Everything is online now through the Washington ESD website. You'll need to go to esd.wa.gov and create an account if you don't have one already. The process takes about 30-45 minutes to complete your initial application.

•thanks! do i need any specific documents or info before i start?

•Yes, have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months ready. You'll also need your most recent pay stub and separation notice if you have it.

Just filed mine two weeks ago. The Washington ESD online system is pretty straightforward but make sure you have all your employer information handy including addresses and dates of employment. Also be prepared for the adjudication process if there are any issues with your claim.

•what's adjudication? sounds scary

Oliver Alexander
•It's just when they need to review your claim for eligibility. Could be anything from verifying your reason for separation to checking if you're able and available for work. Usually takes 2-4 weeks.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone for questions, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me connect with an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•how much does that cost? seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to someone

•I get the frustration but honestly it was worth it for me rather than spending entire days trying to get through. The Washington ESD phone system is just overwhelmed.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A MESS! I've been trying to get answers about my claim for weeks and nobody picks up the phone. It's like they don't want to help people who actually need unemployment benefits.

•I feel you on the phone situation. The call volume is insane. Try calling right at 8am when they open or during lunch hours when it might be less busy.

•tried that already, still get the busy signal or get disconnected after waiting for an hour

make sure when you file online that you answer all the questions honestly especially about why you lost your job. if you quit vs got fired vs laid off makes a big difference for your eligibility

Morgan Washington
•i got laid off due to company downsizing so that should be ok right?

Kaylee Cook
•Yes, layoffs due to lack of work are typically eligible for benefits. Just make sure you have documentation from your employer about the layoff.

One thing to remember is that you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. Don't forget to do this even if your initial claim is still being processed or you're waiting for adjudication to complete.

Morgan Washington
•how do the weekly claims work exactly?
0 coins
Oliver Alexander
•You log into your Washington ESD account every week and answer questions about your job search activities, any work you did, and confirm you're still unemployed and looking for work.

•And don't lie about your job search! They do check and you need to be actively looking for work to remain eligible.

i went through this same thing 6 months ago when my restaurant closed permanently. the online application was actually pretty easy once i had all my info together. took about 3 weeks to get my first payment but that included the adjudication period

Morgan Washington
•3 weeks isn't too bad i guess. did you have any problems with the process?
0 coins
Adrian Hughes
•Not really, just had to submit some additional paperwork about the restaurant closure. Washington ESD was actually pretty helpful once I got through to someone.

Don't forget you might be eligible for job training programs through WorkSource while you're receiving benefits. Can be a good way to learn new skills while looking for work.

Morgan Washington
•that's interesting, where do i find info about those programs?

Marcus Patterson
•Check out worksourcewa.com - they have listings of training programs and also help with job search activities that count toward your weekly requirements.

still think the whole system is broken but at least the online filing part works most of the time. just dont expect to talk to a human being anytime soon

•lol so true, that's why services like claimyr are getting popular

To directly answer your original question - go to esd.wa.gov, click 'Apply for Benefits', create your SecureAccess Washington account if needed, and follow the prompts. The site will walk you through everything step by step.

Morgan Washington
•perfect, that's exactly what i needed to know. going to start the application right now

•Good luck! Remember to keep track of all your job search activities from day one, even before your first payment. You'll need to report them on your weekly claims.

Just a heads up that if you have any complications with your claim, trying to reach Washington ESD by phone can be really frustrating. I ended up using Claimyr after spending days trying to get through, and it connected me with an agent in about 10 minutes.

•That's actually really helpful to know. The phone situation is definitely the worst part of dealing with Washington ESD.

Lydia Bailey
•Exactly. For simple stuff the website works fine, but when you need to actually talk to someone about your specific situation, having a way to skip the phone tree is huge.

Make sure you file as soon as possible after losing your job. There's usually a one-week waiting period before benefits start, so the sooner you apply the sooner that week starts counting.

Morgan Washington
•oh good point, i'll definitely get on this today then

•Smart move. Also keep all your paperwork organized because if there are any questions about your claim you'll want to have everything ready to submit.

pro tip: take screenshots of your application after you submit it and save confirmation numbers. the system sometimes glitches and you'll want proof you filed on time

•This is actually really good advice. I had to resubmit part of my application because of a technical error.

The Washington ESD website has a pretty good FAQ section too if you run into specific questions during the application process. Covers most of the common scenarios people encounter.

Morgan Washington
•i'll check that out too, thanks for all the help everyone

•No problem! The unemployment process can be stressful but once you get through the initial application it gets more routine.

One last thing - if your claim gets approved, you'll get a debit card in the mail for your benefit payments. Don't throw it away thinking it's junk mail! Happened to my neighbor and she had to wait another week for a replacement.
0 coins
Morgan Washington
•good to know! how long does it usually take to get the card?
0 coins
Oliver Alexander
•Usually about 7-10 business days after your claim is approved. The card comes from KeyBank, not directly from Washington ESD.
0 coins
Kaylee Cook
•Yes, and you can also set up direct deposit instead of using the debit card if you prefer. That option is in your online account settings.

filed mine online last month and it was pretty straightforward. biggest pain was gathering all the employment dates and addresses going back 18 months but once i had that it only took about 30 minutes

Morgan Washington
•that doesn't sound too bad, i was worried it would take hours

Sofia Price
•nah the actual application is pretty quick, it's just the prep work that takes time

Remember that filing for unemployment isn't something to be embarrassed about - you paid into the system through your taxes and this is exactly what it's for. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about using benefits you're entitled to.

Morgan Washington
•thanks for saying that, i was actually feeling pretty down about having to file

Alice Coleman
•It's a safety net that exists for exactly this situation. Focus on finding your next opportunity and let the benefits help you bridge the gap.

just dont expect the process to be smooth sailing. between the website glitches and impossible phone system its designed to frustrate people into giving up

Ian Armstrong
•It's definitely not perfect but most people do eventually get through the process successfully. Try to stay patient with it.

If you do run into issues that require talking to someone at Washington ESD, definitely consider using Claimyr to get through. I mentioned it earlier but it really did save me a lot of hassle when I had questions about my adjudication status.

Morgan Washington
•i'll keep that in mind if i need to call them for anything

•The video demo I linked earlier shows exactly how it works if you want to check it out ahead of time.

Good luck with your application! The hardest part is just getting started. Once you're in the system and doing your weekly claims it becomes pretty routine.

•That's great to hear! Don't hesitate to come back and ask if you run into any specific issues during the process.
