Will ESD pay my benefits next week after 6 week waiting period?

I was laid off from my accounting job 6 weeks ago this past Monday and have been filing weekly claims and actively job searching as required. I understand Washington has a waiting period, but I'm getting anxious because my claim status just shows 'pending' on the eServices portal with no additional information. My understanding is that the waiting week plus standard processing time equals about 6 weeks, so I should start receiving payments next week. Can anyone confirm if this timeline is accurate? I've tried calling but can't get through. Just want to make sure I'll actually see money next week since my savings are running low.

There seems to be some confusion here. Washington state only has a ONE week waiting period, not six weeks. If you've been waiting for 6 weeks with your claim still showing as 'pending', something isn't right. Your claim is likely stuck in adjudication or has an issue that needs to be resolved. Have you received any letters in your eServices inbox or by mail? Any notifications about identity verification or job separation issues?

Wait, seriously? Only ONE week? I could have sworn the agent I spoke with initially said 6 weeks for processing... now I'm really worried. I haven't received any letters or notifications requesting additional information - my eServices inbox is completely empty. Does this mean my claim is lost in the system or something??

i had this same problem last february, my claim got stuck for like 2 months!!! turns out my former employer disputed the layoff (they tried to claim i quit). check if theres a fact finding thing u need to fill out maybe? sometimes they dont notify u properly

Oh no, that's concerning. I just double-checked and there's definitely no fact-finding questionnaire waiting for me. My separation was pretty straightforward - company-wide layoffs with severance packages. I'm definitely going to try calling again tomorrow.

The 6-week timeframe you mentioned is incorrect. As the other commenter said, Washington only has a ONE week waiting period where you don't receive benefits but must still file a weekly claim. After that, you should begin receiving payments within 2-3 days of filing each weekly claim IF your claim is approved with no issues. If your status has been showing as 'pending' for 5+ weeks, your claim is almost certainly in adjudication, which means there's an issue that needs to be resolved before benefits can be paid. Common issues include: 1. Identity verification problems 2. Employer dispute about your separation reason 3. Work history verification 4. Earnings discrepancies You need to contact ESD ASAP to find out what's causing the delay. Unfortunately, getting through on the phone can be extremely difficult.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I'm shocked there's been such a misunderstanding on my part - I must have completely misinterpreted what the agent told me. I've been patiently waiting thinking this was normal processing time. I'll definitely make it a priority to contact ESD right away.

I had a similar experience earlier this year where my claim sat in pending status for nearly 8 weeks without any communication from ESD. I finally discovered there was an issue with my ID verification that I wasn't notified about. I'd recommend trying to call first thing in the morning (7:30am) when the queue is shorter. Also, have you checked your spam folder for any ESD emails? Sometimes their notifications get filtered. One thing that helped me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an ESD agent when I couldn't get through on my own. They have a service that helps you connect with ESD without spending hours on hold. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 It was definitely worth it for me to finally get my claim unstuck after weeks of frustration.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely check my spam folder, though I've been pretty vigilant about watching for communications. I've never heard of Claimyr before but at this point I'm willing to try anything if it helps me talk to a real person at ESD. I'll check out that video and consider using it if my attempts to get through tomorrow morning aren't successful.

not to freak u out but my sister waited 12 WEEKS for her first payment last year! ESD is a total mess tbh. they never even told her why it took so long. keep calling!!

12 weeks?? That's absolutely terrifying. I can't wait that long - I've already been stretching my savings for 6 weeks thinking payment was just around the corner. This is making me really anxious now.

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. There's definitely a misunderstanding here. Washington has a mandatory ONE week waiting period (the first week you're eligible). After that, claims without issues are typically processed within 1-3 weeks. Since you've been waiting 6 weeks with your claim still showing as "pending," there's almost certainly an issue that needs to be resolved. The most likely possibilities are: 1. Your employer contested the layoff or provided information that conflicts with your claim 2. There's a wage verification issue (your reported wages don't match employer records) 3. Your identity verification hasn't been completed 4. There's a technical glitch in processing your claim You MUST speak with an ESD representative to resolve this. Unfortunately, their phone system is overwhelmed. Try calling right when they open at 7:30am, and keep calling throughout the day if necessary. You can also try sending a secure message through your eServices account, but phone is typically faster for resolving issues.

Thank you for the HR perspective - that's really helpful! I'm going to try calling right when they open tomorrow morning. I'm pretty confident my employer wouldn't contest the layoff since it affected multiple departments and they provided severance, but maybe there's an issue with wage verification. I appreciate everyone's help clarifying this situation!

To follow up on this thread: Once you get your claim issues resolved, make sure you understand how the weekly claiming process works to avoid future problems: 1. File every week, even if your claim status is pending 2. Answer all questions accurately - contradictory answers can trigger adjudication 3. Report all work and earnings properly, even partial hours 4. Complete your 3 job search activities each week and document them correctly 5. Be prepared to provide your job search log if requested Many people don't realize that missing even one weekly claim can create significant delays. And once your claim is approved, you'll need to continue these activities to receive your benefits without interruption. Hope you get this resolved quickly!

This is excellent advice, thank you! I've been diligent about filing every week and documenting my job search activities (saving job posting details, application confirmation emails, etc.). I'm also keeping a spreadsheet of all my job search efforts just to be safe. Hoping I can get this resolved quickly so I can finally see some financial relief.
