FAFSA signature page glitch - can't submit electronic signature for my son

My son got this email from FAFSA saying his application is incomplete because he's missing his signature. He's tried logging in like 20 times but the signature section is completely grayed out - he can't click anything or add his signature! We need to get this resolved ASAP because his college financial aid office is holding his entire package until the FAFSA is complete. Has anyone else had this signature glitch? I'm worried because his housing deposit is due next week and we need to know what aid he's getting before committing. Any advice on fixing this or reaching someone at FSA who can actually help?

same thing hapnd to me last month!! the signature page is GARBAGE. have u tried using a different browser? mine wouldn't work on chrome but worked fine on firefox

Thanks for responding! We tried Chrome and Safari but I'll have him try Firefox tonight. Did you have to start a new application or were you able to fix the existing one?

This is a common issue with the 2025-2026 FAFSA. The electronic signature system sometimes fails to recognize that the student has already set up their FSA ID correctly. There are three things to try: 1. Clear all cookies/cache and try logging in from an incognito/private window 2. Wait 24-48 hours - sometimes the system needs time to sync the FSA ID with the signature page 3. If those don't work, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 If you need this resolved quickly for your housing deposit deadline, make sure to contact your financial aid office directly. They can often issue a preliminary aid package pending signature completion.

Thank you! We'll try the incognito window right now. We did call the aid office but they said their hands are tied until the FAFSA is complete. Would getting the FSA office to send some kind of confirmation email help?

I've helped dozens of families with this exact signature issue. It's usually related to the account verification process rather than the signature itself. Make sure your son's FSA ID is fully verified - sometimes there's a pending verification that's not obvious in the interface. The most reliable solution is actually to print the signature page (there should be a PDF option), physically sign it, and mail it to the address provided on the form. Yes, it's old school, but it bypasses the electronic signature system entirely and works 100% of the time. Just make sure to use certified mail so you can track it.

I had no idea we could mail in a physical signature! That's such a relief - we'll do that as a backup plan if the electronic attempts don't work. Is there a specific form we need to include with the signature page?

Ugh, FAFSA is the WORST. I couldn't sign my application for like 2 weeks and almost missed all my deadlines. Try signing out completely, then go to studentaid.gov directly (not through any email links), sign in fresh, and look for the "Missing Signatures" section under the FAFSA form status. Sometimes the direct link works when the email link doesn't.

Thank you! I'll have him try that approach too. It's so frustrating that they make this process so complicated!

I had the EXACT same problem!!!! The signature button was grayed out for me too!! After trying for days I fixed it by signing out, clearing my browser history and then creating a NEW fafsa application and just redoing the whole thing. I know it's annoying but at least it worked! 🤷‍♀️

Oh no, I was hoping we wouldn't have to redo the entire application! But if nothing else works, at least we know this is an option. Thanks for sharing what worked for you!

I worked for a college financial aid office for 5 years before retiring, and this signature issue happens every year with the FAFSA. It's particularly bad with this new system. What most people don't realize is that there are TWO separate signatures required - one to create the FSA ID and another to actually sign the FAFSA application itself. Often the confirmation screen doesn't make it clear whether both signatures are complete. Having trouble reaching the FSA? I discovered this service called Claimyr that can get you connected to a live FAFSA agent without the ridiculous hold times. Check out their demo video: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ and website at claimyr.com. A colleague recommended it after spending hours trying to reach someone about a different FAFSA issue. Much better than waiting on hold for hours only to get disconnected!

Thank you for explaining the two signatures! I bet that's exactly what's happening. We'll double-check both signature requirements. And thanks for the Claimyr recommendation - after three disconnected calls today, I'm definitely going to try it. Anything to avoid more hours on hold!

Has anyone tried the "Request Professional Help" button directly on the FAFSA signature page? I found it hidden in the bottom corner when I had a similar issue. It connects you to technical support specifically for signature issues rather than the general helpline. They resolved my daughter's signature problem in about 10 minutes once I finally found that option.

I didn't see any "Request Professional Help" button, but I'll have my son look for it tonight. That sounds exactly like what we need! Where exactly on the page did you find it?

Update on the signature issue: if you're still having problems, the Department of Education just released a workaround yesterday. You need to: 1. Log in to studentaid.gov 2. Go to My Documents 3. Select "FAFSA Signature Exception" 4. Upload a photo of a handwritten signature along with a photo of the student's ID This temporary measure was implemented because of widespread signature page issues with the 2025-2026 form. Thought you should know about this official alternative.

This is incredibly helpful! We'll try this method tonight. Thank you so much for sharing this update - I wish the FAFSA website would make these workarounds more obvious!

sooo did any of this stuff work?? my brother has the same problem now lol

Yes! We used the signature exception upload method from the My Documents section and it worked! The application was processed within 3 days after that. Tell your brother to try that method first - it was the easiest solution.
