How long after FAFSA submission until we get our SAI results?

My husband and I just finished submitting our twins' FAFSA applications last weekend and now we're wondering about the timeline. The studentaid.gov site just says 'processing' but doesn't give any indication of how long this will take. Our high school counselor mentioned something about 3-7 days, but I'm seeing posts online about weeks or even months? Our twins are applying to schools with February 15 priority deadlines, so I'm getting anxious. Has anyone who submitted in January 2025 already received their Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation? What's the normal timeframe we should expect before we see results and can send them to colleges?

Submitted ours Jan 3rd, got SAI back on Jan 9th. Not bad.

Wow, that's only 6 days! Did you do anything special to get such a quick turnaround? We submitted on the 12th and it's still processing...

The official timeline from Federal Student Aid is 3-5 business days for processing a completed FAFSA application, but that's just the ideal scenario. In reality, it can take anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks depending on several factors: 1. Whether your application was selected for verification 2. The current application volume they're handling 3. If there were any data mismatches between your reported information and IRS records January is typically high volume since many schools have February priority deadlines. If you don't see your SAI within 7-10 business days, I'd recommend contacting Federal Student Aid directly. Your twins' colleges won't need the information immediately after the priority deadline - schools typically continue processing financial aid for several weeks after their deadlines.

Wait, I thought colleges couldn't see your FAFSA info until after you get your SAI? And don't they start making decisions right after the deadline? My daughter's still waiting for her SAI from early January and I'm freaking out that she's going to miss scholarship opportunities!

You're partially right - schools can't access your complete FAFSA information until your SAI is calculated. However, most colleges don't finalize financial aid packages immediately after priority deadlines. They typically allow a 2-3 week grace period for FAFSA processing delays. If your daughter submitted in early January and still hasn't received her SAI, I'd definitely recommend contacting Federal Student Aid directly. This is longer than the typical processing time, even during high-volume periods.

We've been waiting over THREE WEEKS and still nothing!! I've tried calling FSA six times and either get disconnected or am told the wait is over 2 hours. This is the most frustrating process ever. Our daughter's top choice has a Feb 1 deadline and I'm seriously worried they're going to deny her aid because of the FAFSA delays. The whole system is completely broken!!

I was in the same position last week - super frustrated with the wait times. Someone recommended I use Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a FAFSA agent without the ridiculous wait. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. I was skeptical but checked out their demo video (https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ) and decided to try it. Actually worked - got through to someone who explained my application had a verification flag that was causing the delay. They helped clear it up and we got our SAI three days later.

Seriously?? I've never heard of that before. I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Did they actually resolve your issue or just tell you what was wrong?

They actually resolved it! The agent saw that there was a mismatch between what we reported for income and what the IRS data showed (turned out I accidentally transposed two numbers). She cleared the flag after verifying my identity and the correct info. Without getting through to someone, we would have been waiting indefinitely with no idea what was wrong.

Financial aid counselor here. Processing times vary significantly during peak periods, but here's what you should know about the 2025-2026 FAFSA timeline: • Standard processing: 3-5 business days • January/February (peak season): 7-14 business days • Applications flagged for verification: Additional 1-3 weeks If you're approaching a school's priority deadline and still don't have your SAI, take these steps: 1. Contact each school's financial aid office and explain the situation - most have procedures for FAFSA processing delays 2. Keep documentation of your FAFSA submission date (screenshot of confirmation) 3. Contact Federal Student Aid if it's been more than 10 business days One important note: Schools don't immediately finalize aid packages after their deadlines. There's typically a 2-3 week processing period where late-arriving FAFSAs are still considered for full aid eligibility. Many schools are aware of the processing delays this year and have adjusted their internal timelines accordingly.

Thank you for this detailed information! It's really helpful to understand the expected timeframes. If we submitted on January 12th, would you recommend waiting until the end of this week before contacting Federal Student Aid? And is there any way to check if our application has been flagged for verification, or will we only find that out when we finally get results?

Yes, I'd wait until you've hit the 10 business day mark (which would be around January 26th) before contacting FSA. Unfortunately, there's no way to check if your application has been flagged for verification until you either receive your SAI or contact FSA directly. The studentaid.gov portal simply shows "processing" regardless of status. If you're concerned about meeting school deadlines, I'd recommend proactively emailing the financial aid offices at your twins' priority schools to notify them you've submitted the FAFSA and are awaiting processing. Most schools are understanding of these delays, especially if you communicate with them in advance of their deadlines.

my sons fasfa took 8 days in december but my daughters took almost 3 weeks in january. same household info for both just different colleges. its all about timing i think. more people apply in january because of deadlines so system gets backed up. dont worry about the feb 15 deadline, you should be fine unless theres an error they need to fix.

That's reassuring to hear! Did your daughter's colleges have any issues with her FAFSA arriving closer to their deadlines? I'm worried about our twins missing out on merit scholarships if their SAI doesn't come through soon enough.

no problems at all. the schools told her they know fafsa is running slow this year. one financial aid office actually told her they dont even start putting together aid packages until late february even tho their deadline was feb 1. as long as you submitted before the deadline your fine. they just want to know your committed to going through the process.

This whole FASFA thing is such a headache lol! My cousin's son got his back in like 2 days last week but my nephew has been waiting for over a month. Makes zero sense.

There's actually a logical explanation for those timing differences. Applications go through an automated review process that flags certain applications for manual verification. Common triggers include: - Discrepancies between reported income and IRS data - Changes in financial situation from previous years - Random selection (yes, some are just randomly selected) - Unusual household situations Applications with no verification flags can process in 2-3 days, while those requiring verification will take much longer. If your nephew has been waiting a month, he should definitely contact FSA directly as that's beyond the normal timeline even for verification.

My daughter's took 11 days in January. Friend's kid was 4 days. Another friend has been waiting for 3+ weeks. It seems completely random honestly.

Anyone know if they automatically notify you when there's a problem?? Or do they just leave your application sitting there forever? I feel like mine is just lost in some digital black hole and no one will ever look at it...

They're supposed to email you if there's an issue requiring your attention, but those notifications aren't always reliable. If you've been waiting more than 2 weeks, I'd recommend being proactive and contacting FSA directly. One common issue this year is verification flags not triggering proper notifications. Some applicants only discover they're selected for verification after calling to check on their delayed application status. Another tip: Check your spam/junk folders regularly. I've had many students discover their FAFSA notifications were filtered out of their primary inbox.

Just wanted to share our experience to help ease some anxiety - we submitted our daughter's FAFSA on January 15th and got the SAI back yesterday (January 27th), so exactly 12 days including weekends. No verification issues, thankfully! I was really stressed about her February 1st deadline at her top choice school, but I called their financial aid office last week and they said they're used to FAFSA delays and won't penalize students as long as the application was submitted before the deadline. They even mentioned they've extended their internal processing timeline this year specifically because of the volume delays everyone's experiencing. For anyone still waiting - hang in there! The schools really do seem to understand what's happening with processing times right now.
