FAFSA showing 'signature required' error but we already signed - stuck in review
My son submitted his FAFSA application on February 2nd and immediately got a confusing email saying his SAI couldn't be calculated because his signature was missing - but I watched him sign it electronically! The application is still showing as 'in review' on studentaid.gov and there's no obvious way for him to add his signature again. We're getting concerned because his college priority deadline is coming up in three weeks. Has anyone else dealt with this signature glitch? Any solutions that actually worked? I tried calling the FAFSA helpline twice but got disconnected after waiting 45+ minutes each time.

same thing happened to my daughter last week! so annoying. we ended up calling her school's financial aid office and they told us its a common glitch with the new 2025-2026 FAFSA system. they said to just keep checking the portal every few days and eventually it will update itself

•Thanks for responding! Did they give you any timeline for how long it might take to resolve itself? We're getting nervous about missing deadlines.

This issue is happening quite frequently with the redesigned FAFSA system. What you're experiencing is a synchronization problem between the signature system and the application processing system. Here's what I recommend: 1. Take screenshots of the FAFSA submission confirmation page if you still have access to it 2. Use the 'Contact Us' form on studentaid.gov to send a detailed message about the error 3. Check if your son's FSA ID shows as 'verified' in the system 4. Ask your son to log in separately (not through your account) to see if he gets a different status message The system usually corrects itself within 5-10 business days, but it's worth being proactive about documentation in case you need to appeal deadline issues with schools.

•Thank you for the detailed advice! I didn't think to check if his FSA ID is showing as verified. I'll have him log in separately tonight to see if he gets a different message. Fortunately I did take screenshots of the confirmation page (learned that lesson the hard way with last year's CSS Profile).

OMG THIS STUPID SIGNATURE ERROR!!! I've been fighting with it for THREE WEEKS now! Called FSA 9 TIMES!!! Different agent tells me something different every single time. One says wait, another says resubmit, another says there's no problem at all!!! My daughter might lose her scholarship because of this garbage system. The new FAFSA is a complete DISASTER! Why did they have to "fix" something that wasn't broken????? 😡😡😡

•that sucks! have u tried talking to the school financial aid office? sometimes they can override the deadlines if u can prove u submitted on time

•Yes, we've been in contact with the school but they're being TOTALLY unhelpful. Just keep saying "we need a valid SAI calculation before we can process aid" like that helps us AT ALL when the stupid system won't calculate it!!!

I work in a university financial aid office, and we're seeing this signature error quite frequently. It's usually related to how the parent and student FSA IDs are linking (or not linking) with the application. Here's what's been working for our students: 1. Both student and parent should log in separately to studentaid.gov and check their profile settings to ensure all verification elements are complete 2. Look for a "Tasks" or "Action Required" section on the dashboard - sometimes the signature request is hidden there 3. If you find nothing after 7 days, try submitting a correction to the FAFSA (even something minor like adding a middle initial) which often triggers the system to recognize the signatures Most importantly, ask your son's school for a FAFSA processing extension. Many institutions are being flexible this year due to the widespread FAFSA issues.

•Thank you so much for the insight! That makes sense that it might be an FSA ID linking issue. We'll check for any action items in both accounts and try the correction submission trick if needed. I'll definitely reach out to his schools about possible extensions too.

I had exactly this problem and spent hours trying to get through to someone at Federal Student Aid. After three disconnected calls, I tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent quickly. They have this service where they wait on hold for you and call when an agent is ready. Saved me hours of frustration! They have a video demo too: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent I spoke with had me verify my son's FSA ID information and then manually noted in the system that the signatures were already provided. Application was processed correctly two days later.

•That service sounds like exactly what I need right now! I'm going to check it out tonight. So glad to hear they were able to fix it manually for you. Did you need to provide any specific documentation to prove you had already signed?

•No documentation needed! The agent just asked for our FSA IDs and confirmation numbers from the original submission. They could see in their system that signatures had been submitted but weren't being recognized by the processing system. Definitely worth getting through to a real person.

•We definitely completed the full submission because we got the confirmation page and number. But thanks for the suggestion - I'm sure that happens to a lot of people with how confusing the new interface is!

A quick update based on recent information: The Department of Education acknowledged this signature glitch officially last week. They're implementing a fix that should be complete by February 25th. If your application was submitted before February 15th and is still showing this error by the 25th, they recommend resubmitting. One other thing to note - some schools are extending their priority deadlines in response to these widespread FAFSA issues, so it's worth checking your son's specific school websites for updates.

•Thank you for this update! That's very helpful to know there's an official acknowledgment and timeline. I'll definitely check his schools' websites for deadline extensions.

I'm dealing with the exact same issue right now! My daughter submitted her FAFSA in early February and we're getting that frustrating "signature required" error even though we both signed electronically. It's so stressful with college deadlines approaching. Reading through all these responses is actually really helpful - sounds like this is a widespread problem with the new system. I'm going to try checking both our FSA ID verification statuses like Connor suggested, and maybe look into that Claimyr service Paolo mentioned since I can't seem to get through to FSA either. Has anyone heard if schools are being understanding about these technical delays when it comes to financial aid processing? I'm worried this might affect my daughter's aid package even though it's not our fault the system is glitchy.
