FAFSA asset page glitch deleting data - stuck in endless loop & application rejected
I'm seriously losing my mind trying to complete my son's FAFSA application. We've hit this bizarre glitch where the student assets page won't save ANY information. Each time we enter his checking account balance ($3,420) and small investment account ($5,750), hit save, and move to the college selection page, it immediately boots us back to the assets page with EVERYTHING DELETED. We've been stuck in this loop for 9 days now and can't progress to the signature page to complete the application. His first-choice university already marked his FAFSA as 'rejected' in their portal and the priority deadline is approaching! I've called the university financial aid office twice and they just keep telling me it's a FAFSA system issue and to contact Federal Student Aid. I've spent over 4 hours on the phone with FAFSA (spoke to 5 different agents!) and they all say the exact opposite - that we're 'doing everything correctly' and need to contact the school instead. It's a complete runaround! We've tried everything: different browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox), different devices (laptop, desktop, iPhone), clearing cache, incognito mode, even creating a whole new FSA ID. Nothing works and we're completely stuck. His SAI calculation can't even begin until we get past this step. Has ANYONE dealt with this assets page glitch and actually found a solution? I'm desperate at this point.

SAME THING happened to me last week!!! The asset page is TOTALLY broken for some accounts. I tried calling FSA for 2 days straight and couldn't even get through - just endless hold music then disconnects. My daughter's application is due in 10 days and we're freaking out.

•It's so frustrating! Did you manage to find ANY workaround yet? I'm considering just putting $0 for assets but I'm worried that will cause problems during verification later...

try filling it out between 11pm-5am... seriously. The site has fewer users then and sometimes glitchy pages work better. Also try using Microsoft Edge in incognito mode - worked for my nephews application when we had similar issues with the parent contribution section.

•Thanks for the suggestion - I haven't tried the late night approach yet. Will definitely give this a shot tonight with Edge incognito. Hoping this finally works!

I work in a college financial aid office, and we've seen this exact issue with several students this cycle. It seems to be related to a validation error that's not showing up properly. Here are two potential solutions: 1. Try entering ONLY numbers in the asset fields - no dollar signs, commas, or decimals. The system sometimes rejects formatted currency values. 2. If that doesn't work, try entering a very small value first (like $1) in each field, saving, and then going back to edit with the real values. If these don't work, you should request a manual override. Call Federal Student Aid at 1-800-433-3243 and specifically ask for a "technical exception for the asset page validation error" - this is different than just asking for general help. Request that they document the issue and provide a case number you can give to your son's college.

•Thank you SO much for these specific suggestions! We haven't tried the "numbers only" approach yet. Will definitely try both methods tonight and specifically ask for the technical exception if needed. Really appreciate knowing the exact language to use when calling.

have u contacted the school's finacial aid dept directly? not just the general number but the actual counselors? they have back channels to resolve fafsa issues. my daughter had smthing similar (diff section tho) and her assigned fin aid person fixed it in like 2 days

•That's a good point. I've only been talking to the front desk people at the financial aid office, not an actual counselor. I'll try to get connected with someone who handles FAFSA processing specifically. Thanks for the suggestion!

This is a relatively common technical issue with the 2024-2025 FAFSA. The assets page has a validation error that creates an infinite loop in specific scenarios. Based on my experience helping several families through this same issue, here's what's actually happening: The system is expecting specific formatting in the assets fields, but there's no clear guidance on what that format should be. What's worked for most of my clients: 1. Enter WHOLE NUMBERS ONLY - no decimals, dollar signs, or commas 2. Make sure there are no spaces before or after the numbers 3. If you have zero assets in a category, enter '0' rather than leaving it blank 4. After entering values, click SAVE before clicking NEXT 5. Try completing this section during off-peak hours (early morning or late night) If these steps don't resolve the issue, you have two effective options: 1. Request a manual processing exception through FSA (requires persistent calling) 2. Submit a paper FAFSA (slower but bypasses the technical issues) The colleges can sometimes push the application through on their end with documentation of the technical error. Make sure to document every call with FSA (date, time, representative name, and case number if provided).

