FAFSA appeals submitted 3 weeks ago still stuck in 'Being Reviewed' status - normal wait time?

I submitted FAFSA appeals for both my twins on May 8th (almost three weeks ago) due to our family income dropping significantly this year. The studentaid.gov website just shows 'Financial Aid Application Being Reviewed' with that generic message about 'being evaluated by the Financial Aid office.' No changes for weeks. This is really stressing me out because orientation is in July and we need to know about aid before then! The financial aid office said they can't do anything until the appeals are processed. Is this normal? How long did YOUR appeals take? Anyone actually get theirs processed yet this year?

I work in financial aid at a community college, and unfortunately, FAFSA appeals are taking much longer this year than in previous cycles. The new FAFSA rollout has created massive backlogs at almost every institution and at Federal Student Aid. Three weeks is actually pretty standard right now - I've seen appeals taking 4-6 weeks to process. The system is overwhelmed with the transition to the new SAI formula and all the verification changes. My advice would be to contact your daughters' financial aid offices directly and ask if there's any preliminary information they can provide while waiting for the official appeal results.

Thanks for the insider perspective. We've called their aid office twice now and they just say 'we can't do anything until the appeals are processed.' It's so frustrating because we need to make decisions soon about how much we can afford!

Ugh that's even worse! Have you tried calling the Federal Student Aid hotline? I'm thinking about doing that tomorrow.

I submitted an appeal for my son in early April after my husband lost his job, and it finally got processed last week (so about 6 weeks total). The financial aid office ended up adjusting his SAI from 14,568 to 3,200, which qualified him for a much larger aid package. The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking, but they do eventually get to it. I'd recommend documenting everything about your change in income circumstances in case they request additional verification when they finally review your case. Have paystubs, termination letters, or whatever documents support your appeal ready to go.

Six weeks?! That's terrifying. But at least you got a substantial adjustment. Thanks for sharing your actual numbers - gives me hope that it might be worth the wait. Did they request additional documents after the initial appeal submission?

i filed an appeal back in march and it took 7 weeks!!! and then they asked for more documentation which reset the clock and took another 3 weeks. so frustrating. this new FAFSA system is a disaster if u ask me.

You're absolutely right about the delays. The new FAFSA system was well-intentioned with the simplified formula, but the implementation has been challenging for everyone. Always prepare for additional document requests, as they're happening more frequently with appeals this cycle.

Have you tried calling the FSA directly? Sometimes they can expedite things if you explain your situation. Good luck!

I tried calling twice but couldn't get through - just got the automated system and then it disconnected me after 45 minutes on hold. Did you have success getting through to them?

I was in the same boat last month trying to reach someone at FSA about my appeal status. After wasting hours on hold and getting disconnected, I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual FSA agent in under 20 minutes. They basically hold your place in line and call you when an agent is available. Saved me so much time and frustration! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The agent I spoke with was able to see my appeal status and gave me an estimated timeline. Worth considering if you're desperate for answers.

I used Claimyr too after reading about it here. It actually does work - got me through to an FSA rep who could tell me exactly where my son's appeal was in the queue and what was causing the delay. Saved me from constant worrying.

I'm going to try this tomorrow. At this point I just need SOME information about where we stand in the process. Thanks for the recommendation!

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!!! My daughter's appeal has been "under review" for TWO MONTHS and school starts in August!!! How are families supposed to plan?? We can't take out loans until we know if the appeal works! This is the WORST FAFSA rollout in history and nobody seems to care that REAL FAMILIES are suffering!!!!

I understand your frustration completely. The delays are affecting thousands of families nationwide. While it doesn't solve the immediate problem, I recommend keeping documentation of all communications with the aid office and FSA. If you end up needing to make enrollment deposits before aid is finalized, make sure to communicate with the school's billing office about your pending appeal situation. Some institutions have payment plan options that can buy you some time.

That's a huge difference in your SAI! Congrats! I'm definitely going to be more proactive about following up now. Did you contact both the school's aid office and FSA directly?

Just wondering but what reason did you use for the appeal? Job loss or something else? I'm considering filing one too

In our case, my husband's hours were cut by almost 50% this year, so our income is way lower than what was reported on our 2023 taxes. The financial aid counselor said that definitely qualifies as a valid appeal reason. If you have any significant change in financial circumstances, it's worth appealing!

I'm in a similar situation with my appeal taking forever! Filed mine about 4 weeks ago due to my spouse's job loss and still showing "Being Reviewed" status. Reading everyone's experiences here makes me feel less alone but also more anxious about the timeline. Has anyone had luck with contacting their school's financial aid office for any kind of interim guidance while waiting? I'm worried about missing enrollment deadlines while we wait for the appeal to process. The whole system really does seem overwhelmed this year compared to when my older daughter went through this process 3 years ago.
