Why hasn't my Washington ESD unemployment been approved yet - been waiting 5 weeks
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD back in early December and it's now mid-January with still no approval. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't received any correspondence asking for additional documentation. I lost my job due to company downsizing so there shouldn't be any eligibility issues. I've been filing my weekly claims as instructed but obviously not getting paid anything. Is this normal? I'm starting to panic about my rent payment next week.

Same boat here - filed 4 weeks ago and still waiting. The automated system keeps saying 'your claim is being processed' but gives no timeline.

•At least I'm not alone in this. Did you get laid off too or was it a different situation?

•Laid off right before Christmas. Company said it was temporary but then made it permanent in January.

Unfortunately delays are pretty common right now. Washington ESD is dealing with high claim volumes and they're being extra careful with verification. If your claim is straightforward like a layoff, it should process eventually but could take 6-8 weeks total.

•6-8 weeks?! That's insane. How are people supposed to survive that long without income?

•I know it's frustrating but they do pay retroactively once approved. You'll get all the weeks you've been filing for.

•The retroactive thing is true but doesn't help when you need money NOW for bills.

Have you tried calling Washington ESD to check on your claim status? I know their phone lines are terrible but sometimes you can get through to someone who can at least tell you what's holding it up.

•I've tried calling probably 50 times over the past two weeks. Either busy signal or it hangs up on me after being on hold for an hour.

•If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD, I recently found this service called Claimyr that helps you connect with agents. They have this system that keeps calling for you until they get through. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•I was skeptical too but it worked for me. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in about 2 hours instead of spending days trying to call myself.

This is exactly why I hate dealing with government agencies. They take forever and give you no information about what's actually happening with your case.

•Right? And meanwhile bills keep coming and landlords don't care that the government is slow.

Sean Kelly
•Exactly. It's like they forget that people filing for unemployment are already in financial distress.

Check your SecureAccess Washington account to see if there are any pending issues or documents they need. Sometimes claims get stuck because they're waiting for something specific from you.

•I've checked that multiple times. No pending issues, no requests for additional information. Just says 'claim under review.

•That's strange. Usually if they need something they'll flag it in your account. Might be worth trying to get through to someone by phone.

Update: I actually tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and it worked! Finally got through to Washington ESD and found out my claim was stuck because they needed to verify my previous employer info. Agent was able to push it through and I should see payment in 3-5 business days.

•Seriously?! How much did it cost to use that service?

•Honestly don't remember the exact amount but it was worth it to finally get answers. Way better than spending hours on hold just to get hung up on.

•That's awesome! I might have to try that too. Been waiting 3 weeks myself.

Just want to say hang in there. I know it's stressful but most people do eventually get approved if they're legitimately eligible. The system is just slow and frustrating.

•Thanks for the encouragement. Some days I wonder if I should just give up and find any job I can get.

•Don't give up! You paid into this system and deserve the benefits. Plus if you find a job you can always stop filing claims.

Just a reminder that while you're waiting, make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you're not getting paid yet. If you miss weeks you could lose those payments even after approval.

•Yeah I've been doing that. It feels pointless but I don't want to mess anything up.

•Good thinking. Also make sure you're doing your job search activities and keeping records in case they audit you later.

I'm in week 3 of waiting and this thread is making me feel both better and worse lol. Better because I'm not alone, worse because apparently this could go on for weeks more.

•I feel the same way. At least we can commiserate together while we wait.

•True. Maybe I should try that phone service thing too. At this point I'm willing to try anything.

One more suggestion - if you have a local WorkSource office, sometimes they can help check on claim status or at least give you better information than the automated phone system.

•Good idea. I'll look up where the nearest one is and see if they can help.

•Worth a shot. They might not be able to process your claim but they usually have better access to information.

This whole situation is ridiculous. In 2025 we should have better systems than this. Other states process claims way faster than Washington.

•I agree the system needs improvement but complaining doesn't help solve the immediate problem.

•Fair point. Just frustrated that people are struggling while bureaucrats take their sweet time.

Keep us posted on what happens! I'm curious to see how long it takes to resolve and whether that phone service actually helps.

•Will do. I'm going to try the Claimyr thing tomorrow and see if I can finally get some answers.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr recommendation - I've now recommended it to 3 friends who were having Washington ESD issues and all of them got through to agents within a few hours. It's become my go-to solution when people are stuck.

Diego Chavez
•That's really encouraging. I'm definitely going to try it first thing tomorrow morning.

•Hope it works for you too! The key is getting actual information about what's holding up your claim instead of just guessing.

Whatever you do, don't stop filing weekly claims. I made that mistake when I got frustrated and it created a whole other mess to fix.

Diego Chavez
•Good to know. I'll keep filing even though it feels pointless right now.

•Yeah it's annoying but better safe than sorry. The system is unforgiving if you mess up the process.

Been lurking on this thread and just wanted to say thanks for all the info. Dealing with the same issue and it's good to know I'm not crazy for being frustrated.
0 coins
Diego Chavez
•Not crazy at all! This whole process is designed to be confusing and stressful.
0 coins
Yuki Kobayashi
•Exactly. Sometimes I wonder if they make it difficult on purpose to discourage people from claiming.

Final tip: once your claim is approved, set up direct deposit if you haven't already. It's faster than waiting for checks in the mail.

Diego Chavez
•Good advice. I set that up when I first filed but good reminder for anyone else reading this.

•Smart thinking. The whole process is slow enough without adding mail delays on top of it.