•Thank you for this comprehensive explanation! I'm going to try these exact formatting tips tonight. If that doesn't work, I'll start documenting all calls and request the manual processing exception. Really appreciate the detailed guidance!

OMG I had this EXACT problem!! Spent weeks trying to figure it out and getting nowhere with FAFSA or my daughter's school. I finally tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual FSA agent who could help. They have this service where they wait on hold for you and call when an agent is ready - saved me hours of frustration! The agent was able to see the exact error in their system and pushed through a manual override for us. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Once I got through to the right person, they fixed it in about 10 minutes. My daughter's FAFSA was processed correctly the next day.

•Does this actually work? I've been trying to get through to FSA for days and keep getting disconnected after waiting for 45+ minutes!

•Yes! That's exactly why I tried it - I kept getting disconnected too. They just call you when an agent is ready to talk. The agent I got actually knew about this specific assets page glitch and said they've been seeing it a lot.

We had a similar issue with my son's FAFSA last month, and what finally worked was something really strange. We had to completely exit the FAFSA, clear browser cache, then log back in and go DIRECTLY to the assets page without touching any other pages first. Then we entered whole numbers only (no $ or commas or decimals) and it finally saved. If that doesn't work, another approach is to contact your student's prospective school's financial aid office and ask for their "FAFSA liaison" - this is usually a specific person who has direct access to troubleshoot FAFSA issues. They can sometimes override the error on their end when they import the application. Don't give up! These technical issues are frustrating but can be resolved. And definitely don't enter $0 if that's not accurate, as this will likely trigger verification later which is another headache.

•Thank you for sharing what worked for you! I'll try that specific approach of going directly to the assets page. And good point about not putting $0 - I was getting desperate enough to consider that but you're right that verification would just create more problems later.

maybe try waiting like an hour between attempts? sometimes the system has cached your previous tries even if you clear YOUR browser. the new fafsa is soooo buggy lol

UPDATE: We finally got it to work!! After trying multiple suggestions here, what finally worked was a combination of approaches. We: 1. Waited until 1am when site traffic was low 2. Used Microsoft Edge in incognito mode 3. Entered ONLY whole numbers with no formatting 4. Clicked SAVE twice before hitting NEXT For some reason, that specific combination fixed the glitch and we were able to move past the assets page to complete the application! I also ended up trying the Claimyr service mentioned above to speak with an FSA agent directly, who confirmed this is a known issue they're working to fix. They provided a case number that I shared with the university financial aid office just to document that we weren't just procrastinating. Thanks everyone for your help! Hope this helps others dealing with the same frustrating problem.

•Excellent! Glad to hear you found a solution. The double-save trick is interesting - I haven't heard that one before but will definitely remember it for future cases. And great job documenting everything with a case number - that's exactly the right approach when dealing with technical issues.

I'm a new member here and just wanted to say thank you for posting this! I'm dealing with the exact same issue with my daughter's FAFSA and was starting to think we were the only ones. The assets page keeps looping us back and we've been stuck for almost a week now. Reading through all the solutions here gives me hope that we can actually fix this. Going to try the late night + Edge incognito + whole numbers approach tonight. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and solutions - this community is so helpful!

•Welcome to the community! You're definitely not alone with this frustrating FAFSA glitch - it seems to be affecting quite a few families this cycle. The combination approach that QuantumQuasar shared (late night + Edge incognito + whole numbers + double-save) seems to have the best success rate based on what I've read here. Also don't hesitate to try the Claimyr service if you need to get through to FSA directly - sometimes having that case number documentation really helps when dealing with the schools too. Good luck tonight and please update us if it works for you!

