Why does my Washington ESD unemployment claim say hold - need help understanding
Just checked my claim status online and it shows 'hold' but I have no idea what that means or why it happened. I've been filing my weekly claims on time and doing my job searches. Last week everything was normal and I got paid. Now suddenly there's a hold and no explanation anywhere. Has anyone else seen this? What does it mean when Washington ESD puts a hold on your claim?

A hold usually means there's something they need to review or verify about your claim. Could be anything from a work search issue to needing to verify your identity or employment information.

•I haven't gotten any messages or letters about what they need though. Shouldn't they tell me what the problem is?

•They should but sometimes the system puts a hold first and the notice comes later. Check your correspondence inbox on the website.

•How did you find out what the issue was? I can't get through to anyone on the phone.

•thats the worst part - calling washington esd is impossible. i used this service called claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual person. they have some system that deals with the phone lines for you

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. How does it work?

•you just give them your info and they call for you and get you connected to a real agent. saved me weeks of trying to call myself. they have a demo video too https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

Common reasons for holds include: 1) Identity verification needed 2) Work search requirements not met 3) Earnings reported that need clarification 4) Potential fraud flags 5) Missing documentation from your initial claim. The key is finding out which specific issue triggered the hold.

•I reported some part-time work last month but it was under the threshold. Could that cause a hold?

Connor Murphy
•Yes, any earnings report can trigger a review, especially if the system flags it as inconsistent with previous reports or if there's a question about the dates.

•Washington ESD is so paranoid about fraud they put holds on everything now. I got one for working literally 4 hours in a week.

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME LAST MONTH!!! No explanation, just a hold status. I tried calling for 3 weeks straight and never got through. Finally got it resolved but it took forever and I missed 2 payments.

•How did you finally get it resolved? I'm worried I'm going to miss payments too.

•I kept calling every day at 8am sharp when they open. Eventually got lucky and got through. But honestly you might want to try that claimyr thing the other person mentioned - would have saved me a lot of stress.

Check if you have any pending issues in your account. Sometimes there's a questionnaire or document upload request that's not obvious. Also make sure you're looking at the right place - the hold might be specific to one week's claim.

•I've checked everywhere I can think of. There's nothing in my correspondence and no pending issues showing up.

•That's frustrating. You really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD to get the specific reason for your hold.

i had a hold for like 6 weeks once. turned out to be some random computer glitch. washington esd system is terrible

Ava Martinez
•6 weeks?! How did you survive without payments for that long?

Paolo Conti
•barely did. had to borrow money from family. washington esd eventually backpaid everything but man it was rough

•This is exactly why I tell everyone to have an emergency fund. You can't rely on unemployment payments being consistent.

Quick update - have you tried logging out completely and logging back in? Sometimes the system shows old status information. Also try a different browser or clear your cache.

Ava Martinez
•Just tried that and it still shows the hold. This is really stressing me out.

Miguel Ortiz
•I understand the stress. At this point you need to speak with a representative to get the specific reason and timeline for resolving it.

just want to follow up on the claimyr thing - i was skeptical at first too but it actually works. got me through to washington esd in like 20 minutes instead of calling for days

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already struggling financially.

•its worth it when you consider how much time you save and how much stress it eliminates. plus if you get your payments faster it pays for itself

Washington ESD puts holds on everything now. I swear they're trying to deny as many claims as possible. The whole system is designed to make you give up.

•That's not fair to say. They have to investigate potential issues to prevent fraud. It's frustrating but there are legitimate reasons.

Yara Sayegh
•Maybe but they could at least tell you what the problem is instead of just putting a mysterious hold with no explanation.

For anyone dealing with unexplained holds, document everything - when the hold appeared, what you were doing differently, any changes to your situation. This information will be helpful when you finally speak with a representative.

•Good advice. I've been taking screenshots of everything just in case.

•Smart. Also keep track of any financial hardship the delay causes - sometimes they can expedite resolution if you explain the impact.

same thing happened to my brother. turned out washington esd needed him to verify his address even though he never moved. took 3 weeks to resolve

Ava Martinez
•How did they contact him about the address verification? I haven't gotten any requests like that.

•they sent a letter but it got lost in the mail. he only found out when he finally got through on the phone

Try checking your spam email folder too. Sometimes Washington ESD emails end up there and you might have missed a notice about what documentation they need.

•Just checked and nothing there either. This is so frustrating not knowing what the issue is.

I work at a workforce center and see this all the time. Usually it's identity verification, work search compliance, or earnings reconciliation. The hold will stay until you provide whatever they're looking for.
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•But how am I supposed to provide something if they won't tell me what they need?
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•That's the catch-22. You have to reach them by phone or sometimes the issue will show up in your account after a few days. It's not a perfect system.

•This is exactly why services like claimyr exist - to help people get through when the normal system fails them

hope you get it sorted out soon. waiting for unemployment payments when you need them is the worst feeling

•Thanks, I really appreciate the support. This community has been more helpful than Washington ESD so far.

Just remembered - when I had my hold issue, the agent told me it was because I accidentally put the wrong date on one of my work search activities. Such a minor thing but it flagged the whole claim.

Ava Martinez
•That's crazy that such a small mistake can cause such a big problem. I'm going to go back and double-check all my work search entries.

•Yeah it's ridiculous but that's how their system works. Every little detail matters.

washington esd is backed up on everything right now. even simple holds are taking weeks to resolve. its not just you

•That's somewhat reassuring to know it's not just me, but also concerning that it might take forever to fix.

One more thing to try - if you haven't already, submit a contact form through the Washington ESD website explaining your situation. Sometimes that gets a faster response than calling.

Ava Martinez
•I'll try that too. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get this resolved.

•Good luck. Keep us posted on what you find out - it might help others in the same situation.

UPDATE: I used claimyr and finally got through to Washington ESD. Turns out they needed me to verify my employment dates from 2 jobs ago. Something that could have been resolved in 5 minutes if I had known what they needed.

Ava Martinez
•Wow, that's such a random thing to need verification for. Glad you got it sorted out though!

•Yeah it was completely random. The agent said their system flagged it for some reason. At least the hold is lifted now and I should get my back payments next week.

•see! told you claimyr works. glad you got it figured out

Thanks for the update! This is a perfect example of why communication from Washington ESD needs to be clearer. A simple automated message explaining what verification is needed would save everyone time and stress.

•Exactly! I'm going to try the claimyr service too since it seems like the only reliable way to actually talk to someone.

•It's unfortunate that third-party services are necessary, but if it helps people get their issues resolved quickly, it's worth considering.

this whole thread is why i tell people to keep detailed records of everything unemployment related. you never know what random thing theyll want to verify months later

•Great advice. I'm definitely going to be more organized with my unemployment documentation going forward.

I went through the exact same thing last month! The hold appeared out of nowhere with zero explanation. After reading through this thread, I'm definitely going to try that claimyr service - seems like it's the only way to actually reach someone at Washington ESD. It's ridiculous that we have to pay a third party just to get basic information about our own claims. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, at least now I know I'm not alone in dealing with this broken system.
