Where can I go to apply for unemployment in person at Washington ESD?
I know most people apply online but I really need to talk to someone face to face about my unemployment application. I've been trying to figure out the online system but it's confusing and I keep getting error messages. Are there any Washington ESD offices where I can actually walk in and get help applying for unemployment benefits? I'm in the Seattle area if that matters. I lost my job last week and really need to get this process started but I learn better when someone can show me what to do.

Unfortunately Washington ESD doesn't really do walk-in services anymore. Most of their offices closed to the public during COVID and they never reopened for in-person appointments. You pretty much have to apply online through their website or call them, but good luck getting through on the phone.

•That's really frustrating. I'm not great with computers and the website keeps timing out on me.

•Same here, the online system is terrible. I gave up trying to apply online after it crashed on me three times.

You can try calling the Washington ESD customer service line but be prepared to wait on hold for hours. I called 47 times last month before I finally got through to someone. The number is on their website but honestly it's a nightmare trying to reach them.

•47 times?? That's insane. There has to be a better way to get help with this.

•The phone system is completely broken. I've been calling for weeks and either get disconnected or the line just goes dead.

I had the same problem getting through to Washington ESD by phone until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to ESD agents without having to sit on hold all day. I used it last month and actually got connected to someone within 20 minutes. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•Is that legitimate? I've never heard of it before but if it actually works I'm willing to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's real, I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than spending all day redialing the same number over and over.

•I can vouch for Claimyr too. Used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication and I needed to talk to someone urgently.

Some WorkSource offices might be able to help you navigate the online application, but they can't actually file the claim for you. They're more for job search assistance but the staff there are usually pretty helpful with computer stuff.

•That's a good idea! I didn't think about WorkSource. At least someone could sit with me while I try to figure out the website.

•WorkSource helped me when I was having trouble with my weekly claims. They can't do everything but they're better than nothing.

honestly the whole system is a mess. i applied online back in january and my claim is still pending. washington esd is completely overwhelmed and understaffed. even if you do get through to someone they probably won't be able to help much

•That's really discouraging. I just need to get the application started so I can at least get in the system.

•Don't let that scare you off. Some people do get through the process smoothly, it's just that the horror stories are what you hear about most.

The online application isn't that bad once you get used to it. Make sure you have all your employer information ready - company names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. Also have your Social Security card and ID handy. The system will ask for all of that stuff.

•Thank you, that's actually helpful. I'll gather all that information before I try again.

•Also make sure your browser isn't blocking cookies or pop-ups. The ESD website is really finicky about that stuff.

I tried going to the ESD office in Tukwila last year and they basically told me to go home and apply online. The security guard said they only do appointments for very specific issues and unemployment applications aren't one of them. Total waste of time.

•Ugh, that's exactly what I was afraid of. Why do they even have offices if they won't help people?

•The offices are mainly for employers now, not individual claimants. It's really frustrating.

If you're really struggling with the online system, you could ask a friend or family member who's good with computers to help you. That's what my mom did when she lost her job. Sometimes having someone else there to help navigate the website makes it easier.

•That's a good suggestion. My daughter is pretty tech-savvy, maybe she could help me get through it.

•Just make sure whoever helps you doesn't save any of your personal information on their computer. Keep that stuff secure.

You might also want to try applying during off-peak hours like early morning or late evening. The website tends to be less buggy when fewer people are using it. I applied at like 6 AM and it went pretty smoothly.

•I'll try that! I was trying during lunch breaks which is probably when everyone else is trying too.

•Yeah the website crashes constantly during business hours. Early morning is definitely better.

Whatever you do, don't wait too long to apply. You need to file within a certain timeframe after losing your job or you might not be eligible for benefits. I think it's like 2-3 weeks max but don't quote me on that.

•Oh no, I didn't know there was a deadline! I lost my job last week so I should still be okay but I need to get on this ASAP.

•You should be fine if you just lost your job last week. The sooner you apply the better though.

I used Claimyr when I couldn't get through to ESD about my adjudication issue. It's not free but it's worth it if you really need to talk to someone and can't get through the regular way. Saved me probably 20 hours of calling and redialing.

•How much does it cost? If it's reasonable I might try it just to get some guidance on the application process.

•I don't remember the exact amount but it wasn't too expensive considering how much time it saved me. Check their website for current pricing.

honestly just bite the bullet and do it online. yes the website sucks but once you get through it you're done. sitting around waiting for in-person help that doesn't exist isn't going to pay your bills

Make sure you print out or screenshot everything after you submit your application. The ESD system has been known to lose applications or not save them properly. Having proof that you submitted it on a certain date could be important later.

•Good tip! I'll definitely save everything. This whole process seems so complicated for something that should be straightforward.

•It really is unnecessarily complicated. The old system was way better but they 'upgraded' it a few years ago and made it worse.

Libraries sometimes have computer classes or can provide one-on-one help with online applications. Might be worth calling your local library to see if they offer that kind of assistance. Some of them specifically help with government websites.

•That's a really good idea! I never thought about the library. They probably have better computers than I do at home too.

•Yeah the librarians are usually super helpful with that stuff. And it's free which is nice.

I know someone mentioned Claimyr already but I wanted to add that I used them too when my weekly claims weren't going through properly. The ESD phone system is just broken and this was the only way I could actually get help. The video demo on their site explains it pretty well.

•It's definitely worth looking into if you're stuck. Better than being on hold for hours or never getting through at all.

Just wanted to say good luck with your application! The unemployment system in Washington is frustrating but don't give up. Lots of us have been through this process and eventually got our benefits sorted out. It's just a matter of persistence.

One more thing - when you do apply online, make sure you answer all the questions completely and accurately. Don't leave anything blank even if it seems optional. The system is picky and incomplete applications get rejected or delayed.

•I'll make sure to fill everything out completely. Thanks for all the advice everyone, this has been really helpful!

•You've got this! The hardest part is just getting started. Once you submit the application the rest of the process is more straightforward.
