Accidentally reported grandparent 529 plan on FAFSA - how to remove it now?

I'm freaking out because we just submitted our FAFSA last week and realized we made a huge mistake. My in-laws have a 529 plan for our daughter that we accidentally reported as an asset on her FAFSA application. I just read that grandparent-owned 529s should NOT be reported on the FAFSA at all! Now I'm worried this will drastically increase our SAI and reduce her aid package. When I log into studentaid.gov, I don't see any option to edit the submitted form. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? Is there a correction process or do we need to start over with a whole new application? Our daughter's first choice school has a priority deadline in 3 weeks so we need to fix this ASAP!

You can definitely fix this! The FAFSA does have a correction process. Go to studentaid.gov and log in with your FSA ID. Look for the "Make FAFSA Corrections" option. You should be able to update the asset information there. Just make sure both you and your daughter re-sign the form electronically after making the change.

Thank you so much for responding! I looked everywhere on the site and couldn't find the "Make FAFSA Corrections" option. Is it somewhere specific? I only see options to view the submitted form but nothing about editing it.

we did the SAME THING last yr!! the grandparnt 529 thing is confusing bc it used to count but doesn't now with the new FAFSA. ended up having to call FSA directly to fix it. took FOREVER to get thru to someone tho

Oh no, how long did it take to get it fixed once you reached someone? I'm worried about missing deadlines!

The correction option should become available about 3-5 business days after submission. If you've just submitted last week, it might not be available yet. The system needs to process your initial submission before allowing corrections. Keep checking back daily. And don't panic too much - if you absolutely can't get it fixed in time, remember you can always submit a special circumstances form directly to each college's financial aid office explaining the error. Most schools are understanding about these situations, especially with the new FAFSA causing so much confusion.

That's a relief! I'll keep checking for the correction option. Do you know if colleges automatically recalculate the SAI once corrections are processed, or do we need to notify them?

I went through this last month and the correction button NEVER showed up for me! Super frustrating. Had to call FSA over and over again. Tried for a week straight and kept getting disconnected after waiting for hours. Eventually I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they have this system that waits on hold for you then calls when an agent picks up. Saved me so much time. There's a video demo if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ When I finally got through, the agent was able to make the correction on their end. Just make sure you have all your information ready when they connect you.

I was going to suggest claimyr too!!! used it last week when my son's account got locked. the fsa hold times are RIDICULOUS right now with all the new fafsa problems

Correct - with the new FAFSA Simplification Act, grandparent-owned 529 plans no longer need to be reported as assets on the FAFSA and distributions don't count as untaxed income to the student. This is a big positive change that started with the 2024-2025 FAFSA. Only parent-owned 529 plans need to be reported as parental assets (which still have a more favorable treatment than student assets).

The stupied new FASFA is so broken. I've had to try fixing 3 different issues already. My daughter got locked out becuz they couldn't verify her identity even tho she already HAD an FSA ID from last year. Then they didnt let me add my W-2 right. Now our SAI is way higher than expected. Whole thing is a disaster and nobody at dept of ed seems to care. why even bother trying to fix stuff when they'll probably mess up your SAI calculation anyway???

While the new system has problems, it's still worth fixing errors like reporting a grandparent 529. That single correction could potentially lower their SAI by thousands depending on the account value. I understand your frustration though - my family had similar identity verification issues that took weeks to resolve.

To answer your follow-up question - yes, colleges will automatically receive the updated information once your correction is processed. The system sends them the corrected SAI calculation. You don't need to notify them about the correction itself, but if you're concerned about deadlines, it doesn't hurt to email the financial aid offices at your daughter's schools explaining that you've submitted a correction and when you did so. Documentation of your timeline could be helpful if they make decisions before the correction is fully processed.

Thank you so much for all your help! I'll definitely email the schools if the correction takes too long to process. Do you know roughly how long corrections take to be reflected in the system once submitted?

Correction processing times vary, but currently expect 7-10 business days for the correction to be fully processed. After that, it can take another 3-5 days for schools to receive the updated information. Given your 3-week deadline, I'd recommend: 1. Check daily for the correction option to appear 2. If it's not available by the end of this week, call FSA directly 3. Send a brief email to each school's financial aid office explaining the situation Most schools understand these issues, especially this year with all the FAFSA changes causing confusion.

Perfect plan, thank you! I'll start checking for the correction option today and prepare an email for the schools just in case. You've been incredibly helpful and I feel much less anxious about this now.
