Where do you go to sign up for unemployment in Washington state?

I just got laid off from my restaurant job and I have no idea where to start with filing for unemployment benefits. Is there a physical office I need to visit or do I apply online? I'm completely lost on where you go to sign up for unemployment in Washington. Any help would be appreciated!

You apply online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. There's no need to visit an office in person anymore - everything is done digitally now. You'll need to create an account and fill out the initial application.

Thank you! Do I need any specific documents ready before I start the application?

0 coins

Yes, have your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months ready. You'll also need bank account info for direct deposit.

The Washington ESD online system can be tricky to navigate at first. Make sure you complete the entire application in one sitting if possible - I had issues when I tried to save and come back later.

0 coins

Good to know! About how long does the whole application take?

0 coins

Took me about 45 minutes to get through everything, but I had all my paperwork organized beforehand.

If you run into issues with the Washington ESD phone system (which you probably will), I found Claimyr really helpful. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Never heard of that service. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

0 coins

It's legit - I used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself.

0 coins

I'll keep that in mind if I have trouble reaching them. Hopefully the online application goes smoothly first.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible after your last day of work. There's a waiting week but the sooner you file, the sooner your benefit year starts. Don't wait thinking you might find a job quickly.

0 coins

My last day was Friday, so I should apply this week then?

0 coins

Absolutely! File this week. The system processes applications faster on weekdays typically.

Ugh the Washington ESD website is such a pain. I spent 2 hours yesterday just trying to log in and it kept timing out. Why can't they make this easier??

0 coins

Try using Chrome or Firefox instead of Safari if you're on Mac. The site works better with those browsers.

0 coins

I was using Chrome. Maybe it was just server issues yesterday.

Just be prepared for the system to ask you a million questions about your work history. They want to know about every job you've had in the past 18 months, even if it was just temporary work.

0 coins

I had a couple of short-term gigs last year. Do I need exact dates for everything?

0 coins

Ev Luca

As exact as possible. If you don't remember the exact day, at least get the month and year right.

0 coins

Check your old pay stubs if you still have them - that's the easiest way to get accurate dates.

0 coins

One thing they don't tell you upfront - you have to file weekly claims every week even if you haven't received your first payment yet. Don't skip weeks or you'll lose those benefits permanently.

0 coins

Wait, what are weekly claims? I thought you just applied once?

0 coins

The initial application starts your claim, but you have to certify every week that you're still unemployed and looking for work. It's called filing your weekly claim.

0 coins

This is super important - mark your calendar to file every Sunday. You can file online or by phone.

0 coins

Does anyone know if restaurant workers even qualify for unemployment? I heard some employers try to classify you as independent contractor to avoid paying into the system.

0 coins

If you were paid as a W2 employee (not 1099), you should qualify. Most restaurant workers are W2 employees even if some employers try to misclassify them.

0 coins

I was definitely W2 - got regular paychecks with taxes taken out.

0 coins

Then you should be good to go. Good luck with the application!

Pro tip: create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first before starting the unemployment application. You'll need it to access the Washington ESD systems and it takes a few minutes to set up.

0 coins

What's SecureAccess Washington? Is that different from the regular Washington ESD website?

0 coins

It's the state's unified login system. You use the same SAW account for unemployment, licensing, and other state services.

0 coins

Seriously though, if the website gives you trouble, don't give up. I had to try three different times before I got through the whole application without errors.

0 coins

That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr when I needed help. Sometimes it's worth it to have someone who knows the system handle the phone calls.

0 coins

I might look into that if I keep having issues. The automated phone system is even worse than the website.

0 coins

Just filed mine last week after being laid off from Boeing. The whole process took about an hour once I had all my paperwork together. Most time-consuming part was entering all the employer information.

0 coins

How long before you heard back about approval?

0 coins

Still waiting - it's been 5 days. From what I've read, it can take 1-3 weeks depending on if they need to verify anything with your employer.

0 coins

Make sure you understand the job search requirements before you start collecting benefits. You'll need to log your job search activities and be prepared to show them if asked.

0 coins

How many jobs do you have to apply to each week?

0 coins

It depends on your situation, but generally you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week. Keep detailed records of where you applied.

0 coins

And register with WorkSourceWA - that's required too. You can do it online at worksourcewa.com

0 coins

One more tip - don't answer questions incorrectly about why you left your job. If you were laid off, make sure you select that option, not 'quit' or 'fired'. Getting that wrong can delay your claim.

0 coins

Good point. I was definitely laid off due to slow business, not fired for cause.

0 coins

Perfect, then you should have no issues. Just be consistent with that story throughout the application.

0 coins

The Washington ESD customer service is pretty much impossible to reach by phone. I tried calling 47 times over two days and never got through to a human.

0 coins

That's exactly the problem Claimyr solves. They handle all that calling and waiting for you. Totally worth it when you actually need to talk to someone.

0 coins

I wish I had known about that service when I was trying to get through. Would have saved me so much frustration.

0 coins

Remember that your benefit amount is based on your earnings in the first four of the last five quarters before you filed. So if you just started the restaurant job recently, your benefits might be lower than expected.

0 coins

I worked there for 8 months, but had another job before that. Do they look at both jobs?

0 coins

Yes, they'll look at all your qualifying wages from all employers during that base period. More earnings generally means higher weekly benefits.

0 coins

Don't forget to set up direct deposit when you apply. Waiting for paper checks takes forever and they get lost sometimes.

0 coins

Can I change to direct deposit later if I forget to set it up initially?

0 coins

Yes, but it's easier to just do it during the application. You'll need your routing and account numbers.

0 coins

The application will ask about your availability to work. Make sure you answer that you're available full-time unless you have specific restrictions. Being too picky about hours can affect your eligibility.

0 coins

I can work any shift at this point. Beggars can't be choosers, right?

0 coins

Exactly the right attitude! Washington ESD wants to see that you're actively looking and willing to take suitable work.

0 coins

If your claim gets flagged for adjudication (manual review), don't panic. It just means they need to verify something with your employer or review your separation reason. It can add 2-4 weeks to the process though.

0 coins

How do you know if it gets flagged for adjudication?

0 coins

Your claim status will show 'adjudication in progress' instead of 'approved' when you log in to check. You might also get a letter asking for more information.

0 coins

That's another situation where Claimyr comes in handy - they can help you get through to find out what's holding up your adjudication.

0 coins

Good luck with your application! The restaurant industry has been tough lately. Hopefully you'll find something new soon but at least unemployment benefits can help bridge the gap.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I feel much more prepared to tackle the application now.

0 coins

You've got this! Come back and let us know if you run into any issues.

0 coins

Just a heads up - the Washington ESD system does maintenance on Sunday nights sometimes, so if you can't access it then, try again Monday morning.

0 coins

Good to know! I was planning to apply tonight but maybe I'll wait until tomorrow to avoid any technical issues.

0 coins

Smart move. Weekday mornings seem to have the fewest problems with the site.

0 coins

Last piece of advice - keep copies of everything you submit and save confirmation numbers. If something goes wrong later, you'll need that documentation to prove you filed correctly and on time.

0 coins

I'll definitely screenshot everything. Thanks again everyone - this forum has been incredibly helpful!

0 coins

You're welcome! Hope your application goes smoothly and you get approved quickly.
