How long does it take to start receiving unemployment benefits after filing in Washington?
I just got laid off from my warehouse job last week and filed my initial claim through the Washington ESD website three days ago. The application seemed to go through fine but I'm not seeing any payment information yet. My savings are pretty much gone and I need to know realistically how long it takes before I actually get money in my account. I've been doing the weekly claims like it says but still showing $0. Is this normal? When should I expect to see actual payments?

The waiting period for UI benefits in Washington is typically one week, so you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment. After that, if your claim is approved without any issues, payments usually start within 2-3 weeks of filing your initial application. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week even if you don't see payments yet.

•Thanks, that's helpful. So I should expect maybe 3-4 weeks total before seeing money? That's cutting it close but manageable I guess.

•Yeah that timeline sounds about right for straightforward claims. Just keep doing those weekly filings religiously or you'll lose out on payments.

It really depends on whether your claim needs adjudication or not. Mine took 6 weeks because they had to verify my job separation reason with my former employer. If Washington ESD needs to investigate anything about your claim, it can take much longer.

•How do I know if mine needs adjudication? I was laid off due to lack of work, nothing complicated about it.

•You should get a notice if they need to adjudicate. Since you were laid off for lack of work that's pretty straightforward so you'll probably be fine.

•Check your SecureAccess Washington account regularly. If they need anything from you it'll show up there as a pending issue.

I was in the same boat a few months ago - the waiting is stressful when bills are due. What helped me was using Claimyr to get through to an actual Washington ESD representative who could check my claim status. The regular phone lines are impossible but their service got me connected in like 10 minutes. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. Check out claimyr.com - they basically handle the calling and waiting for you. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through myself.

•I was skeptical too but ended up using them when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Worth every penny to actually talk to someone who could explain what was happening.

Just be patient and keep filing weekly. I made the mistake of not filing one week because I thought there was no point since I wasn't getting paid yet. Turns out that screwed up my whole claim and I had to start over. Don't do what I did!

•Yikes, good to know. I'll definitely keep filing even though it feels pointless right now.

•This is super important - you have to file every single week during your waiting period and after. Missing even one week can cause major delays.

The one week waiting period is unpaid but you still need to file for it. Then if everything goes smoothly, your first payment should be for week 2. Washington ESD usually processes payments on Tuesdays and they hit your account within 1-2 business days after that.

•So if I filed on Wednesday last week, I should theoretically see my first payment next week sometime?

•Possibly, but only if your claim gets approved without any issues. Keep checking your account for any pending determinations or requests for information.

•Don't count on it being that fast honestly. Even simple claims can take longer than expected these days.

the whole system is so slow its ridiculous. i filed in december and didn't see money until mid january. calling washington esd is a nightmare too, you'll be on hold for hours just to get disconnected

•That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Did you ever get through to someone or just had to wait it out?

For anyone struggling to reach Washington ESD by phone, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. I used them twice - once to check on my initial claim status and again when I had questions about my job search requirements. Both times I was talking to an ESD agent within minutes instead of spending my whole day calling.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems too good to be true.

•It's really reasonable considering the time it saves you. Way better than taking unpaid time off work to sit on hold all day.

•I tried it last month when my weekly claim was showing as not received even though I filed it. The rep was able to fix it immediately. Definitely worth it.

Make sure your direct deposit information is correct in your account. I've seen people wait extra weeks because their bank info was wrong and the payment got rejected. Also sign up for text alerts so you know when payments are processed.

Luca Bianchi
•Good point, I'll double check that. Where do I find the text alert option?

GalacticGuardian
•Should be in your SecureAccess Washington account under notification preferences. You can get alerts for when weekly claims are due and when payments are issued.

Been through this process 3 times over the years unfortunately. If you were legitimately laid off and everything on your application is accurate, 2-3 weeks is pretty standard for first payment. The key is making sure Washington ESD doesn't flag anything that requires review.

•What kind of things would get flagged? I tried to be really careful filling everything out.

Zoe Christodoulou
•Usually it's discrepancies between what you reported and what your employer reports, or if you had any disciplinary issues before being laid off. Sounds like you should be fine though.

•Sometimes they flag claims randomly too for quality control. It's not necessarily because you did something wrong.

The worst part is not knowing what's happening with your claim. I spent three weeks wondering if I did something wrong before finding out it was just normal processing time. At least now they send you determination letters so you know your claim was approved.

Luca Bianchi
•I haven't gotten any determination letter yet. Should I be worried?
0 coins
Yuki Nakamura
•Not necessarily, sometimes they take a while to send those out. As long as you can file your weekly claims you're probably okay.

Just wanted to add that you can check your payment history in your online account even before money hits your bank. If you see a payment listed there, it means it's been processed and should show up in your account within a day or two.

Luca Bianchi
•Thanks, I'll keep checking that. Nothing there yet but good to know what to look for.

•Yeah the online account updates before your bank does usually. That's how I always knew when to expect deposits.

One thing that helped me was setting up automatic weekly claim filing. That way I didn't have to remember to do it every week and risk missing the deadline. You can set it up in your account settings.
0 coins
Luca Bianchi
•Wait, you can do it automatically? I thought you had to manually file each week.

•You still have to answer the questions each week, but it'll remind you and prefill some of the basic info. Makes it faster at least.

GalacticGuardian
•I'd be careful with that - you want to make sure you're answering the questions accurately each week. The automated reminders are helpful though.

Hang in there, the first few weeks are always the hardest when you're worried about money. Once your payments start coming regularly it gets much less stressful. Just focus on job searching and keeping up with the weekly claims.

•Make sure you're documenting your job search activities too. Washington ESD requires proof of work search efforts.

If anyone needs to talk to Washington ESD urgently, I had great luck with Claimyr recently. My claim got stuck and I needed answers fast. Their service connected me to an agent who resolved my issue in one call. Way better than the endless busy signals on the regular number.

•Several people have mentioned this service now. Might be worth trying if I don't see progress soon.

•Definitely check out their demo video first so you know what to expect. The whole process is pretty straightforward.

Just remember that even after you get your first payment, there can be delays or issues later on. Keep all your documentation organized and stay on top of any requirements they send you. The system works but you have to stay engaged with it.