As someone who's been helping families navigate FAFSA issues for years, I want to emphasize that this assets page glitch is unfortunately becoming more common with the redesigned FAFSA system. What's particularly frustrating is that it seems to affect accounts randomly - there's no clear pattern to predict who will encounter it. A few additional tips that have worked for some families I've assisted: 1. Try using a different internet connection entirely (mobile hotspot vs home wifi) - sometimes the issue is related to how your ISP routes traffic to the FAFSA servers 2. If you're copying/pasting values from a bank statement or spreadsheet, manually type the numbers instead - hidden formatting characters can cause validation errors 3. Make sure your FSA ID session hasn't timed out before starting the assets section - log out completely and log back in fresh The most important thing is to document everything as you're doing. Keep screenshots of the error, note the exact time and browser you used for each attempt, and save any case numbers from FSA calls. This documentation becomes crucial if you need to request manual processing or if the school needs to make adjustments on their end. Don't lose hope - every case I've worked on has eventually been resolved, though it sometimes takes multiple approaches. The community suggestions here are excellent and cover most of the successful workarounds I've seen.

•Thank you so much for these additional insights! The point about different internet connections is really interesting - I hadn't considered that the routing could be part of the problem. I'm definitely going to try typing the numbers manually instead of copy/pasting from our bank statements. That hidden formatting character issue makes a lot of sense and could explain why some people have success with the "numbers only" approach. Your advice about documenting everything is spot on too - I've been taking screenshots but hadn't thought about noting the exact times and browsers for each attempt. Really appreciate you sharing your experience helping other families with this!

Welcome to the community! I just joined after dealing with this exact same nightmare for the past two weeks. My son's FAFSA has been stuck in the same assets page loop and it's been absolutely maddening. Reading through all these solutions gives me so much relief - I was starting to think there was something fundamentally wrong with our application. I'm particularly interested in trying the combination that worked for QuantumQuasar (late night + Edge incognito + whole numbers + double-save). I've been attempting this during peak hours which probably isn't helping. Also going to try Marcus's suggestion about using a different internet connection - I've been using our home wifi exclusively. One question for those who successfully resolved this: did you notice the issue happening on any other sections of the FAFSA, or was it specifically isolated to the assets page? We haven't been able to get past assets to see if there are similar problems elsewhere. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and solutions. This community is a lifesaver when the official support channels keep passing you around in circles!

•Welcome to the community, Dmitry! I'm also relatively new here but have been following this thread closely since I'm dealing with a similar FAFSA issue (though mine is with the parent contribution section). From what I've read in the responses, it seems like the assets page glitch is pretty isolated to that specific section - most people who got past it didn't report additional loops elsewhere in the application. That's actually encouraging since it means once you solve this particular problem, the rest should go smoothly. I'd definitely recommend trying the late night approach first since that seems to have the highest success rate based on everyone's experiences. The server load theory makes a lot of sense. Also consider documenting everything like Marcus suggested - even if you get it working, having that paper trail seems really helpful when dealing with the schools. Good luck and please update us on what works for you!

I'm new to this community but had to join after finding this thread - we've been dealing with the exact same assets page nightmare for over a week now! My daughter's FAFSA keeps deleting all the asset information and looping us back endlessly. It's such a relief to find out we're not the only ones experiencing this and that there are actual solutions. I've read through all the suggestions here and plan to try the winning combination tonight: late hours + Edge incognito + whole numbers only + double-save before hitting next. I'm also going to try typing the values manually instead of copy/pasting from our bank statements, which seems like it could be causing hidden formatting issues. One thing I wanted to add that might help others - I noticed that when we get stuck in the loop, the page URL actually changes slightly each time it redirects us back to assets. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm wondering if this gives any clues about what's causing the validation error. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and solutions. After getting passed around between FSA and the college for days with no help, finding this community discussion with real working solutions is incredible. Will definitely update once I try these approaches!

•Welcome to the community, Chloe! That's a really interesting observation about the URL changing each time it loops back - I hadn't noticed that detail but it could definitely provide clues about what's triggering the validation error. You might want to document those URL variations when you try the fixes tonight, as that could be useful information if you end up needing to escalate to FSA for a manual override. The combination approach that worked for QuantumQuasar seems to be the most reliable solution based on everyone's experiences here. Also definitely try the manual typing instead of copy/paste - that hidden formatting theory makes so much sense! Please keep us updated on your progress, and don't hesitate to try the Claimyr service if you need to get through to an actual FSA agent who understands this specific glitch. Good luck tonight!

