FAFSA showing 'Needs Signature' after processing - how do we sign it?
Just finished my son's 2025-2026 FAFSA application last week and got an email saying it was processed. When we logged in today, there's a message saying we still need to sign it? I thought we already signed everything when we submitted! The status shows 'Action Required: Signature' but I'm completely lost on how to actually sign it now. Is there a specific page I need to go to? Do we both need to sign again? His SAI calculation isn't showing up yet and I'm worried we'll miss priority deadlines if we don't fix this soon.

same thing happend to me!! such a headache. you have to go back into the fafsa and there should be a section where both parent and student electronically sign. both of you need your FSA IDs

•Thanks for responding! I went back in but I'm not seeing anywhere specific to sign. Is it at the end of the application or somewhere else? I definitely have our FSA IDs ready.

This is a common issue with the new FAFSA system. When you log into studentaid.gov, you need to go to the "FAFSA Form" section, select the 2025-2026 application, and then click on "View or Print Your FAFSA Form." From there, you should see a section near the end labeled "Sign and Submit" with a prompt for signatures. Both you and your son need to sign with your respective FSA IDs for the application to be fully processed. If the signature page isn't showing up, try clearing your browser cache and cookies or using a different browser entirely. Sometimes the new system has display issues.

•Thank you! I'll try those steps right now. I was looking at the dashboard summary and didn't see that we needed to actually go back into the form itself. Makes sense why I was confused.

•No problem! Just make sure both you and your son complete the signature process. Your son needs to sign with his own FSA ID, and you need to sign with yours. Once both signatures are submitted, the application should update to "Processing" and eventually to "Processed" with the SAI calculation available.

my daughter and I had this exact issue!!! the new FAFSA system is sooooo frustrating. when we finished filing we thought we signed everything too but got the same message. turns out we both needed to sign AGAIN at the end. the whole thing is poorly designed if you ask me.

•It's nice to know we're not alone in being confused by this! Did you eventually figure it out? How long did it take for your SAI to show up after you both signed?

•it took about 3 days after we both signed for the SAI to show up. honestly the whole process is ridiculous. my daughter's school almost missed her for priority consideration because of this signing nonsense!

I had to call the Federal Student Aid Information Center because we had the EXACT same problem. Was on hold for 2 hours and then got disconnected TWICE. Finally got through on the third try after waiting another hour. They told me we had to go back to the last page of the FAFSA form and there should be a signature box for both the parent and student that we missed somehow. Apparently lots of people are having this issue with the new system.

•The phone wait times with FSA are absolutely ridiculous right now. I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Saved me so much frustration with the signature issue, since the agent was able to walk me through exactly which page I needed to be on. Worth it for peace of mind, especially with deadlines coming up.

•Thanks for the tip! If I can't figure it out from the instructions above, I'll definitely look into that. I've tried calling twice already and couldn't get through.

Just to clarify something important that others haven't mentioned - there's a difference between creating your FSA ID (which you need to start the application) and the actual legal signature at the end of the FAFSA form. Many people think they've signed because they entered their FSA ID at the beginning, but the legal signature comes at the end after all the data is entered. To find the signature page: 1. Log in to studentaid.gov 2. Click on "Complete the FAFSA Form" 3. Select the 2025-2026 form 4. Click "Log In to Continue" if prompted 5. You'll see a summary of your application with different sections 6. Click on the last section - usually called "Sign and Submit" 7. Both you and your son will need to provide signatures there After both signatures are complete, it typically takes 3-5 business days for the SAI to be calculated and displayed in your account.

•Wow, thank you for those detailed steps! You're right - I think I was confusing the FSA ID login with the actual signature. I'll follow these instructions exactly.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU FAIL!!! I went through the EXACT same thing with my twins' applications and almost missed out on $12,000 in grants because of this stupid signature issue. The financial aid office at their college had to help us fix it because the website is so badly designed. They said over 40% of all applications this year have this problem! It's CRIMINAL how they've made this process so complicated!!

•omg yes!! this new system is the worst! i heard they spent millions redesigning it and somehow made it MORE confusing than before??

•EXACTLY!! They spent $121 MILLION on this "simplified" system and it's a DISASTER! My friend works in a college financial aid office and said they're absolutely DROWNING in panicked calls from families about these signature issues. And don't even get me started on how they calculate the new SAI compared to the old EFC - whole different nightmare!!!

