Where to go to file for unemployment - Washington ESD process?
Lost my job two days ago and I have no idea where to start with filing for unemployment benefits. I keep seeing different websites when I search online and I'm worried about going to the wrong place. Can someone tell me exactly where to go to file for unemployment in Washington state? Is it all online now or do I need to go somewhere in person?

You need to go to esd.wa.gov - that's the official Washington ESD website. Don't use any other sites because there are scam sites out there. The filing process is completely online now, you can't file in person anymore.

•Thank you! I was worried I'd end up on some fake site. So everything is done through esd.wa.gov?

Anastasia Fedorov
•Yes, that's the only official site. You'll create an account and file your initial application there.

The official process is through esd.wa.gov but fair warning - their phone system is absolutely terrible if you need to talk to someone. I spent weeks trying to get through when my claim got stuck in adjudication.

•Same here! I called probably 200 times over 3 weeks and never got through to a real person.

•Have you guys tried Claimyr? I found it on claimyr.com after getting frustrated with the phone system. They actually got me connected to a Washington ESD agent in like 10 minutes. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Here's what you need to know about filing: Go to esd.wa.gov, click on 'File a Claim for Benefits', and you'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information for the last 18 months. Make sure you have all your previous employers' addresses and dates of employment ready.

•Do I need to know exact addresses for every job? I worked at a few temp agencies last year.

Luca Romano
•For temp agencies, you'll need the agency's address, not each individual job site. But try to be as accurate as possible with dates.

•And don't stress too much about perfect accuracy - you can always update information later if needed.

whatever you do dont wait to file!! I made that mistake and lost out on benefits because I thought I had to wait until my last day or something. You can file the day you lose your job.

•Really? I thought I had to wait until I actually stopped getting paid.

•No, you should file as soon as possible. Benefits are effective from the date you file, not retroactive to when you lost your job.

The website is esd.wa.gov but honestly the whole system is a nightmare. I've been waiting 5 weeks for my adjudication to clear and can't get anyone on the phone. The automated system just hangs up on you after making you wait forever.

•Ugh I feel your pain. The phone system is designed to discourage people from calling.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - I was getting nowhere with the regular phone system. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

•How does that work exactly? Is it legit?

To directly answer your question: esd.wa.gov is where you file. But also be prepared for potential delays and issues. The system works fine for straightforward cases, but if anything gets flagged for review you might be in for a long wait.

•What kind of things get flagged for review?

•Things like being fired vs laid off, having multiple employers, working while filing, or if they can't verify your wages with previous employers.

Just file online at esd.wa.gov - it's pretty straightforward. The website walks you through everything step by step. Don't overthink it!

•Thanks, that's reassuring. I tend to overthink these things.

•Yeah the application itself isn't too bad, it's dealing with problems after that gets frustrating.

IMPORTANT: After you file your initial claim on esd.wa.gov, you have to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Don't forget about that part or you'll miss payments.

Diego Vargas
•How do I do the weekly claims? Same website?
0 coins
Ethan Taylor
•Yes, same site. You log in every week and answer questions about your job search activities and any work you did that week.

•And you have to do job search activities every week or they'll stop your benefits.

I filed last month and it was pretty easy through esd.wa.gov. The hardest part was gathering all the employment information they wanted, especially from jobs I had 2 years ago.

Diego Vargas
•Did you have any issues with your claim getting approved?

Carmen Lopez
•Nope, mine went through fine in about a week. I think it helps that I was clearly laid off due to budget cuts.

esd.wa.gov is correct but make sure you're on the right page. There's 'File a New Claim' vs 'Reopen a Claim' - you want the new claim option if this is your first time filing.

Diego Vargas
•Good point, I wouldn't have thought about that distinction.

•Yeah and don't accidentally click on 'Weekly Claim' either - that's for after you've already filed your initial application.

Pro tip: file your claim early in the morning if possible. The website gets slower later in the day, especially on Mondays when everyone's trying to file their weekly claims.

•Good advice! I noticed the site was super slow when I tried to file on a Monday afternoon.

•I'll definitely try to do it early tomorrow morning then.

One more thing - when you file on esd.wa.gov, write down your claim number or take a screenshot. You'll need it for reference if you have to call about anything later.

Diego Vargas
•That's a great tip, thank you!

•Also save copies of everything you submit, just in case.

The process through esd.wa.gov is straightforward but if you run into any snags and need to actually talk to someone, that's where it gets tricky. I used a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an agent when I couldn't reach anyone myself.

•How much does something like that cost?

•It was worth it for me since I was stuck for weeks, but hopefully you won't need anything like that. Most people's claims go through fine.

Just to add - after you file on esd.wa.gov, you'll get a determination letter in the mail (or electronically) telling you if you're approved and how much you'll get per week. Don't panic if it takes a few days to arrive.

Diego Vargas
•How long does it usually take to get that letter?
0 coins
NebulaNinja
•Usually within a week, but it can take longer if there are any issues with your claim.

Make sure when you go to esd.wa.gov that you're using a secure connection (https). There are scam sites that try to look like the real thing.

Diego Vargas
•Good point about security. I'll double-check the URL.

•Yeah never enter personal info on a site that doesn't have the lock icon in your browser.