Just wanted to add another data point - I experienced this exact same assets page loop with my twin daughters' FAFSAs last month. What's interesting is that one application worked fine while the other got stuck in the endless loop, even though we were entering nearly identical asset information. This really supports the theory that it's a random validation bug affecting certain accounts. What finally worked for us was a slightly different approach: I used Safari on my iPhone (in private browsing mode) at around 2am, entered whole numbers only, and made sure to wait about 10 seconds between clicking "Save" and clicking "Next". The mobile interface seemed to handle the validation differently than the desktop versions we'd been trying. Also want to echo what others have said about documenting everything - I kept a detailed log of every attempt including browser, time, device, and error behavior. When I finally got through to an FSA supervisor (after using that Claimyr service mentioned earlier), having all that documentation made the conversation much more productive. They were able to see the technical error pattern in their logs and confirmed it's a known issue they're working to patch. For anyone still struggling with this, don't give up! The combination of late night attempts + alternative browsers/devices + proper formatting seems to work for most people eventually.

•Thank you for sharing that Victoria! The fact that one twin's application worked while the other got stuck really reinforces that this is a random system bug rather than something we're doing wrong. Your Safari mobile approach is really interesting - I hadn't considered that the mobile interface might handle validation differently. That's a great alternative for people who've exhausted all the desktop browser options. The 10-second wait between Save and Next is also a detail I haven't seen mentioned before but makes sense if there's some kind of processing delay causing the validation error. I'm definitely going to suggest the mobile Safari approach to others dealing with this issue. Really appreciate you sharing your documentation strategy too - it sounds like having that detailed log was key to getting productive help from the FSA supervisor!

I just joined this community after discovering this thread while desperately searching for solutions to the exact same FAFSA assets page nightmare! My son's application has been stuck in this endless loop for 6 days now and I was starting to panic about missing deadlines. Reading through everyone's experiences and solutions has been incredibly helpful - it's such a relief to know this is a widespread technical issue and not something we're doing wrong. I'm planning to try the combination approach that worked for QuantumQuasar tonight: late night timing + Edge incognito + whole numbers only + double-save. I'm also really intrigued by Victoria's mobile Safari approach and the 10-second wait technique. If the desktop methods don't work, I'll definitely try that as a backup plan. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and creating such a supportive community around these frustrating FAFSA technical issues. It's amazing how much more helpful this discussion has been than hours of calls to official support! Will definitely update with results after trying these solutions.

•Welcome to the community, Harper! I'm also a newcomer who just joined after struggling with FAFSA issues, and this thread has been such a lifesaver. It's incredible how many families are dealing with this exact same assets page glitch - really shows how widespread this technical problem is. The combination of solutions people have shared here gives me so much more confidence that we can actually resolve this than anything I heard from the official support channels. I'm planning to try the late night + Edge incognito approach tonight too, and like you, I'm keeping Victoria's mobile Safari method as a backup plan. The 10-second wait detail seems like it could be really important for letting the system process properly. Please definitely update us on how it goes - every success story helps encourage others who are still fighting this bug! Good luck tonight!

I just joined this community after finding this incredibly helpful thread! We've been battling the exact same FAFSA assets page loop for my daughter's application for over a week now. Every time we enter her savings account balance ($2,180) and CD investment ($4,500), it saves temporarily but then dumps us right back to a blank assets page when we try to move forward. It's been absolutely maddening! What's given me the most hope is seeing QuantumQuasar's success with the combination approach and all the other solutions people have shared here. I'm planning to try tonight: late night (around midnight) + Microsoft Edge incognito + whole numbers only + the double-save technique before hitting next. If that doesn't work, I'll try Victoria's mobile Safari method with the 10-second wait. I also really appreciate Marcus's point about documenting everything - I've started keeping a detailed log of each attempt with timestamps and browser info, which I wish I'd thought of earlier. After days of getting nowhere with official support channels, finding this community with real working solutions and people who actually understand this specific glitch has been such a relief. Thank you all for sharing your experiences - will definitely update once I try these approaches!