UPDATE: I followed the advice here and was finally able to find the signature section! It was under the "Log back in" option, then going to the last section called "Sign & Submit." Both my son and I had to create new signatures using our FSA IDs. We're now showing "Processing" status, so fingers crossed the SAI shows up soon. Thank you all for the help - would have been completely lost without your guidance!

•Great to hear you got it sorted out! Yes, the new system can be confusing. For anyone else reading this in the future, always make sure both the parent and student complete that final signature step. Your SAI should appear within 3-5 business days, and then colleges will be able to access your information to create financial aid packages.

•Make sure you SCREENSHOT everything!!! I learned the hard way that even after signatures, things can still go wrong. Keep records of confirmation numbers and completion dates in case anything goes missing later!

So glad you got it figured out! I'm dealing with the same issue right now with my daughter's FAFSA. The new system is definitely confusing - I've been staring at the dashboard for days wondering where the signature section was. Thanks to everyone who shared the step-by-step instructions here. It's crazy that something as basic as signing the form is so hard to find. Going to try logging back in and looking for that "Sign & Submit" section now. Fingers crossed our SAI shows up quickly too since we're getting close to some scholarship deadlines!

•You're definitely not alone - this new FAFSA system has been such a nightmare for so many families! I just went through the exact same thing last week. The key thing that helped me was understanding that the "Sign & Submit" section is actually a separate step from just logging in with your FSA ID. Make sure both you and your daughter complete that final signature step together - it won't let you proceed if only one person signs. Also, don't panic if it takes a few days for the status to update after signing. The system seems to be running slower than usual this year. Good luck with those scholarship deadlines!

This is such a relief to read! I've been pulling my hair out for the past two days trying to figure out this signature issue with my son's FAFSA. We submitted everything last month and got the processing confirmation, but then saw that dreaded "Action Required: Signature" message when we checked the status. I was starting to panic thinking we'd have to restart the entire application! The step-by-step instructions from Mason Stone are exactly what I needed - I had no idea there was a separate "Sign & Submit" section at the end. Going to log in right now and get both of our signatures completed. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences, it really helps to know this is such a widespread issue and not something we did wrong!

•You're absolutely not alone in this frustration! I'm a newcomer here but dealing with the exact same signature nightmare right now. It's honestly ridiculous that they redesigned this system and made something as basic as signing so confusing. I've been going in circles for hours trying to find where to actually complete the signatures. Thank you for mentioning Mason Stone's step-by-step instructions - I'm going to follow those exactly. It's such a relief to see that so many other families are experiencing this same issue. Makes me feel less like I'm completely incompetent with technology! Hoping we both get our SAI calculations soon and can move forward with financial aid packages.

As a newcomer to this community, I'm so grateful to have found this thread! I'm currently dealing with this exact same signature issue with my daughter's 2025-2026 FAFSA. We completed and submitted everything three weeks ago, got the processing confirmation email, but when I logged in yesterday there was that confusing "Action Required: Signature" message. I honestly thought we had already signed everything when we first submitted! Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful - especially Mason Stone's detailed step-by-step instructions. It's both frustrating and reassuring to see that this is such a widespread problem with the new system. I had no idea there was a difference between using your FSA ID to log in and the actual legal signature at the end of the form. Going to follow those exact steps tonight when my daughter gets home from school so we can both complete the signature process together. Really hoping our SAI shows up within that 3-5 day timeframe since we have some early scholarship deadlines approaching. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and solutions - this community is a lifesaver!

•Welcome to the community! You've definitely come to the right place for help with this frustrating FAFSA signature issue. I'm also new here and just went through this exact same problem last week with my son's application. It's honestly mind-boggling how confusing they've made something as simple as signing a form! Mason Stone's instructions really are the key - I was making the same mistake of thinking my FSA ID login was the signature. Make sure you and your daughter are both there when you do the final "Sign & Submit" section since you'll both need to complete it at the same time. Also, don't worry if the status doesn't update immediately after signing - mine took about 24 hours to change from "Action Required" to "Processing." Good luck with those scholarship deadlines! It's such a relief to know we're all in this together with this new system.
