FAFSA accidentally submitted too early - can't make investment account corrections?
I'm totally freaking out right now. My daughter started her 2025-2026 FAFSA on December 5th, but was waiting for me and my husband to complete our part. When we finished our section, I accidentally hit submit thinking she had finished everything on her end! Turns out she hadn't added a custodial investment account (about $34,000) from her grandparents that she needed to report. I talked to her school counselor who said just delete the application and redo it, but when my daughter tried that, the system wouldn't let her. She called the Federal Student Aid helpline and the person told her she can't make changes and needs to contact EACH school individually to update them about the missing investment account. This sounds completely wrong to me! There HAS to be a way to correct a FAFSA after submission, especially since we just submitted it last week. Does she really need to call her top 5 schools and explain this mistake? Has anyone dealt with this? What's the right way to handle FAFSA corrections for unreported assets?

Whoever told your daughter she can't make changes doesn't know what they're talking about. You absolutely CAN make corrections to a submitted FAFSA. Login to studentaid.gov, click on the 2025-26 application, and there should be a "Make FAFSA Corrections" button. The only catch is sometimes it takes 3-5 business days after submission before the correction option becomes available.

•Thank you so much! We'll check again in a couple days. The rep on the phone was so certain we couldn't change it that I was starting to panic.

•That's such a relief to hear! Did submitting the correction change your SAI dramatically?

The FAFSA customer service representatives often give conflicting information. According to the official FSA guidelines, you can make corrections to the FAFSA after submission. Here's the process: 1. Wait 3-7 days for your application to fully process 2. Log in to studentaid.gov with your student's FSA ID 3. Select the 2025-2026 FAFSA from the dashboard 4. Look for the "Make FAFSA Correction" option 5. Update the student assets section to include the custodial investment account 6. Re-sign and resubmit If for some reason the correction option doesn't appear after a week, then contacting the schools would be the next step, but that's definitely not the first solution.

•Thank you for the detailed instructions! This makes me feel much better. Do you know if making this correction will trigger any kind of verification flag or delay?

•Making corrections doesn't automatically trigger verification, but significant changes to financial information can sometimes increase the chances. That said, it's much better to correct the information than to leave it incorrect. Verification is just a standard process where you provide documentation - not a penalty.

I've been trying to reach the FSA helpline for 3 days about a similar issue - it's absolutely ridiculous how difficult it is to get through to them! After waiting on hold for 2+ hours twice, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get a callback instead of waiting on hold. They were able to connect me with a FAFSA agent who confirmed that you CAN make corrections as others have mentioned. There's a video of how their service works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Anyway, the agent explained that there's a processing period before corrections can be made, usually 3-7 days. They also mentioned that if the correction button doesn't appear after 7 days, you should call back because there might be a system flag on your application.

•Thank you for the resource! If we're still struggling to make the correction after a week, I'll definitely check that out. The waiting on hold is absolutely brutal.

Why are you freaking out? Just wait for the correction option to appear. Your daughter isn't going to lose all her financial aid over this. Schools understand that the new FAFSA system has been a nightmare. And honestly, $34k in assets isn't going to dramatically change your SAI anyway.

•I'm concerned because some of her schools have merit scholarship deadlines in January, and I don't want an incorrect FAFSA to disqualify her. But you're right, I probably need to take a deep breath.

•Merit scholarships usually don't even look at FAFSA data - they're based on GPA, test scores, essays, etc. They're separate from need-based aid. So that $34k won't impact merit scholarships at all.

This new FAFSA is SUCH a disaster!!! 😡 I've been dealing with this exact problem for TWO WEEKS now and still no correction button. Called them 4 times and got 4 completely different answers. One said wait 3 days, another said 5 business days, another said 14 days, and the last one said I need to submit a special form that doesn't even exist on their website!!! The whole system is BROKEN and they keep lying to cover it up. I'm convinced the "correction" feature is just completely broken right now and none of them want to admit it. My daughter's financial future is at stake and these incompetent bureaucrats can't even get a basic website function to work. BEYOND FRUSTRATING!!!

•I understand your frustration, but I've had several students successfully make corrections to their 2025-2026 FAFSAs this month. The system is working, but it's definitely inconsistent. I'd recommend trying from a different browser or device if you're still having issues after two weeks.

UPDATE: The correction button appeared today (6 days after submission)! We were able to add the custodial investment account without any issues. The system recalculated our SAI and it went up by about $1,800, which isn't as bad as I feared. Thank you all for the reassurance and guidance - this forum has been more helpful than the official customer service!

•Great news! And now you won't have to worry about verification flags for unreported assets. Always better to be accurate upfront!
