FAFSA SAI number delayed - is it because corrections aren't available yet?

I submitted my FAFSA for 2025-2026 about two weeks ago and still haven't received my SAI number. When I log into the studentaid.gov portal, it shows my application as 'processing' but no SAI calculation yet. I noticed there's a banner saying 'corrections aren't available at this time' - could that be what's causing the delay? I'm pretty sure I made a mistake on my parent's retirement contribution amount (put $8,500 instead of $5,800), but I can't fix it until corrections open up. Would they withhold my SAI calculation until I can make that correction? Getting really anxious since my school's priority deadline is coming up fast!

The correction availability shouldn't affect your initial SAI calculation. Your FAFSA submission and SAI calculation are separate from the corrections process. Most applications are getting SAI numbers within 3-5 business days right now, so two weeks is definitely longer than usual. Have you checked your email (including spam folder) for any requests for verification? Sometimes they need additional documentation before they'll calculate your SAI.

Thanks for the info! I've checked all my email folders and there's nothing from FSA about verification or additional docs needed. Should I just keep waiting or is there something else I can try?

im in the same boat! submitted like 18 days ago and still no SAI. tried calling the fed student aid number but gave up after being on hold for like an hour lol

Ugh that's even worse! Did you get any kind of explanation when you called before giving up? I'm worried this is gonna mess up my chances for getting the full aid package!

I used Claimyr to get through to an FSA agent last week when I had the same problem. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Basically they hold your place in line and call you when an agent is available. I found out my application was flagged for a data match issue with my SSN that wasn't showing up on my account. After they fixed it, I got my SAI the next day. Super worth checking out claimyr.com instead of waiting on hold forever.

I've never heard of that service before. Did it cost anything? I really need to talk to someone because this delay is making me panic about my aid package.

Yeah there is a fee but honestly it saved me from missing work to sit on hold all day. The agent explained that sometimes there are application flags that don't show up in your online account status, which is probably what's happening with your application too.

To directly answer your question: no, the inability to make corrections right now has nothing to do with your SAI calculation delay. These are separate systems. The Department of Education processes your initial submission to generate the SAI, while the corrections feature is a separate functionality that comes online a bit later in the cycle. Two possibilities for your delay: 1. System backlog: There have been processing delays reported for the 2025-26 cycle 2. Silent verification: Sometimes applications are selected for verification without immediate notification One thing I've seen work for students in your situation is to use the "Request Professional Judgment" form to alert your school's financial aid office about both the delay and the error you need to correct. They can sometimes submit a status inquiry to FSA directly.

Thank you, this is super helpful! I didn't realize that Professional Judgment could be used for this situation. I'll contact my school's financial aid office tomorrow.

SAME THING last year!!! The FAFSA system is COMPLETELY BROKEN and they don't care at all about students!!! I waited almost THREE WEEKS for my SAI and found out later they had "lost" part of my application but NEVER BOTHERED to tell me until I called them FIVE TIMES. By then I missed my school's priority deadline and got WAY less aid than I qualified for. The system is designed to make it impossible to get help.

Sorry that happened to you, but it's not actually typical. Most apps process in a few days. Sounds like you had a specific technical issue.

Not" typical lol tell that to the THOUSANDS of students who get screwed by FAFSA errors every year! Just "search FAFSA" delays and'you ll see'it s a MASSIVE problem they refuse tofix!

Wait im confused about something - don't u get ur SAI instantly now? My brother filled out his FAFSA in December and got his SAI right on the confirmation page at the end. I thought that was the whole point of the new FAFSA system?

This is a common misconception. The 2025-26 FAFSA form provides an *estimated* SAI on the confirmation page, but the official SAI is only calculated after processing is complete. The official SAI is what's sent to schools and appears in your studentaid.gov account after processing. Additional verification steps can cause delays between the estimate and the official calculation.

UPDATE: I took everyone's advice here and did two things: 1) Used Claimyr to actually get through to FSA after waiting 3 days on their callback list with no response, and 2) Contacted my school's financial aid office. Turns out there was an issue with how my parent's tax info transferred from the IRS! The agent said there was a data mismatch that wasn't visible on my end. They fixed it right away and said I should get my official SAI within 3-5 business days. The financial aid office also told me they'd make a note in my file that I submitted before the priority deadline despite the processing delay. Thanks everyone for your help! I'll update when I finally get my SAI!

Great news! This is exactly why it's always worth reaching out when something seems off with your FAFSA processing. Data match issues are surprisingly common but easily fixed once you can actually speak with someone.

Pro tip for next year: submit your FAFSA at least 4-6 weeks before your school's priority deadline. Even in normal years there can be processing delays or verification requirements that take time to resolve. I've worked with hundreds of students and the ones who submit early almost never have deadline issues.

That's good advice. I definitely waited too long this year thinking it would process quickly. Won't make that mistake again!
