FAFSA correction processing time - still stuck on 'pending' after 2 weeks
I submitted my initial FAFSA application about a month ago, but made a huge mistake reporting my parent's retirement account as student assets (yikes). I submitted corrections two weeks ago through studentaid.gov, but my status is still showing as 'pending review' with no updates. My college financial aid office is asking for my final SAI calculation by next Friday for scholarship consideration. Does anyone know how long these corrections typically take to process? I'm starting to panic that I'll miss out on aid opportunities because of this delay. Has anyone gone through a similar situation this year with the new FAFSA system?

•Thanks for the info! I'll definitely call my financial aid office tomorrow. Did you receive any notification when yours was finally processed or did you just have to keep checking the portal?

In my experience as a financial aid counselor, FAFSA corrections are taking 2-3 weeks to process this year due to the new system implementation. I recommend contacting your school's financial aid office immediately - they can often work with preliminary information while waiting for the official SAI calculation. Most schools understand the delays and have processes for handling these situations. The important thing is to be proactive in communicating with them rather than waiting for the correction to process.

•Thank you so much! That's really reassuring. I'll make an appointment with my financial aid advisor first thing tomorrow.

I made a correction to my fafsa in early February and it's STILL not processed!!! This new system is a complete disaster. The old one never took more than a few days for updates. I've been waiting almost 6 weeks now.

•That's definitely not normal, even with the new system delays. Have you tried contacting Federal Student Aid directly about the status? You might have an issue that needs manual intervention.

•I tried calling FAFSA like 5 times but either got disconnected or was on hold forever and had to hang up. So frustrating!!

Just a heads up, I had to use Claimyr (claimyr.com) to finally get through to a FAFSA agent about my correction delays. I was stuck waiting for almost 3 weeks with no movement until I used their service - they got me connected to a real person in like 10 minutes who actually fixed my issue on the spot. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ if you're interested. Saved me from missing my school's financial aid deadline because of FAFSA processing delays.

Corrections processing time really depends on what you're correcting. Changes to income or assets (like your retirement account fix) typically take 2-3 weeks. Simple demographic corrections might process faster. The important thing to understand is that colleges can actually work with incomplete or preliminary SAI calculations - especially if you explain the situation. Contact your financial aid office immediately, provide documentation of the correction submission, and ask if they can make a preliminary assessment while waiting for the official calculation. Most schools have procedures for this exact situation.

•That's extremely helpful! I didn't realize schools could work with preliminary calculations. I'll definitely bring documentation of my correction submission when I meet with them.

The whole system is rigged anyway. Even after your correction goes through, watch them find another reason to delay your aid or give you less than you deserve. This whole process is designed to make students give up.

•While I understand your frustration, the delays are primarily due to the new FAFSA simplification implementation, not an intentional effort to reduce aid. Many students are actually qualifying for more aid under the new formula, though the transition has certainly been rocky.

UPDATE: I called my school's financial aid office this morning and explained the situation. They were actually super understanding! They said they can use my corrected information for preliminary calculations while waiting for the official FAFSA to update. They also gave me a 2-week extension on the scholarship deadline. Thank you all for your advice - feeling much less stressed now!

•That's excellent news! This is exactly why we always recommend proactive communication with your financial aid office. They have significant flexibility to work with students experiencing FAFSA processing delays. Make sure to follow up if you don't see the correction process within another week or so.

•Great to hear! And for future reference (for anyone reading this thread), always make a note of exactly what you corrected and when. Screenshots of confirmation pages can be really helpful when working with your financial aid office on preliminary reviews.

As someone who went through FAFSA corrections last year, I can confirm that 2-3 weeks is pretty typical now with the new system. One thing that helped me was creating a simple timeline document showing when I submitted the original FAFSA, when I discovered the error, when I submitted corrections, and what I corrected. This was super useful when talking to my financial aid office because they could see I was being proactive about the process. Also, don't forget to check your studentaid.gov account every few days - sometimes the status updates without sending an email notification. Glad to see your school was understanding about the extension!

•That's really smart advice about keeping a timeline document! I wish I had thought of that earlier - it would have made explaining everything to my financial aid office so much clearer. I've been checking my portal obsessively but you're right that sometimes the updates don't come with notifications. Thanks for the tip!
