Why is my Washington ESD unemployment account locked after multiple login attempts?
I've been trying to log into my Washington ESD account for the past two days and it keeps saying my account is locked. I think I might have entered my password wrong a few times yesterday when I was rushing to file my weekly claim. Now I can't get in at all and I'm worried I'm going to miss my filing deadline. Has anyone dealt with this before? I tried the password reset option but it's not working either.

Washington ESD locks accounts after 5 failed login attempts as a security measure. You'll need to wait 24 hours from the last failed attempt, or you can call their customer service line to unlock it manually. The automated unlock should happen on its own though.

•Thanks! Do you know if the 24 hour thing is accurate? I've been locked out since yesterday morning and still can't get in.

•Sometimes it takes longer than 24 hours, especially if you kept trying to log in after it was already locked. Each failed attempt resets the timer.

I had the same issue last month! The account lockout is really frustrating. I ended up calling Washington ESD but couldn't get through after waiting on hold for 3 hours. Eventually I just had to wait it out.

•Three hours?? That's insane. I can't afford to sit on hold that long with work and everything.

•Try calling right at 8am when they open. I got through in about 45 minutes that way.

Actually, if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to agents faster. They handle the waiting and callback for you - check out claimyr.com. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration when I needed to resolve an adjudication issue.

•Is this legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They don't ask for any personal info, just help you get in the phone queue and call you back when an agent is available.

•I might try this if my account doesn't unlock soon. Getting through to Washington ESD is nearly impossible these days.

Before you call, make sure you're using the correct login credentials. Sometimes people confuse their SAW (Secure Access Washington) login with their old UI account info. Your Washington ESD unemployment account uses your SAW username and password.

Chloe Martin
•Wait, what's the difference? I thought they were the same thing.

•SAW is the state's unified login system. Your unemployment benefits are accessed through SAW, but you use the same credentials for other state services too. If you created your account before 2020, you might have had separate logins.

this happened to me to and it took FOREVER to get resolved. washington esd's system is terrible

If you're still locked out after 48 hours, there might be a different issue. Sometimes Washington ESD flags accounts for suspicious activity or if there's a mismatch in your personal information. You'd need to speak with an agent to resolve that.

Chloe Martin
•What kind of suspicious activity? I haven't done anything weird, just tried to log in normally.

•Could be anything - logging in from a new device, different IP address, or if someone else tried to access your account. They're pretty strict about security.

Pro tip: clear your browser cache and cookies before trying to log in again. Sometimes the browser stores bad login data and keeps sending the wrong credentials even after you reset your password.

Chloe Martin
•I'll try that! Haven't thought about clearing cache.

•This actually worked for me when I had login issues. Also try using a different browser like Chrome instead of Internet Explorer.

I'm dealing with something similar but my account isn't locked, it just says my SSN doesn't match their records. Anyone know what that means?

Nia Thompson
•That's a different issue - usually means there's a data mismatch in their system. You'll definitely need to call Washington ESD for that one.

•Yeah, that's exactly the kind of thing Claimyr helped me with. Getting through to resolve identity verification issues is tough without help.

Have you tried using the 'Forgot Username' option instead of password reset? Sometimes the issue is that you're using the wrong username entirely.

Chloe Martin
•I'm pretty sure I know my username but I guess it's worth a try. Is the username your email or something else?
0 coins
Luca Esposito
•For SAW it's usually your email address, but some older accounts might use a different format. The forgot username tool will tell you what's on file.

Whatever you do, don't keep trying to log in while it's locked. I made that mistake and it extended my lockout period. Just wait it out or call for help.

•Good to know! I was tempted to keep trying but I'll stop now.

Also make sure you're going to the right website. The official Washington ESD login is through secure.esd.wa.gov, not any third-party sites. Phishing sites can cause account lockouts if you enter your credentials there.

•I've been using the same bookmark for months so I think I'm on the right site, but I'll double-check.

•Always good to verify the URL. I've seen people accidentally go to scam sites that look identical to the real one.

If you need to file your weekly claim and can't wait for the account to unlock, you can file by phone using the automated system at 1-800-318-6022. You'll need your PIN number though.

Chloe Martin
•I don't think I have a PIN set up. Is that different from my password?
0 coins
Nia Thompson
•Yes, the PIN is a separate 4-digit number for phone filing. If you don't have one set up, you'll need to establish it through your online account first.

The timing on this is really bad for me too. I'm supposed to file by Sunday and if I can't get in I'm going to miss my payment. This system is so unreliable.

•You usually have a grace period of a few days past the deadline before they consider it late. But definitely try to get it resolved ASAP.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - couldn't afford to miss my filing deadline while trying to get through to Washington ESD on my own.

Try logging in from a different device or network. Sometimes Washington ESD blocks certain IP addresses if they detect unusual activity. Use your phone's data instead of WiFi or try from a library computer.

•That's a good idea! I'll try from my phone instead of my laptop.

update us when you get it figured out! curious to see what actually works

Chloe Martin
•Will do! Trying the phone/different network approach first, then I'll look into that Claimyr thing if I still can't get through to Washington ESD.

One more thing - if you recently moved or changed your phone number, that could trigger a security lock too. Washington ESD compares your login location and contact info against what's on file.
0 coins
Chloe Martin
•I haven't moved but I did get a new phone number last month. Could that be causing issues?
0 coins
Diego Rojas
•Possibly! You should update your contact information in your profile once you get back in. That might prevent future lockouts.

Just want to say this thread has been super helpful. I've been putting off dealing with my own login issues but now I have some strategies to try.

•Yeah, the unemployment system can be really frustrating but there are usually workarounds if you know where to look.

Final thought - if you end up needing to call Washington ESD about this, have your Social Security number, date of birth, and the phone number on your account ready. They'll ask for all of that to verify your identity before they can help with account issues.

Chloe Martin
•Thanks for all the help everyone! I'm going to try the different device approach first, then go from there.

Quick reminder - even if your account is locked, make sure you're still doing your required job search activities. You'll need to report those once you regain access, and Washington ESD can audit your job search log at any time.

•Smart approach. It's always better to have too much documentation than not enough when dealing with unemployment benefits.
