totally understand the hair-pulling stress - we were at that point too. Definitely try multiple approaches at once like we did. The Claimyr thing was a game-changer for actually reaching someone who could fix the backend issue. And don't underestimate how helpful the school's financial aid office can be - they're dealing with this mess all day every day right now and have workarounds we never would have known about. Fingers crossed you get it resolved quickly!

Wow, this thread is incredibly helpful! I'm dealing with a similar issue right now where my son's FAFSA keeps timing out at the review page. We've been stuck for almost a month and I was starting to panic about missing deadlines. Reading through all these solutions and especially Diego's successful resolution gives me so much hope. I'm definitely going to try the Claimyr service and contact our school's financial aid office directly tomorrow. It's reassuring to know that schools are being flexible with deadlines this year given all these technical problems. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences - this is exactly the kind of real-world advice that actually helps!

I'm so glad this thread helped you! The timeout issue sounds just as frustrating as what we went through. One thing I'd add - when you call the financial aid office, ask them specifically if they can see any FAFSA submissions tied to your son's SSN in their system. Sometimes the form actually goes through partially even when you get error messages on your end. Also, if the Claimyr service gets you through to FSA, be ready with your son's FSA ID, SSN, and birth date - they'll need all of that to look up his account. Wishing you the best of luck getting this resolved quickly!

Just wanted to chime in as another parent who's been through this nightmare! My daughter had the exact same "Confirm Your Information" error for over a month. What finally worked for us was a combination of clearing ALL browser data (not just cookies but everything - saved passwords, autofill data, the works) and then accessing the site using a VPN set to a different state. Sounds crazy but apparently some regional servers were having issues. Also, pro tip - if you do get through to an FSA agent, ask them to put notes on your account about the technical difficulties you've experienced. This creates a paper trail that schools can reference if there are any questions about timing. Diego's success story gives me so much hope for other families dealing with this mess. The FAFSA rollout this year has been an absolute disaster but at least we're all helping each other get through it!

Wow, the VPN trick is brilliant! I never would have thought of regional server issues causing these problems. It makes sense though - with all the traffic and technical problems this year, some servers are probably more overloaded than others. I'm definitely going to try that if we run into any more issues. And yes, asking the FSA agent to add notes to the account is such smart advice - having that documentation could be really important later. It's amazing how many different workarounds people have discovered for what should be a straightforward process. Thanks for adding another potential solution to this growing list!

This entire thread is gold! As a newcomer to this community, I'm amazed by how helpful everyone has been in sharing real solutions. My nephew is starting his college applications next year and reading about these FAFSA issues has me already worried about what we might face. Diego, your detailed update with the step-by-step solution is incredibly valuable - especially the SSN formatting issue discovery. That's the kind of technical detail that could save other families weeks of frustration. And to everyone who mentioned school financial aid offices being flexible with deadlines, that's such important information that I don't think gets shared widely enough. I'm bookmarking this thread for reference next year. It's clear that having multiple backup plans (paper FAFSA, direct school contact, technical workarounds) and thorough documentation is key. Thanks to everyone for creating such a comprehensive resource for families dealing with these technical nightmares!

Welcome to the community, Holly! You're so smart to be thinking ahead about this process. Honestly, after going through this experience, I'd recommend starting early and having multiple backup plans ready from day one. The FAFSA is supposed to open October 1st each year, but given all the issues we've seen, I'd suggest having your nephew's FSA ID created well in advance and keeping both digital and physical copies of all tax documents. Also, establish contact with the financial aid office at his target schools early - they've been lifesavers for so many families this year. Hopefully by the time your nephew applies, they'll have worked out all these technical kinks, but it never hurts to be prepared! This community has been such a blessing during this stressful time.

This is such a comprehensive thread of solutions! As someone who just joined this community because I'm facing similar FAFSA technical issues, I can't tell you how relieved I am to find all these real-world fixes in one place. My daughter has been getting the same "unknown error" message for weeks now, and like Diego, we've tried all the basic troubleshooting steps. Reading through everyone's experiences, I'm planning to try the early morning login approach first (4-5am as Luca suggested), then move on to the Claimyr service if that doesn't work. The SSN formatting issue that Diego discovered is particularly interesting - I'm going to ask about that specifically when I reach an FSA agent. What really stands out to me is how schools are being flexible with deadlines this year. That takes so much pressure off knowing that the May 1st dates aren't set in stone. I'll definitely be calling our target schools tomorrow to document our technical difficulties. Thank you all for sharing not just your problems but your actual solutions - this is exactly the kind of community support that makes such a difference when dealing with government websites that seem determined to make our lives difficult!

Welcome to the community, Liam! It's so frustrating that you're dealing with the same issues, but you've definitely found the right place for help. Your plan sounds solid - I'd definitely recommend trying the early morning approach first since it's the simplest fix to attempt. One thing I'd add based on what we learned: when you do reach an FSA agent (whether through Claimyr or the regular phone line), have all your son's information ready but also ask them to check if there are any "pending validation flags" on the account. That was part of what was causing our issue beyond just the SSN formatting. Also, don't forget to take screenshots of every error message you encounter - several schools mentioned in this thread that they're accepting those as proof of attempted submission. The documentation really does matter for protecting your deadline status. Hope you get it resolved quickly - this community is great for ongoing support if you hit any more roadblocks!

Welcome to the community! As a newcomer who's been lurking and reading through financial aid forums, this thread is absolutely incredible. The level of detailed, practical help here is exactly what panicked parents need right now. I'm not dealing with FAFSA issues myself yet (my daughter is a sophomore), but I wanted to jump in and say how impressed I am with how everyone has shared not just their problems but actual step-by-step solutions. Diego's update with the SSN formatting discovery is the kind of technical insight that could literally save families thousands of dollars in missed aid opportunities. What really strikes me is how this thread demonstrates the importance of community support when dealing with broken government systems. The combination of technical troubleshooting (VPN tricks, browser clearing), service recommendations (Claimyr), institutional knowledge (financial aid office flexibility), and moral support creates such a comprehensive resource. I'm definitely bookmarking this for when we hit the FAFSA process in two years. Based on everything shared here, it sounds like the key strategies are: start early, document everything, have multiple backup plans, and don't hesitate to reach out directly to schools and FSA agents when technical issues arise. Thank you all for creating such a valuable resource for families navigating this unnecessarily complicated process!
