DoE initiated FAFSA correction on 4/28 but no SAI calculation yet - stuck in limbo
Super confused about what's happening with my FAFSA right now. The Dept of Education apparently started their own correction to my application (I didn't ask for this!) back on 4/28, and it shows as 'processed' but we STILL don't have an SAI calculation after nearly 3 weeks. The website doesn't flag anything for me to fix and just shows 'processed' status. Has anyone else had the DoE randomly initiate corrections? How long did it take to get your SAI after that? My college financial aid office says they can't move forward without the SAI, and fall semester deposits are due soon. I've tried calling FSA 6 times with no luck getting through!

This happened to me too! The Department of Education initiated an automatic correction on my daughter's FAFSA in early March, and it took exactly 14 business days from that point to receive the SAI calculation. The DoE is doing this for many applications this year as part of their enhanced verification process. If it's been more than 14 business days (which it sounds like it has for you), you should definitely try to reach someone at Federal Student Aid. The most common reasons for these self-initiated corrections are income verification discrepancies or citizenship verification issues.

•Thanks for the info! Yeah it's been 15 business days now. Did you have to do anything special to get them to finish processing it, or did it just suddenly appear one day? I'm getting really anxious because my school keeps sending me warnings about missing the aid deadline.

•A MONTH?? Omg I can't wait that long. Did your brother ever figure out what triggered the correction in the first place?

•nope! they never said. just randomly showed up as 'processed' one day and then like 3 weeks later his SAI appeared. the whole systems a mess this year

The Department initiates these corrections when there's a mismatch between your reported information and their internal records (usually tax data). Since it's already been processed on 4/28, you should have received your SAI by now. This is absolutely a situation where you need to speak with an FSA representative directly. Have you tried using Claimyr to get through the phone lines? I was in a similar situation and used their service at claimyr.com - they managed to get me connected to an agent within 20 minutes after I'd spent days trying on my own. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The agent I spoke with was able to manually review my application and release the SAI calculation that same day.

•I've never heard of Claimyr before - is it legitimate? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Did you have to explain anything specific to the agent to get them to release the SAI?

•Yes, it's legitimate - they just help you get through the phone queue. When you talk to the agent, make sure to mention: 1) The specific date the DoE correction was processed (4/28), 2) That it's been over 14 business days with no SAI calculation, 3) That your school needs the SAI urgently for financial aid packaging. Be polite but firm that you need this resolved immediately. The agent should be able to see what's causing the delay in their system.

This is part of the disaster that is the 2024-25 FAFSA rollout. DoE has been initiating corrections on thousands of applications due to various data issues. In most cases, these corrections are related to mismatched IRS data or citizenship verification problems. The standard processing time after corrections should be 3-5 business days for an SAI calculation, but we're seeing widespread delays of 2-4 weeks due to system backlogs. I work in a college financial aid office, and we're telling students to: 1. Check if your Student Aid Index (SAI) appears on the confirmation page in your FAFSA (not just the processed date) 2. Verify if ISIR data has been sent to your schools (call the financial aid office) 3. Contact FSA directly if it's been more than 10 business days Many schools are extending financial aid deadlines because of these widespread issues, so contact your financial aid office immediately and explain the situation. They may be able to offer you a provisional aid package or extension.

•Thank you for this detailed response! I checked my confirmation page and definitely no SAI showing there. I'll call my school's financial aid office tomorrow to see if they've received any ISIR data. Is there anything specific I should mention to them to explain the situation?

•Just tell them exactly what you shared here - that DoE initiated a correction on 4/28, it shows as processed, but no SAI has appeared. Ask if they've received any ISIR data for you at all. Many schools are creating workarounds for students in this situation, including conditional aid offers or deadline extensions. The key phrase to use is "DoE-initiated correction delay" - they'll understand what you mean.

OMG the EXACT same thing happened to my application!! The correction came out of nowhere and now ive been waiting FIVE WEEKS with no SAI!!! My school is threatening to give away my housing if I dont pay the deposit but I cant get my financail package without the stupid SAI!!! This whole FAFSA system is completely BROKEN. I tried calling 12 times and either get disconnected or told the wait is over 2 hours. This is ridiculous!!!

•Five weeks? That's completely unacceptable. Have you tried reaching out to your congressional representative's office? They often have staff dedicated to helping constituents with federal agency issues like this. Many students have gotten quick resolution through this route when all else fails.

I had this happen with my son's FAFSA. Department of Education correction showed up randomly, then nothing for weeks. Turned out they were verifying our citizenship status even though we're all citizens born here. I finally got through to someone after a 3 hour wait on the phone and they manually pushed it through. His SAI showed up the next day. The agent said they're dealing with a huge backlog of these auto-corrections and many are just sitting in the system waiting for review. Keep calling until you get through.

•3 hours on hold?! That's insane. Did they tell you why the citizenship verification was triggered in the first place? I'm worried there might be some issue with my application that I don't even know about.

•They said it was completely random - part of their enhanced verification process this year. Something about the new FAFSA system flagging applications that meet certain criteria. The agent couldn't tell me the specific criteria, just that it wasn't because we did anything wrong. Such a frustrating process!

Just a quick update for everyone experiencing this issue - the Department of Education announced yesterday that they're dedicating additional resources to clear the backlog of SAI calculations for applications with self-initiated corrections. They're prioritizing applications where the correction was processed more than 10 business days ago, so you should see movement soon. You can check the FSA social media accounts for the announcement.

•That's actually good news! Just checked their Twitter and saw the announcement. Hopefully this means mine will be processed soon without me having to spend hours trying to get through on the phone.

My daughter had this issue last month and what worked for us was going back into the FAFSA and clicking "Make FAFSA Correction" even though there wasn't anything to correct. We just went through each page, didn't change anything, and resubmitted. Somehow this "pushed" the application through the system and her SAI showed up 2 days later. Might be worth trying!

•That's a really interesting workaround! I'm a bit nervous about making any changes since the DoE already initiated their own correction, but at this point I might try anything. Did you have to re-sign with the FSA ID when you resubmitted?

•Yes, both my daughter and I had to re-sign with our FSA IDs even though we didn't make any actual changes. I think that's what triggered the system to take another look at the application. It was completely stuck before that.
