FAFSA application under review - missing parent signature - urgent help needed

I'm freaking out right now! My son and I completed his 2025-2026 FAFSA last night, but somehow it got submitted without my electronic signature. Now his application status shows 'Under Review' on the studentaid.gov portal. I got an email saying there's an issue with the application, but no specific instructions on how to fix it. Has anyone dealt with this signature problem before? Will this delay his SAI calculation? His college priority deadline is in 3 weeks and I'm worried this will affect his financial aid package. Do we need to start a whole new application or is there a way to just add my signature now?

Chill out, this happens ALL the time. My daughter's FAFSA did the same thing last month. Just log back into studentaid.gov, go to your son's application, and there should be an option to complete the missing signature. It takes like 2 minutes to fix.

Thanks for responding! I looked but I don't see any option to add my signature now that it's already submitted. When I click on the application, it just shows 'Under Review' with a yellow caution icon. There's no edit button anywhere I can find.

This is actually a common issue with the redesigned FAFSA system. You'll need to take specific steps: 1. First, make sure you're logged in with YOUR FSA ID (the parent), not your son's 2. Go to the 'My FAFSA' section 3. Look for 'FAFSA Applications You Need to Sign' 4. Select the application and complete the signature process If you don't see these options, you'll need to contact Federal Student Aid directly. The application won't process correctly until all required signatures are present, and yes, this could delay his Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation.

Thank you so much for these specific steps. I just checked again using my FSA ID and I still don't see the option you mentioned. I guess I need to call them directly. Do you know if there's a specific department I should ask for?

UGH the same thing happened to me with my twins' applications!!!! Took FOREVER to get through to someone at FSA. I spent like 3 hours on hold and then got disconnected TWICE. So frustrating. When I finally got through, they told me there was a system glitch and they had to manually add a note to our file. The applications were delayed by almost 3 weeks 😡

Wow 3 hours on hold??? That's crazy. Did that affect your kids' financial aid packages?

@user8 YES it did impact our aid because one school had an early priority deadline that we missed because of the delay. We lost out on some institutional scholarships because our FAFSA wasn't processed in time. I'm still fighting with the financial aid office about it.

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! Did you try calling FSA more than once? I really can't afford to miss any deadlines.

I recently had a similar issue with my son's FAFSA, and after getting disconnected multiple times, I used Claimyr to get through to an FSA agent. It basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration. Their video demo explains it better than I can: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ and the website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out. The agent was able to send a special link to complete my signature.

Thank you! I've never heard of this service before but I'll definitely check it out. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get this resolved quickly.

Does anyone know if this signature thing affects your SAI score? My daughter's FAFSA has been "processing" for like a month now and her SAI is way higher than we expected based on our income. Wondering if missing signatures can somehow mess up the calculation?

The missing signature won't affect the SAI calculation itself, but it will delay the processing. The SAI is calculated based on the financial information you provided. If your SAI seems incorrect, that's a separate issue - you might have entered incorrect information or misunderstood how certain assets are counted in the new FAFSA formula.

To the original poster - one more thing - make sure you check your email spam folder. Sometimes FSA sends a special signature link that ends up in spam. It usually has "ACTION REQUIRED" in the subject line.

Good tip! Just checked and there's nothing there either. I guess I'll have to call them.

I work in a college financial aid office, and I can tell you this happens frequently. The good news is that once the signature issue is resolved, these applications are usually processed within 3-5 days. Most colleges understand these FAFSA processing delays and will work with you if you document your attempts to resolve the issue. I recommend: 1. Call FSA directly at 1-800-433-3243 2. Ask for the "signature resolution department" 3. Take notes during your call (get the rep's ID number) 4. Request they send you an email confirmation once the issue is resolved 5. Forward that confirmation to your son's college financial aid office Many schools have contingency plans for these FAFSA delays and may still consider him for priority aid if you document the signature issue was beyond your control.

Thank you so much for this insider perspective! That's really reassuring. I'll call first thing tomorrow morning and make sure to get documentation. Should I also reach out to the college financial aid office proactively to let them know about this issue?

Yes, I would definitely recommend contacting the financial aid office at each school your son applied to. Send them a brief email explaining the signature issue, that you're actively working with FSA to resolve it, and ask if this will affect his priority deadline consideration. Many schools will make a note in his file and may extend the deadline for his specific situation. Just be sure to follow up once the signature issue is actually resolved with proof from FSA.

Perfect, I'll do that. You've all been so helpful. I'll update once I get this resolved in case it helps someone else!
