FAFSA signature problem - son can't sign form despite email being linked
I'm totally stuck with this FAFSA signature issue. My husband completed all the parent sections for our son's 2025-2026 application last week. The only thing missing now is our son's signature, but he hasn't received any email or notification about signing it. His email is definitely linked to the application (we triple-checked), but there's no option for him to sign? The application shows as "Waiting for student signature" on my husband's dashboard. My son created his FSA ID months ago and we linked his email correctly. What are we missing here? Does he need to log in separately with his own FSA ID somewhere? The deadline for his top-choice school is coming up in 10 days and I'm getting really worried!

Your son needs to log into studentaid.gov using HIS OWN FSA ID (not yours or your husband's). Once he logs in, he should see the application under "You have tasks to complete" on his dashboard. He clicks on that, reviews the information, and then provides his signature electronically. The parent completing the form doesn't generate an automatic email to the student - he has to actively log in with his own credentials.

•Thank you! We didn't realize he needed to login separately. I just texted him at college to check his dashboard right away. Quick follow-up: will he be able to see all the financial information my husband entered? He doesn't know our exact income and I'm not sure if we want him seeing all those details...

•That's so frustrating! You'd think they'd send some kind of notification. Did your student have any issues once they logged in?

This is a common point of confusion with FAFSA. Here's the exact process: 1. Your son needs to log into studentaid.gov with his own FSA ID 2. On his dashboard, he'll see "You have a FAFSA form to review and sign" 3. He clicks on that notification 4. He'll need to review the data (yes, he can see the financial information) 5. He electronically signs with his FSA ID password One important note: If your son has forgotten his FSA ID username or password, he'll need to recover it using the "Forgot Username" or "Forgot Password" links. Using the wrong credentials repeatedly could lock the account.

•Thank you for the clear steps! I didn't realize he'd be able to see all our financial info, but I guess that makes sense. I'll make sure he knows his FSA ID login - it's been months since he created it.

Same thing happened with my daughter's application! The whole FAFSA redesign is so confusing. What worked for us was having her go directly to studentaid.gov and login there. No email ever came. Make sure he uses the EXACT same email that's linked to the application though.

I spent HOURS trying to reach someone at Federal Student Aid when we had this exact issue. Their phone system is completely overwhelmed right now with the new FAFSA rollout. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a live agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting for hours or getting disconnected. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent confirmed what others have said - your son needs to login with his FSA ID, and there's no automatic notification sent. They really should fix that about the system!

•Thank you for the resource! If we run into any problems with him signing, I might need this. The disconnecting phone calls are so frustrating when you're trying to resolve something time-sensitive.

I'm going through this nightmare with TWO kids applying right now! The current FAFSA system is terrible compared to how it used to work. Another thing to check - make sure your son's name, DOB, and SSN match EXACTLY between his FSA ID and the FAFSA application. Even small differences can cause the signature step to fail. My daughter's middle initial being included in one place but not the other caused a week-long delay for us.

•Oh no, that's concerning. We'll double-check all his info. Did you eventually get it resolved just by fixing the discrepancy, or did you need to contact someone?

•We had to call FSA, wait on hold for 2+ hours, and then they fixed it on their end. Supposedly there's a way to correct it yourself, but the agent just handled it for us after verifying our identity. Such a headache!

my son just did this last week!! he had to click around his dashboard for a while but eventually found where to sign. the button was kinda hidden in the tasks section. tell him to look for "FAFSA waiting for signature" or something like that

•Thank you! Just texted my son to look specifically in his tasks section. Fingers crossed he finds it!

Just following up - were you able to get your son's signature completed? Remember that after he signs, there's one more step: the form is officially submitted only after signing. You should both receive a confirmation email with a confirmation number once that happens. This is an important detail many people miss.

•Yes! He finally found it in his dashboard. You were right about the confirmation email - we both got it yesterday. Such a relief! His SAI score was higher than we expected though... might need to figure out if we made a mistake somewhere. Thank you again for your help!
