FAFSA delays at Rutgers while other NJ schools received our information - anyone else?

Just had the most frustrating call with Rutgers Financial Aid office about our FAFSA application. The representative told me they can't verify if they've received ANY of our FAFSA information from the Department of Education for my daughter (incoming freshman). They said 'most student information has not been received from the DOE' and we probably won't hear anything until early May! This seems ridiculous when we've already received notifications from FOUR other New Jersey schools (two public, two private) confirming they've processed our FAFSA data. Has anyone else had this issue with Rutgers specifically? Are they just behind, or should I be worried something went wrong with our FAFSA designation for Rutgers? Starting to panic since housing deposits are due soon and we need to compare financial aid packages.

Same here. My son's other schools (Rowan and TCNJ) already sent preliminary aid packages, but nothing from Rutgers. When I called last week, they said they're having 'system integration issues' with the new FAFSA format and are behind schedule. The rep did confirm our FAFSA was received in their system though - they just haven't processed it into an aid package yet. Try calling again and ask specifically if your FAFSA was received in their system at all.

Thanks for that info! I'll definitely call back and ask that specific question. Did they give you any timeline for when they might finish processing? The May timeframe they gave me seems so late compared to other schools.

rutgers is ALWAYS behind with financial aid stuff!! my daughter goes there now (junior) and every single year theyve been the last to get aid packages out. dont stress too much, they eventually get to it. just keep checking ur portal.

Agreed! They were a month behind everyone else when my son applied in 2022. Still got a decent package though.

This FAFSA delay situation is actually affecting many schools this year, but some are handling it better than others. The Department of Education has been sending data in batches, and some schools' systems are processing it more efficiently. A few things you can do: 1. Verify on your StudentAid.gov account that Rutgers is listed as one of your selected schools (check your FAFSA confirmation page) 2. Call Rutgers again but ask specifically if they can see that your FAFSA was designated to them in their system (not just if it's been processed) 3. If housing deposits are due before aid packages, contact the housing office to ask about deadline extensions - many schools are offering these due to the FAFSA delays The new FAFSA process has created unprecedented delays this year, so you're definitely not alone in this frustration!

Thank you for this detailed advice! I just checked my daughter's StudentAid.gov account and Rutgers is definitely listed there. I'll try calling again tomorrow with your specific question about whether they can see it in their system at all. Good idea about contacting housing too - I hadn't thought of that!

I work at a different NJ college (not Rutgers) and can tell you that the FAFSA delays this year are INSANE across the board. The Department of Education is sending data in weird batches - some schools got most of their students' info weeks ago, others are still waiting. It's totally random. Rutgers is huge and has a lot more applications to process than smaller schools, so that's probably part of the problem too. I wouldn't worry that anything is wrong with your specific application.

This is so frustrating! The DOE completely botched this year's rollout. I don't understand why they couldn't have tested the new system more thoroughly before going live with it. Now thousands of students and families are in limbo with critical financial decisions hanging in the balance. And the schools are stuck in the middle taking all the blame!

I had the exact same issue with Rutgers. After multiple failed calls where I was disconnected or on hold forever, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to someone senior in their financial aid department. They connected me to an actual human within 5 minutes instead of the hours I wasted before. The person I spoke with confirmed they DID have my daughter's FAFSA info but it was stuck in their processing queue due to the new SAI calculations. Check out their video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ After that call, I miraculously got her aid package in the portal just three days later. Might be worth trying if you're getting nowhere with regular calls.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've never heard of that service before. I'll try calling one more time myself tomorrow, but if I get nowhere, I might try this. Did you have to provide them with any personal information to use the service?

Just basic contact info. It's really just a callback service that navigates the phone tree for you and gets you to a real person faster. They don't need your financial details or anything like that.

You're absolutely right to be frustrated. One option is to contact both schools' admissions offices (not financial aid) and explain your situation. Ask if they can extend your deposit deadline due to the FAFSA delays. Many schools are offering extensions this year specifically because of these issues. You might be able to put down a smaller placeholder deposit at both schools until you can make a final decision with complete financial information.

My daughter just got her Rutgers package yesterday actually. We submitted FAFSA back in January. Maybe they're going in some kind of order?

That's encouraging! We submitted in early February. Can I ask which school within Rutgers your daughter applied to? Wondering if different schools within the university have different timelines.

She's going to the business school on New Brunswick campus. But I don't think that matters for FAFSA processing - pretty sure it all goes through the same central financial aid office for the whole university.

This is incredibly concerning. The new FAFSA system has been plagued with problems from the start, but the inconsistency between schools is especially troubling. When I called the Federal Student Aid Information Center about a similar issue, they explained that schools have different systems for ingesting the FAFSA data, and some are adapting to the new format better than others. One important thing to understand is that the Department of Education technically sent the first batch of FAFSA data to schools on January 30th, with subsequent batches weekly. So if Rutgers is saying they haven't received anything, that's not entirely accurate - they likely have received data but are having trouble processing it in their system. I'd recommend documenting all your communications with them, and if necessary, reaching out to your congressional representative's constituent services office. They can sometimes help expedite these federal education issues.

That's really interesting about the data being sent in batches. When I called, the representative definitely made it sound like the problem was on the Department of Education's end, not their systems. I'll try another call and see if I can get more specific information. Thanks for the suggestion about congressional offices - never would have thought of that!

my cousin works in rutgers financial aid office (not supposed to tell anyone lol) and she said theyre SWAMPED because the new FAFSA system sent them data in a format their software cant read properly. theyre literally having to manually review thousands of applications!!! she said absolutely call and be polite but persistent.

This actually makes a lot of sense. Each university has their own financial aid management software, and the Department of Education changed the data format this year without giving vendors enough time to update their systems. I work in higher ed IT (not at Rutgers), and it's been a nightmare everywhere. Some schools just got luckier with their software vendors responding faster with updates.

I'm dealing with the exact same situation! My daughter applied to Rutgers and several other schools, and we've heard back from everyone except Rutgers. It's so stressful trying to make decisions without knowing what kind of aid package they'll offer. What's really frustrating is that when I called last week, they couldn't even tell me if our FAFSA was in their system at all - just that they're "still processing applications from the Department of Education." Meanwhile, Montclair State and Stockton both sent aid letters weeks ago using the same FAFSA data! I'm going to try calling again this week and ask the specific questions people have mentioned here about whether they can at least see our FAFSA in their system. Fingers crossed we all hear something soon - this waiting is killing me!

I'm in the exact same boat! My son applied to Rutgers and we're still waiting while other schools have already sent packages. It's so nerve-wracking trying to make such an important decision without all the information. The inconsistency is what gets me - how can some schools process the same FAFSA data so quickly while others are months behind? I hope when you call again you get someone who can at least confirm they have your information in their system. That would be some peace of mind at least!
