Completely unrelated but make sure you also check if any of her schools require the CSS Profile in addition to FAFSA! My daughter almost missed out on institutional scholarships because we didn't realize some private colleges require both forms. The CSS Profile has different deadlines too.
Quick update on this topic: The Department of Education recently announced they're working to speed up FAFSA processing times. If schools haven't received your daughter's information within 7-10 days of submission, I'd definitely recommend contacting both the schools and FSA directly. Many schools are also extending their financial aid deadlines to accommodate FAFSA delays this year, so don't panic quite yet!
Has anyone found any clear information about how they calculate the SAI with parental assets? I know they have some kind of protection allowance, but the numbers I'm seeing online are from previous years. Our family has some savings for emergencies and my mom is worried it will prevent me from getting any aid at all.
Yes, there's a protection allowance for parents' assets in the SAI formula. For 2025-2026, parents' assets are assessed on a sliding scale starting at 12% above the protection amount. The protection amount varies based on the parents' age and whether they're married or single. Roughly, if your parents are in their 40s-50s, the protection amount is around $10,500 for single parents and $21,000 for married parents (these numbers adjust annually). Assets above that amount only count partially against your aid eligibility. Definitely don't empty savings accounts - the formula is designed to protect reasonable emergency savings.
Update: I just found another really useful section on the site that explains the differences between the SAI and old EFC calculations. For those confused about the changes, there's a whole comparison chart at studentaid.gov/help-center/answers/topic/fafsa/article/sai-vs-efc that breaks it down. Apparently some types of income are treated completely differently now!
Just to clarify about deadlines - the FAFSA processing delay doesn't count against your submission deadline. As long as you submit the completed FAFSA by your school's priority deadline, you're fine. The system records your initial parent submission date as the starting timestamp. One other thing to check: make sure your students are using the correct website. For 2025-2026 FAFSA, they need to use studentaid.gov and click on "Complete the FAFSA Form" - not the old fafsa.ed.gov site that some school portals might still link to. Once everything is working, the student portions should take about 20-30 minutes each to complete if they have their tax info ready (if they filed) or their W-2s if they worked but didn't file taxes.
That's such a relief about the deadline! And thanks for the tip about the website - I'm going to send them both the exact link to make sure they're going to the right place. My son worked part-time but didn't file taxes, so he'll need his W-2. My daughter didn't work so hers should be quicker. Fingers crossed we can get this finished this weekend!
Based on the thread, it sounds like you're on the right track now! To summarize the solution: 1. Wait the full 48-72 hours for processing after parent contribution submission 2. Ensure both students have verified their FSA IDs (email and phone) 3. Have students use different devices than what you used for the parent portion 4. Clear browser cache/cookies before attempting login 5. Use studentaid.gov directly One additional tip: For the 2025-2026 FAFSA, the system calculates the Student Aid Index (SAI) which replaced the old EFC. This calculation happens after ALL portions are complete, so don't worry if you don't see an SAI number until everything is submitted. The SAI calculation can take an additional 3-5 business days after final submission. Good luck with finishing both applications!
Thank you for the summary! We're going to follow all these steps this weekend. I didn't know about the SAI replacing the EFC - this is our first time with the new FAFSA system. I'll make sure to tell the kids it might take a few more days to see their aid eligibility after submission. This forum has been so helpful!

when I filled out my FASFA last november it also showed a weird number before I finished everything but then changed completely when I submitted all the W-2 info so dont worry about it yet

UPDATE: Finally reached someone at FSA after trying for three days! They confirmed it's just a provisional calculation based on the minimal info we provided. The agent said to ignore it completely and that our real SAI will be calculated once we finish the application with our tax information. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Glad you got confirmation! This is something FSA should really clarify in their system to avoid confusion for thousands of families.
