Who gets unemployment benefits in Washington - need to know if I qualify

I just got laid off from my retail job after 8 months and I'm trying to figure out if I can even get unemployment benefits. My manager said something about needing to work a certain amount of time but I'm not sure what the actual requirements are. I was working part-time for most of those months, around 25-30 hours per week. Does anyone know who actually qualifies for Washington ESD unemployment? I don't want to go through the whole application process if I'm just going to get denied.

You need to meet Washington's base period requirements which means you had to earn a minimum amount in wages during your base period (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters). For 2025, you need at least $1,849 in your highest quarter and total wages of at least $3,695. Part-time work counts as long as you meet these wage thresholds.

Thanks! How do I figure out what my base period is exactly? I started working in March last year.

If you file now, your base period would be the first quarter of 2024 through the fourth quarter of 2024. Washington ESD will calculate this automatically when you apply.

You also have to be unemployed through no fault of your own. Getting laid off counts, but if you quit or got fired for misconduct you probably won't qualify.

I was definitely laid off, they said it was due to slow business. Should be fine there.

The hardest part isn't qualifying, it's actually getting through to Washington ESD to file your claim or get help when something goes wrong. I spent weeks trying to reach them when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Finally used Claimyr.com to get connected to an actual agent - they have this system that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you through. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

How much does that cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

It's worth it when you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

Don't forget you also need to be able and available for work, actively seeking employment, and meet the job search requirements. Washington requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities.

What counts as a job search contact? Just applying online or do you need to do more?

Online applications count, but you can also include attending job fairs, networking events, or contacting employers directly. Just make sure to document everything in your job search log.

ugh the whole system is so confusing... i filed 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back. how long does it take to get approved?

If your claim is straightforward, it usually takes 1-2 weeks. If there are any issues, it goes to adjudication which can take much longer.

what kind of issues would make it take longer??

Things like questions about why you left your job, wage discrepancies, or if you worked in multiple states. Check your online account to see if there are any pending issues.

You mentioned retail - make sure you didn't have any job offers that you turned down recently. That can disqualify you from benefits.

No job offers, I was just working my regular shifts until they told us they were cutting staff.

The wage requirements trip up a lot of people. Even if you worked, if you didn't earn enough in the right quarters you won't qualify. I had a friend who worked seasonal jobs and couldn't get benefits because of the timing.

That happened to me too! Worked all summer but started too late in the quarter.

This is making me nervous. I should probably just apply and see what happens rather than trying to figure it all out first.

Definitely apply! The worst they can say is no, and if you get denied you can appeal. I thought I wouldn't qualify because I had some gaps in employment but I ended up getting approved.

Good point. I'll start the application today.

Just remember you need to file your weekly claims every week even while your initial claim is being processed. Miss a week and you lose benefits for that week permanently.

This is super important! I missed my first week because I didn't know about this rule.

When do I start filing weekly claims? Right after I submit my initial application?

Lindsey Fry

•

Yes, you'll get instructions after you file your initial claim. Don't wait for approval - start filing weekly claims right away.

If you run into issues reaching Washington ESD during the process, I had good luck with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Used it when I needed to check on my adjudication status and couldn't get through on the phone.

Did it actually work? I'm skeptical of anything that charges money to help with government benefits.

Yeah it worked for me. I was able to talk to an actual Washington ESD rep and get my issue resolved. Sometimes you just need to reach a human being.

Also make sure your SSN and other personal info matches exactly what's on file with Washington state. Any discrepancies can cause delays.

Good tip, thanks. I'll double check everything before submitting.

One more thing - if you worked for a temp agency or had multiple employers, make sure to list ALL of them on your application. Missing an employer can cause problems later.

I only had the one retail job, so that should be straightforward at least.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator that can give you an estimate of what you might receive if you qualify. Might be worth checking out before you apply.

Oh that's helpful! I'll look for that on their site.

Just remember the calculator is only an estimate. Your actual benefit amount might be different.

Good luck with your application! The process can be frustrating but stick with it. Unemployment benefits are there to help people in situations like yours.
