FAFSA shows complete but college says they haven't received it - stuck in financial aid limbo!
I'm at my wit's end with this FAFSA situation! We submitted our application back in early January, and the studentaid.gov site shows everything is complete and in 'good order.' But when my daughter tried to confirm her enrollment at State University, they're telling us they STILL haven't received her FAFSA data! We can't commit without seeing the financial aid package first (especially since my husband lost his job in March and we need to request additional aid). The school says they can't process any special circumstances request until they receive the original FAFSA. It's the most frustrating catch-22! We've already talked to both the financial aid office and called the Federal Student Aid info line, but we're getting nowhere. The May 1st decision deadline is coming up fast - what are we supposed to do? Has anyone dealt with this kind of FAFSA transmission problem before?

Check if your FAFSA submission actually included that college on your school list. I submitted in Dec and thought I was good, then realized I forgot to add 2 schools to my list! Go back into your FAFSA and verify State Univ is actually listed there with the right school code.

•Just double-checked and yes, their school code is definitely on our list (along with 3 other schools that DID receive it). That's what makes this so frustrating!

I work in a financial aid office, and this happens more than you'd think! First, make sure you're looking at the correct aid year (2025-2026) in your FAFSA. Next, check if you received a Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation - without that, your FAFSA isn't fully processed. Then call the school again and ask if they can look up your student by SSN in their system to see if maybe the FAFSA arrived but isn't matching correctly. Sometimes there's a name or birthdate discrepancy that prevents the records from linking properly.

•Yes, we definitely have the right aid year and received our SAI (which was 4820). The school says they checked by SSN and just don't have it. What's weird is that the other schools on our list received it fine!

had the same exact problem last year!!! turns out the SAI site was showing everything was fine BUT there was some weird verification flag on my account that nobody told me about. you need to look at the actual processed date on your FAFSA and make sure it matches when you submitted it

•How did you find out about the verification flag? Was it shown somewhere on the studentaid.gov site? The processed date is showing January 17th, which sounds right.

You need to use the FAFSA correction feature to resend your information. Log into studentaid.gov, click on "Make FAFSA Corrections," confirm all the information is correct, and then resubmit. This forces the system to retransmit your FAFSA to all the schools on your list. I've seen this fix the issue in about 75% of cases where the FAFSA was submitted but the school claims they never received it. The other 25% usually involves some technical issue with how the school processes incoming FAFSA data.

•THIS⬆️⬆️⬆️ Happened to my son last year - we thought everything was fine but his FAFSA got hung up in processing limbo or something. The correction trick fixed it. Just change something small like add a space to your address and then change it back, save, and resubmit!

•Thank you! I'm going to try this right away. Do you know how long it typically takes for schools to receive the data after doing the correction/resubmission?

Usually 3-5 business days for the resubmitted FAFSA to reach the schools. Make sure to follow up with the financial aid office afterward to confirm they received it. If they still don't have it after a week, you'll need to ask for a "FAFSA record request" from Federal Student Aid.

•When I had this problem I spent 4 HOURS trying to get through to someone at Federal Student Aid for that record request thing. Kept getting disconnected or put on endless hold. Eventually I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that held my place in the phone queue and called me back when an agent was available. Saved me so much time and frustration! They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Way better than waiting on hold all day.

did u apply for a css profile too? some schools want both and get confusion if u only do fasfa. my cousin had this happen and the school was waiting for both documents but didnt tell him until he went in person to the financial aid office!!

•State University doesn't require CSS Profile, just the FAFSA - I specifically asked about that when we visited in the fall. But good thought!

THE WHOLE FINANCIAL AID SYSTEM IS A JOKE!! Every year something goes wrong with fafsa and nobody ever has answers!!! I had to drive 2 HOURS to my son's college last year just to sit down with a REAL PERSON who could actually help cause nobody answered phones or emails. so sick of this broken system!!!

•I feel this in my SOUL. Three kids through college and every single year there was some ridiculous FAFSA issue that took weeks to resolve. And then they wonder why people get frustrated with the system 🙄

Quick update question - after you submit the correction, ask the school's financial aid office to check for your FAFSA using the ISIR system (that's the institutional record of your FAFSA data). Sometimes schools can see ISIRs before they fully import into their main system. Also, don't forget to mention your change in financial circumstances right away. While they won't process it until they have your FAFSA, you can at least get the Professional Judgment request forms started. Ask specifically for their "Special Circumstances" or "Income Adjustment" form based on job loss.

•Thank you so much! I made the correction yesterday and I'll call tomorrow to ask them to check ISIR. Already downloaded the special circumstances forms from their website so we'll be ready to submit those as soon as they see our FAFSA. Fingers crossed this works!

one more thing to try if the correction doesn't work - have your daughter check her school portal account too. Sometimes the financial aid office actually HAS the FAFSA but it's not showing up right in their system. My son's university actually had his FAFSA but it was sitting in some verification queue and nobody bothered to tell us!

•I'll have her check that too - good idea! At this point we're willing to try anything.

Just checking back - did the FAFSA correction trick work? Were you able to get this resolved?

•YES! The correction worked! I called the financial aid office this morning and they confirmed they received our FAFSA yesterday. Now we're submitting the special circumstances request for my husband's job loss. Thank you all so much for the help - I was seriously ready to pull my hair out over this!

So glad to hear the correction worked! That FAFSA transmission glitch seems to happen way more often than it should. For anyone else reading this thread with similar issues, definitely try the correction/resubmission method first - it's usually the quickest fix. And Admin_Masters, make sure to follow up on that special circumstances request regularly. Job loss appeals can take a few weeks to process, but they're usually pretty understanding about those situations. Good luck with everything!

•This is such a relief to hear! I'm actually dealing with a similar situation right now - my FAFSA shows complete but two of my schools say they haven't received it. Going to try the correction method this weekend. Quick question though - when you did the correction, did you actually change anything or just resubmit as-is? And how long did it take for the school to confirm they got it after you resubmitted?
